  3. Re: Tour de France 2005 From Racing Post: T-MOBILE have thrown down the gauntlet to Lance Armstrong by spending millions assembling the best ever team seen at the Tour de France in a desperate bid to end Armstrong's era of dominance. The phone company are believed to have spent more than £5 million bringing together three of Armstrong's main rivals - Jan Ullrich, Alexandre Vinokourov and Andreas Kloden - plus other outstanding riders such as Giuseppe Guerini, Oscar Sevilla and Daniele Nardello in one crack team. Last year the combined might of Ullrich and Kloden barely got Armstrong out of first gear, but with Vinokourov added to the mix and Armstrong not in the same formthis year, T-Mobile will have high hopes of overall glory. Although with Ullrich - surely a less likely winner, despite the current odds, than the brilliant Vinokourov, who was third in 2003 when he last rode the Tour - elected as team leader, it will beinteresting to see how the team dynamics work. Armstrong remains an odds-on favourite to bow out of cycling with a seventh successive win but must overcome his worst ever preparation if he is to bow out in style. Not once since Armstrong began his miraculous winning streak in 1999 has the legendary American come into the race without a win under his belt all year. However, since returning to the saddle later than usual in March, he has fallen short of his general high standards. He even withdrew from the prestigious Paris-Nice race after suffering badly in the early stages, and was only fourth overall in his final warm-up, the Dauphine Libere, during which he was comfortably beaten by Santiago Botero in the time-trial. After that defeat Armstrong said: "I'm not overwhelmingly pleased but not disappointed. It's a stepping stone to the Tour and I'm still on track." Even without Tyler Hamilton, currently serving a two-year drugs ban, there are plenty of contenders to take Armstrong's crown. The T-Mobile boys will obviously push him hard; Ivan Basso, third last year, has got stronger every year in the Tour; mountains specialist Iban Mayo and Colombian all-rounder Botero could go well at juicier odds; and Armstrong's former domestiques Floyd Landis and Roberto Heras have finally been given their chance to shine. A dark horse could well be Bobby Julich, a revelation when third in 1998 but subsequently out of form until storming back with a bronze medal in the Olympics and a victory in the Paris-Nice race. And it is good to see Joseba Beloki, who would probably have beaten Armstrong in 2003 but for his shocking crash on the Col de la Rochette, back in the race in Heras's Liberty team.

  4. Re: Tour de France 2005 A dark horse in this year's tour could be Floyd Landis who was in Armstrong's team last year as his pacemaker in the mountains, he wasn't allowed to show his true ability becuase his job was to make Armstrong when a 6th Tour. Landis has now moved teams to Team Phonak and could well be the surprise package in the Tour as he showed last year that he has the climbing and the time-trialing ability to match (if not beat) the best. Good each-way price at 66/1.

  5. Re: Tour de France 2005 I reckon Iban Basso is the best climber, but isn't as good Time Trailing which cost him 2nd place last year and seems to be improving with every tour. If he has built up his strength in the time trailing department he must have a big chance and plus the fact he will return this year as an even stronger and better climber which means I think he is capable of breaking away from the champ in the mountains and I think he is the only person in this years tour which can. He can get vital seconds in the Mountain stages from Armstrong and 7/1 is a good price.

  6. Re: Who to follow? :welcome Steve to the forum. Ralphie has a very good system, almost 1000 Points in Profit, Manckevin made over 700 Points in profit last week in his 'Fun Placepots' Topic. Tankyman is in excellent form tipping lots of winners and also there is quite a few more of us who regulary post in this ATR section who find winners and make a nice profit. I'm not sure who is the best but the above three I mentioned have a very good profit if you follow their selections.

  7. Uttoxeter: 3.20: Magic Sky You've always got to respect French Imports bought by Nicholls and this horse was beaten in Feburary by 5 lengths in a Chase and the winner of that race previously was only two lengths behind the very classy Ambobo in November who was antepost favourite for the Sunallaiance Hurdle at Cheltenham, and as he is running on todays ground it suggests Magic Sky is expected to improve a good deal better than the very soft ground he was encountered. This horse ran in a quite decent contest last time out at Auteuil, was cantering 2 out but was pulled up lame just after that, the handicapper has taken no chances with him but should go close. 4.25 Merry Path Had three years off from the professional circuit (ran in Points last season) but last time out over the Course this May he beat a very progressive horse comfortably by three lenghts called Gallik Dawn who previously won a decent chase at Stratford by 10 lengths from useful stayer Bright Approach. Merry Dawn shaped as though the extra distance will come in his favour in that outing, and with a light weight at the foot of the handicap and open to more improvement even though 11 years old, could run a big race around 12-1. Curragh: 2.05: Ringmoor Down This is my favourite sprinter and firstly put a line though all her 6f races as imo she is not so effective over the extra furlong. This is a drop in grade as she has been contesting in the highest company, third in 5f Group 3 in April behind Avonbridge, won a Group 3 at Curragh & Goodwood last year and her last run in this class and todays trip was April last year when she won.

  8. In this thread I will post my Jumping Tips: Newton Abbott: Rebelle (7.10) - WIN Modest staying handicapper on the flat in 2002, had a massive 20 month layoff before a attempt at hurdling in similar company last time 17 days ago where he was 2nd (front two pulled well clear of 3rd Tommo who is 6/1 today) and as that was only his second start over hurdles (first one back in Dec 03) he is open to further improvement and should improve greatly upon his last run as he will strip fitter on this occasion and is taken to go one better here. McCoy is on board also. Fontanesi (7.40) - WIN Very decent handicapper as shown when he won the Grade 3 County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March. He was also 3rd of 17 in a very compeitive Class B Hurdle at Sandown in April and was running very well when not asked a question when he fell 4 out in the Grade 3 Swinton hurdle last time out, this is a significant drop in class albeit Novice Chasing but he is definitley the class act in the field. Covent Girl (8.15)- EACH-WAY As far as I'm concerned we have two seperate races in this weak Novice Hurdle. Buena Vista and Hillcrest will be 1st and 2nd barring accidents, but however for 3rd place there must be some value as its 16/1 bar the front two. At around 20-1 Covent Girl warrents an each-way bet as her form on her two runs over hurdles is better than anything bar the first two and she should easily finish clear of the rest to pick up that 3rd spot.

  9. Qadar (7.50 Ripon) On his first start last season he was beaten a short head by Henrik who went on to finish half a length behind Dubawi in a Group 3 race at Newmarket and was also 3rd to Motivator in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy in October. On Qadar's second start he was beaten only a length behind Dubawi (Dubawi then went on to win two Group 1s) and then won a Maiden quite easily at Lingfield in October. That form gives him a major chance here and is best priced at 9/2 with SkyBet.

  10. Selection 1: Shades Of Beige (4.40 Pontefract) FP 4/6 Was third of 9 in a stronger Maiden on her debut last week, ran green and will improve alot from that run. Massive Chance. Selection 2; Sonny Santino (3.30 Warwick) FP 11/8 Was third behind Marchus Andronicus(5th in Group 2 at York on Tuesday) in a strong looking Maiden at York in May and ran very well in defeat when finding Red Clubs (winner of Group 2 on Tuesday) one too good at Newmarket last time, he faces none of that calibre today. Selection 3: Pace Shot (4.30 Warwick) FP Evs Improved upon his debut run when 2nd of 14 in a much stronger Maiden last time out, that form sets the standard here and will be very hard to beat in this much easier race. Selection 4: Miami Explorer (2.20 Hexham) FP 4/6 Progressive performaner on the upgrade as he has won his last two starts over Hurdles (from a 9 month break) in easy fashion without being really challenged, faces the same sort of company today and this is in ideal opputunity to make the Hatrick! Selection 5: Starbuck (3.50 Hexham) FP 8-1 We need at least one good priced horse and here it is! In good form, has recently won two Points and came up against a useful sort when runner up at Kelso earlier this year, this is a weaker race and clearly capable of winning here. If all 5 horses win and you do it to Only a 10p stake, you win £71.90 judged on those prices. Surely worth a go crossfingers.gif

  11. Balmont - 3.45 York 3rd in last years July Cup after 9 months off and was lame in the morning, disappointed after but over longer trips. Ran on well to finish very close third in Temple Stakes last month over 5f. Todays trip more in favour, has won over Course & Distance before, big chance. :hope

  12. Re: 8.05 Newmarket Folio poor draw last time at Goodwood, not as effective on the all-weather but on his comeback run over Course and Distance last year in August after nearly a year off he finished 6th of 20 in a Class 2 Race, today is a drop in class from that effort and is nicely weighted on his old form. An Each-Way bet is recommended :hope

  13. Re: Royal Ascot At York - Day 2, 3.05

4.20 Not easy to assess the draw, but I don't really think that there is enough pace on the high side for the winner to come from there. Of those drawn low New Seeker is the only one I like the look of. Back to a mark of 100 which he was on for 2nd place in the Lincoln.
Pace/Draw? You mentioned faster pace with New Seeker on low side. Dave, There's no draw bias over this trip therefore the draw doesn't really matter but yes I expect New Seeker to make the running.
  14. 2.30: CAMACHO should win this enroute to contesting Group 1 race. Very impressive on his seasonal debut, clocked a very decent time and beat some useful animals in a Listed Race without being asked a serious question, I think he is undoubtably the best 6-7f 3yo in Britain. He'll be too much for the others to handle here, in other words, he is a class above these. 3.05: I'll be surprrised if SOVIET SONG loses here, she is a cut above everything else. On a line through Attraction, she should beat Sundrop easily here as she beat Attraction fairly comfortably on both outings they met last season wheras Sundrop was beaten by Attraction and to me Sundrop shapes as if she wants further and I think she'll be done for speed. Soviet Song is one of our best milers having won the Group 1 Sussex Stakes last year and should take this enroute to contesting top Group 1 races. 4.20: EDEN ROCK is surely a major blot in the handicap, he has Group class written all over him, he won doing handstands last time albeit by only a neck margin but under an extremely cheeky ride where he was value for a considerable more amount. That was after an absence of 609 days so he should improve a great deal more from that effort. He is a Group horse running in a handicap off a low weight and should win.

  15. Re: Royal Ascot At York - Day 1 Dave, this years 2000 Guiness was a stinker, the form of the race looks dreadful imo, two 100-1 shots were placed, both won't even get close to winning a Group 1 again which includes the 3rd in that race Kandidate, he'll simply get outclassed in this race and Dubawi and Oratorio should reverse form and beat him doing handstands, which is why I call the 2000 Guiness a stinker, most of the fancied horses underperformed and Kandidate was hugely flattered by finishing so close.

  16. Re: Tennis : Nottingham Open/Ordina Open

J Marray to beat A Mackin in straight sets (2.4 on Betfair) Not seen Marray play since last years Grass Court Season but at last years Queen's he had a close match against Hewitt where he had a few set points in the first set but blew his chance away and lost in straight sets. I thought on that performance he was a young brit to follow and he played quite well at Wimbledon where he lost to Karol Beck in five sets and Beck beat Henman two weeks before that at Queens. Today I think Murray will have too much class for Mackin and should win in straight sets.
First tennis tip on this forum and its a Winner! Marray won in straight sets 6-2 6-3 banana.gif
