News emerged this morning that New Zealand head Sir Gordon Tietjens has confirmed his New Zealand Sevens squad for the 2015-2016 season in the run up to the Summer Olympics, being held in Rio de Janeiro. It will be the first time that a rugby ball has graced an Olympic event since 1924. Things were a little different back then. It was rugby union as opposed to rugby sevens and only three teams entered, France, the USA and Romania. France decimated the USA in the final 59-3. We hope that the games at Rio will be a little more competitive but after looking at the squad that New Zealand have announced it might be a cause of déjà vu. Traditionally players that make up their national 7s squad are young or fringe players who haven’t quite broken into the 15 man game but are still earning a living doing what they love. New Zealand aren’t taking any chances and have named a squad chock-full of Super XV and International experience. Let’s have a look at a potential starting 7.
