  1. Re: New Year gambles landed I saw the gambles happening too and tagged on later on when the prices were skinny by comparison. I checked the RP and both horses had the top speed figures in their respective races. I may be wrong, or have misinterpreted their figures in my haste to convince myself to tag on to the coattails of ensuing gambles, but I find it strange that the RP can write an article above. The way the RP operates, I'd have thought they'd be making a big play on how their figues worked....

  2. Re: Jump racing Sun 2nd Jan 2011 I'm going to mark down my thoughts on tomorrow's cards just now and I'll spend more time on it in the morning if the meeting goes ahead: 1220 Novice Hurdle: TANZANITE BAY e/w. Won a nice bumper last year beating subsequent winner Line Freedom of Nicky Henderson. This is the pick of the form in what looks a nice race to kick things off. The Irish raider from JJ Lambe, Kingsmoss, Sunarri and Storm Brig all have chances, and never write off McCain/Macguire (Lively Barron) 1250 Lady Bluesky e/w Has been campaigned mainly on the flat in the past year, getting a hang of things, before being turned over on hurdles debut at Kelso in November. Didn't look that bad that day all things considered and I think can make amends. Finished 4th in a good listed bumper at Aintree in April 2009 finishing ahead of Dikler's Oscar that day (see above post from Bowlesy) 155. The two Lucinda Russell horses interest me, Safari Adventures would be my e/w pick based on form, but wouldn't it be a poignant result if Raysrock could pay tribute on first run for Miss Russell since being transferred from the tragic, late Peter Monteith's stable. 300 Nodform William e/w. Would be great to see Graham Lee win again on this on one, my fav jockey isn't having much luck with his own stable again this year (WTF is going on with Ferdy, he's been hopeless for years) but he does well for Karen McLintock and takes this ride rather than 4 of Jim Goldie's. On form Nodform is my pick of these, he's also had a training run at Southwell earlier in the week, so should be right.

  3. Re: Jumps Racing 1st Jan 2011

I've had a quick look and have 3 for tomorrow, putting them on tonight as I don't expect to be around tomorrow. I've been expecting better from Knockara Beau (2.35pm) for a while, but have seen signs of him coming good lately, especially LTO at course against the brilliant Midnight Chase, and feel he's about right, as Bowlesy says above, conditions seem right too, I'm not convinced he's a 3m+ one at present. Can't help but go back to Reve De Sivola (2.00) again too, especially after the last one, been following all of Nick Williams for a while now and still anticipating continued improvement from Reve. Last one for me on Saturday is Salden Licht at Exeter (2.15), I've been following Salden since the November Handicap a couple of years ago, still rate him and expecting improvement over timber. Alan King's have certainly improved generally this year, though I have trouble figuring out where and when. Lastly, though I won't be backing him, wouldn't Blazing Bailey be absolutely chucked in off 133 in the 130pm race? He was winning championship races off of 30lbs higher just a few years ago and at 9y/o tomorrow, he's hardly past it if they've figured out the key to him. Chartreux is interesting in the 3.10 at Cheltenham. The pick of all the Pipe horses by Scu, he showed promise last year before a bit of a disappointment at the Festival. If fulfilling his earlier promise.... Good luck everyone, hope you all have a very happy and prosperous new year!
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry today, but when I saw Blazing Bailey romp home, I thought it was my turn to win the scoop6 today, where could it all go wrong? Well, Reve kind burst that bubble with a below par run, I'm wondering if he'll be the next one that needs a longer break between races - or have I over estimated him? Salden Licht looked sweet, but I'm kicking myself for bumming up Knockara Beau. More jumping errors today seem to keep him down, I give up on that one, seems to be a recurring theme. I let myself be swayed a bit by an article earlier in the week, even worse that I really like Tartak and particularly Paddy Brennan. Chartreux looked good turning for home, but I did not think Ashkazar still had it.

  5. Re: Jumps Racing - 30th December

I had a look back through my Neil Mulholland stable tour on this one. He used the word "rapid" to describe Acontium, said he's had problems with the way he tried to hurdle his fences, so last time got Mark Quinlan to basically school him by deliberately riding him close in to the fences to force him to improve his jumping technique which he thinks has worked out nicely and expects an improvement for that run. Good luck :hope
Well done Lars, very unlucky in the end there, I can see where Mulholland finds the word "rapid" accurate, pity Dougie couldn't get it going just a little sooner there. Jumping was sound enough looking, definitely one to follow.:clap
  6. Re: Jumps Racing - 30th December

16:00 Taunton Aconitum has only had one hurdles run to date, and that was a fairly average run to tell the truth. However, he should be able to run better now back in more reasonable company and he can run a big race today. Has never won under any code, which from 13 runs is quite worrying, however he has gone close on at least three occasions, and now he’s down to a mark of only 96, he could well be a big player off it. Neil Mullholland’s 5yo gelding has placed on three occasions, two of which have been over hurdles. Those placed efforts came off marks of 95 and 100, and both were over this trip and on similar ground conditions. He was quite unfortunate to get beat on both of those occasions, and I don’t think it’s an attitude problem that has kept him from winning. He’s mostly jumped well over hurdles, indicating that the switch to chasing should not have been a problem. His chase debut came last month and he finished 22lengths behind the winner. He was fairly strong in the market as he was priced at 11/2. However, there are a few excuses to the poor run. It was his first outing for 8 months, so his fitness could well have been an issue. He was also without a visor for the first time in a while. All his best runs have come when this headgear has been used. It wasn’t a bad run in terms of jumping, it was a pretty clear round but he just faded pretty tamely. I think this may have just been the fact he needed the run. With the visor back on, and the reintroduction of Dougie Costello to the saddle, whom gets on pretty well with this mount and may also be seen as a signal of intent, I feel he can put in a much improved performance. He gets ground he should enjoy, especially if it becomes more testing. The yard only bring this one horse here, and they could well have avoided most of the snow, as Devon got off pretty lightly in the early stages of the freeze. He’s down to a mark of 96; 4lbs lower than when last seen and looks quite well handicapped on his hurdle form. This is as big a price as he’s been able to back at in quite a while, and I’m expecting a decent run. Aconitum; 1pt EW @ 16/1 Betfred (bog)

  7. Re: Jumps Racing - 30th December I'm a big fan of niel mulholland, good luck with that one lars. There are a lot of short price ones again in ireland today, not much i fancy at decent prices so i'll maybe lump a few small stake accas at them, but expecting a few of gordon elliots at various courses including the excellent toner d'oudaries. Noel meade has dylan ross taking in a seemingly soft hurdle race on his hurdling debut at down royal.

  8. Re: Jump Racing - 29th December You mean Dessie Scahill? I have eyes, can see what is happening myself, don't really need to listen to any commentator, but I like Dessie's voice, got a very old school sound to it, I've heard people moan about him, but don't get it, I like him rather than the over-annunciated English ones, especially the plank who was overdoing the French accent earlier.

  9. Re: Jump Racing - 29th December Just a few thoughts today after yesterday's frustratingly bad staking from me: Firstly, why can't RUK station a few of their talking heads around the inside of the course and have an "open mic" type commentary? I had an antepost last year on Al Ferof e/w for last year's CB at Chelt at 40s IIRC that I posted on here a few times, so am not deserting him today. Big Zeb is, in my opinion, the best 2m chaser on these islands if he gets a good break and good to soft ground. And of course, Hurricane Fly can literally be anything it likes. The earlier turning over of Punchestowns (McCoy outbattled in a finish) and Zaidpour (poor ride) hopefully clears the way for a few favs to sail in now. Having an acca on the above. Lastly, I've had a novelty bet on AIRDRIE in the bumper at Newbury, this is a novelty bet for me, as it's named after my hometown and football team. The sire/damsire are the same as Blackjackketchum and Oscar Looby, so hopefully he has that kind of ability. got a tenner e/w at 50s this morning for fun.:hope The weekender's Lambourne watcher said to look out for it last week, so hopefully not too bad.

  10. Re: Jumps Racing - 28th December I'm on THEGREATJOHNBROWNE too, I put it up on a Cheltenham thread on here a few weeks ago for the RSA, so by natural selection, he must win this to justify my confidence. I really liked the look of this one over 2m6f a month ago and he has conditions to suit. Being a huge fan of Gordon Elliot I'm nervous of Chigago Grey in this race too but I'm going to have to go with my instincts here. I've gone for Pandorama e/w in the Lexus, he should be suited by the conditions too, as will Joncol, my concern for Pandorama is that he has had a withdrawal first time out due to a nose bleed, which they said could have been simply a bang on the nose in his box, then a dreadful run in the Hennessy which was out of character, he allegedly really clumped a fence early on, then was nearly brought down which took any wind out of his sails. I think Pandorama, on form, has possibly the bigger ceiling so on that basis I'll forgive him the one bad run and trust that he's ready to prove his undoubted ability today. for me; 2pt single on THEGREATJOHNBROWNE 1pt e/w double, THEGREATJOHNBROWNE and PANDORAMA
