Re: Grand National Thread
I re-read what i'd posted and had hastily edited out some text that i think would have put it in context. I was trying to say that the kind of images are fuel to the strong anti racing (particularly jumps) lobby. The crude handling of the images of dead horses by the Aintree and beeb broadcast will undoubtedly fan the flames IMO and I think that it could have been much, much better handled at the time. We as punters know the risks involved and have reconciled our collective conscience but there are a lot of people who are venomously against the sport.so publishing a photo of a horse falling to its death is the right thing to do?? Really i am totally lost here as to the recent posts -
Re: Grand National Thread http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1375210/Grand-National-2011-Ballabriggs-wins-day-drama-Aintree.html Some pretty horrid images Markmy, i may be going off tangent a bit, but I'm concerned that jumps racing could come under threat here like it has in other countries (and where other unpopular sports with the animal rights groups have here). Aintree's failure to provide screens for one of the horses was bad enough, I feel the beeb could have been a bit more reactive too.

Re: PETER TOOLE They had a set of curtains around him and missed the fence on the second lap. Unfortunately you can see the ambulancemen working on him.

Re: Grand National Thread Shurely they could focus on the back markers whilst the leaders are going by the stricken horse then cut back to the leaders when they're clear. Not exactly rocket science. The industry need to tread more carefully in view of what has happened elsewhere. I watched with my wife and kids and had to look at a couple of rather sad faces when I explained they were probably dead. I never thought fox hunting could seriously be outlawed.

Re: Grand National Thread I put up a link a few months ago to what had happened in Australia - JUMP RACING WAS BANNED. Anyone who underestimates the anti-racing eejits needs to stop and think. It happened to fox hunting, it can easily happen again. And I for one don't want it. The producers should have been a lot cuter. That was horrific looking today.

The kid is in critical condition tonight after a bad fall earlier on the card at Aintree.

Re: Grand National Thread
Great ride from Jason McGuire there, he made Oscar Time's jockey look like an amateur. I had a smaller bet on Ballabriggs than the other 2, for the life of me, in hindsight, I have no idea why :) :notworthyHe hopes to take 3 of his rides tomorrow (not attempting Sagalyrique for some reason, Paddy Brennan takes the job), and obviously Saturday thereafter. Wayne, much as I love Ballabriggs, he has to carry the torch for Presenting, who hasn't sired a classy 4m+ chaser. He's one of my 3 (Main bets were Backstage and Big Fella) but i'm least confident about him. -

Re: netbook help One of my mates owns a laptops shop and i asked him about them a while ago and he left me in no doubt that i'd be wasting money as they're too choppy. I'm no expert but for what you're looking for would probably work best is a newer version of iphone or top of range android.

Re: Grand National Thread i had a pretty large bet on Backstage last year mate, the National was the plan last year too, they protected his mark then too running over hurdles and p2ps,. it's all about luck in running which he didn't have last year. I'll be having a bet on Backstage too (and Big Fella), he obviously took to it and should be there abouts if getting the rub of the green. There is a fairytale cameo angle for the Beeb to sploogefest on for Paul Carberry too, he was on top of King John's Castle last year when the grey refused. ;)

Re: The Grand National Fences Yes they are, there are only a few other races over them, notably the Becher Chase. The most similar other fences are used sparingly in cross country races usually at Cheltenham and Punchestown where they are known as "national" fences.

Re: Derek Thompson i'm frothing at the thought joe :)

Re: Flat Racing 3rd April 5.25 Doncaster I got a call from a well informed mate advising me to get on LAW OF THE RANGE for Marco Botti and Adam Kirby. Has dropped a good few points already today, only 9/4 now, but was more than double that this morning. Beat Rare Tern and Sooraah in a game display lto at Sandown in September, has the ability to win again off only 6lbs higher. Trainer and jockey have formed a strong alliance and both in good form.

Re: Derek Thompson
The horse wouldn't be the only one frothing at the mouth if she was patting my nose :)They should replace him on the Morning Line with Hayley O'Conner from Ladcrooks Ireland. -

Re: Derek Thompson
Hell hath no fury like a timeform groupie scorned :) I think most think thompson is greedy by the tipping lines feeding shamelessly off of his tv persona. He's a corporate whore working for the industry to fleece the idiot in the armchair. Of course he's probably a nice guy in real life, he's someone's dad, husband, grandad, uncle, neighbour... but as long as he feeds off the image he's fair game.OMG. Judging people by the way someone blinks. Thinking you can judge that someone is greedy by what someone does on TV. As Bowles implies, if you met some of these presenters, you might have a different opinion. I don't particularly like Thommo's way of doing things, but he's popular with the once a year punters and women. As for Jimbo's arrogance, of course he's arrogant, he's a successful punter. All successful punters are arrogant when talking about racing.;) -
Re: Derek Thompson Thommo is a clown, his commentaries are cringeworthy, his jolly japes are not spiffing, but he is a hard working old sod who'd be an asset to the sport if only for his extreme greed on the tipping front, that is what gets me. Too many uninitiated get sucked in without realising he has no idea, and the manipulation of figures in his ads are leading people up a blind alley. Don't start me on that weasel naughton.

Re: Paddy Brennan quits the Twister I think it's fair to say that Paddy is key to the relationship between Twister and the Commander's owners, hence the "open marriage". There isn't many big stable jockey jobs open though, PB could have picked up a lot of spare work from Nicholls this year the way things worked out, but looks like Daryl Jacob and Fehily will benefit from that going forward. No openings at Nicholls, Henderson, Pipe, McCain, etc., so not great for PB

Re: Thurs 4.40 : Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Steeple Chase I don't know, i heard an email of his read out on one of the racing channels, he obviously wants to communicate. It would be good to have tapk's insights over here, if nothing else, the man knows his horses.
