furlong86
Hi, can someone tell me how to find out the class of a horse? like how do you know a horse has dropped a class etc... thanks
torn up slip
Re: Horse Class It will be in the form mate. For instance. Wolverhampton 7st C5Hc. 7 Is the distance, st is the going (in this case standard) C5 means class 5 and Hc indicates a handicapp race. Obviously you deduce from that if a horse is being raised or lowered in class. Thats what you will largely find in the form figures as the vast majority of racing is of the handicapp type. For the better horses you will find G3 (group 3) and Lst (Listed) in the abreviations.
fintron
Re: Horse Class Just to add to what torn up slip has already said, all horses have an official rating which is determined by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). This 'OR' determines the grade of race they can enter as all handicaps have a weight band such as 0-85. This means you need to be rated between 0 and 85 to be eligible. Rough bandings for the grades are as follows; Class 6: 0-60 or 0-65 Class 5: 0-70 or 0-75 Class 4: 0-80 or 0-85 Class 3: 0-90 or 0-95 Class 2: 0-100 or 0-105. There are also some class 7 handicaps for the absolute donkeys that don't deserve to be racing while, at the top, some heritage handicaps are open to higher rated horses. those rated 100+ genereally compete in Listed, Group 1, 2 or 3 races, commonly termed 'Pattern' races. So to get an idea of how good a horse is look at its official rating and see how it fits into the above bandings. Anything rated less than 80 isn't much to write home about on the flat. Over jumps the bandings are all different as all horses have higher ratings. An average jumps handicapper would be rated 30-40 lb higher than an average flat animal. torn up slip
Re: Horse Class What about my reply you gypsy? Are you not going to thank me as well you ungrateful swine. As Fintron explained, the jumps horses are rated higher than the flat so horses running in a class 4 jumps race are going to be rated in excess of 100. The listings he gave are for flat ratings. DLL
Re: Horse Class That's because it's a national hunt race. The ratings system is different for horses over the jumps, if you look in that race for instance at Saddler's Star, he was rated 69 on his last flat run but has a rating of 110 when running in chases. Horses also have different ratings for chases and hurdles races too as they may be able to run to a higher mark over one or the other.
