A jay at the sales (and the national horse racing museum)

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I spent the day in Newmarket, wearing my finest country attire. First to the sales at Tattersalls, then later on visited the National Horse Racing Museum. 600823_10100756945582007_207142350_n.jpg Lot 43 sold for 1,000, I believe. 42 sold for 75,000! 529846_10100756946120927_495566237_n.jpg An excited colt (one for the ladies!) 64883_10100756946390387_1850211943_n.jpg Where the bidding takes place. Notice the weaved basket near the centre of the pic; that's where the horse dung goes. Classy! I was tempted to make an opening bid, but would have shat myself if no one else went higher! 539808_10100756945227717_143263998_n.jpg Onto the museum, which houses loads of artifacts and pictures. This photo shows some of Prince Monolulu's robes, who was a flamboyant tipster in the early 1900's. He was said to have made £8,000 by picking out the winner of the 1920 derby! 535877_10100756945023127_1288119523_n.jpg In a section of the museum, there was an interactive part where there was a horse simulator and this man. John. He's an ex jockey and I can't for the life of me remember his surname! He rode in the 1984 Grand National. His ride fell on top of him and he was in a coma for 6wks. His dad was a trainer in the 1950's who was awarded an MBE - can't remember his name either! If anyone can help me I'd be really appreciative. Runners and riders in the '84 national would do it. Can't find the info anywhere! I'd definitely recommend both the sales and museum (£6.50 entrance, although you can see the Frankel exhibition for free) to anyone interested in the sport :ok
