  1. Re: King George VI Chase - Boxing Day I think the temperatures are meant to rise a fair bit from Sunday onwards, looking at the current forecast on the Met Office site, it would seem that Tuesday (+6 to +7 predicted) would have been a better bet. I really hope it's on, but remain a bit pessimistic. I've just sent off for my free RUK tickets for the meetings at Musselburgh (6th Feb - cheltenham trials) and Ayr (12th Feb), I'm not all that confident it will thaw out by then (it's -11 here at the moment).

  2. Re: how good is your racing knowledge? Racing+ is both a monthly magazine and a weekend paper that provides an alternative to the post. I used to get the paper a few years ago, they had Martin Dwyer (when retained by Shake Handsman) and then Timmy Murphy as weekend columnist and I found those insights very helpful, but we don't get them anymore. They have columns by Ashley Iverson, The Fox (their regular pundit), Richard Hoiles, Sir Bob Cooper, etc. The layout is a bit different in that they have the races for the whole weekend, and they're in chronological order rather than by meeting. There isn't as much information as the post, but then again, less is more as the post seems to be aiming to confuse as much as assist. The strike rate of the headline pundits is just as dubious as the post. Last time I checked, Iverson had tipped Poquelin at 16s a couple of weeks ago but otherwise, the number of losers from the combined bigwigs far outweighed the one successful tip. That said, they have a promising young punding doing the spotlights on a number of races, and in the last issue I purchased, the young spotlight contributer "WF" had picked a fair few winners in the Wolverhampton meeting that day, far outperforming his peers. I hope they don't nobble him for being too good though, the last star turn, Paul Ferguson, didn't last long :)

  3. Re: how good is your racing knowledge? Fintron, I think I can smell a new competition coming on... "PL v. Racing+ challenge". Every Friday evening, you tell us which races that "WF" will be doing his spotlights for, and the PL illuminati get to go head to head with the paper's top tipster! All entries must be in before the paper hits the news stands on the Saturday morning! ??

  4. Re: Class 6 or Group 1? These past couple of long winter freezes, it's natural to focus on the big races, but i'm with you russ that it's important to study any race long and hard. The thing with the king george and championship races is that we know the general targets all year long so natural to speculate much earlier.

  5. Re: COME ON ATR - VOTE AP Yeah, AP wins, Graham Lee smiles.... Paddy Brennan wins the GC but doesn't get a mention, but he does get to sit next to my own racing hero, Ray Cochrane. Well done AP, more of a lifetime achievement award than a reflection of this year, but who cares. :clap

  6. Looking through the entries, I can't really see anything to seriously trouble King Kauto. I'm going to rely on Planet of Sound either e/w at 16s, or 7/1 in the market w/o Kauto. He's relatively unexposed over the trip having run 3rd in the 2009 Arkle behind forpady, he won the Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown in April this year stepped up to 3m+ for the first time. He finished ahead of What a Friend on his reappearance behind the Commander in the Betfair Chase and was staying on again after the last, I'm hoping that run puts him bang on for this. I'm not 100% convinced by any of the others. Long Run is still very inexperienced and still making a lot of mistakes but could get it right if lessons learned. Was Sizing Europe flattered at Down Royal? What's everyone else thinking?

  7. Re: The Jockey Thread I've been a lot happier recently Wayne with Phillip Makin taking Callan's old job at Hambleton, though I kind of f'kd up a bit today... I had a tenner e/w treble on Everyman, Nightjar and Jim Bowie as my only bet today. You know what I'm like, I like small stakes for high rewards, I still got a decent enough return but hit the crossbar again. Good to see Makin in that job now, was a bit frustrating this year with their revolving door policy, so looking forward to seeing some consistency for us to follow again.

  9. Re: Jumps Racing - Sunday good luck with Teeming Rain lads. I don't know how many times I've tried second guessing this one, finally got another win out of it last spring, but vowed to stop backing it after "cleaning the slate". I don't want to be a merchant of doom here, but his first run after a break is usually an abysmal effort, last four after a break are PFPP over the last 3 years. He usually needs a few races. That said, you know who he's owned and trained by, so anything is possible.
