  1. Re: Golf: US Open (June 16-19) As usual with a US Open this is going to be a tough, tough week, Alex Noren has described Congressional as ‘brutal but fair’. With the course playing over 7500 yards and greens running at around 14 on the stimpmeter it’s not going to be for the fainthearted. I’m with Martin Kaymer though, there’s any one of about 40 players with a chance this week and that makes it bloody difficult to find a winner. 1st round leader - Sergio Garcia e/w @ 60/1 Boylesports Oh Sergio, poor Sergio. What the golfing gods gave him with one hand, they took away with the other. Blessed with a ball striking ability that few can match, he’s cursed with a putting stroke that few would want. I wouldn’t trust him to keep it together for four days but he shown glimpses of his real class this year, at both the Crowne Plaza and HP Byron Nelson he opened with a 66 before falling away and I think he’s a decent price to make another fast start. Brandt Jobe e/w @ 125/1 Boylesports Jobe comes into this in a great frame of mind after closing with a 65 at the Memorial to place T2. Like Garcia I wouldn’t think he can last the distance but he could get off to a fast start on a tough course. Jobe drives the ball plenty long and is ranked 4th in total driving, he’s a good long iron player and with positive thoughts and a nice morning tee time he could come out of the blocks quickly. Outright betting KJ Choi e/w @ 33/1 Bet 365 I have to admit I thought Choi was perhaps over the hill and on the decline but he’s win at the Players will have given him a real boost and massive injection of confidence. That was one of five top 10 finishes this season and Choi has the right character for the US Open, he’s tough, unflappable and can grind it out with the best of them. KJ has also won at Congressional, winning the AT&T there back in 2007, the course has been changed since then but it’s still got good memories for him. He also has an excellent short game, ranked with the best in scrambling and sand saves he seems to have sorted out the putting problems that had hindered him for the last couple of years. He’s threatened to win a major a few times and this could well be the year he delivers. Angel Cabrera e/w @ 100/1 PaddyPower I love the fact that the only two tournaments Cabrera has won in the US have been majors. It’s pointless looking at stats with the big guy, he could well turn up and shoot 15 over par, miss the cut by a mile and stalk off in a giant huff. Equally he could have a week where he hits it out of the screws, keeps his head together and makes his third win the US his third major. Proved at Oakmont that he can win on brutally long and tough courses, at this big price I’ll take the chance that El Pato has a good week. Matt Kuchar e/w @ 25/1 Paddypower Kuchar’s has made every cut this year with eight top-10 finishes. Leads the PGA Tour in the all-around category and is 16th in fairways, 12th in greens, 31st in putting and second in bogey avoidance. He looks like a player who is ready to win his first major, he always seems pretty unflappable on the course and that could stand him in good stead this week. Gary Woodland e/w @ 100/1 Boylesports Woodland left it late to secure his spot, only getting it after making the world’s top 40 after Memorial. He’s got the potential to go well here though, super long off the tee and with good GIR stats, if he can keep it on the cut stuff a decent amount of time then he has a chance. I’m not completely sold on his short game and putting but I like his attitude, he really seems to have his head screwed on and after five top-10 finishes this season should be full of confidence. Although short on Tour experience this is his 3rd US Open so he knows what to expect.

  2. Re: Golf: PGA Tour 2011 - The Heritage Harbour Town, like most Pete Dye courses suits pure ball strikers better than bombers, there are a lot of trees and a fair bit of water so you need to put the ball in the right place off the tee. Heath Slocum, ew 125/1 @ Totesport Slocum ranks in the top 10 in driving accuracy and greens in regulation, yet he has only one top 25 this year, why? Because he seemingly putts like my mum and is ranked almost last in putting. He’s a quality ball striker though and when he gets a good week with the flat stick he cashes in, he’s won in each of the last two years and had 5 top ten finishes last season. One of those was at the Heritage when he finished T8 and he also finished 12th here in 2006 so he has some decent results here. Being a poor putter isn't necessarily a hindrance to winning here as Boo Weekley has proved by winning twice! Brian Gay, ew - 35/1 @ Bet365 Winner here in 2009 when he stormed away from the rest of the field and won by a mile. I imagine this season has been frustrating for Gay, with 8 cuts made out of 9 tournaments he has been a model of consistency and although he has two top five finishes he’s not real got in a position to win. Gay leads the tour in driving accuracy, sand saves and scrambling and ranks 29th in putting, he looks like a player on the verge of a win on a course the suits his game down to the ground.

  3. Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Graeme McDowell e/w @ 45/1 It baffles me that Rory McIlroy, who has two wins in almost four years on tour is way shorter than his good buddy McDowell. McDowell has the aura of a major champion now, never illustrated better than when he turned around a four shot deficit to beat Tiger in the Chevron back in December. This year has been steady for McDowell in the US with three top tens although I would imagine motivating himself for regular tour events is now a lot harder, it's all about the majors. Suprisingly this is only McDowell's fourth appearance at the Masters, he missed the cut last year but finished T17 the year before. His strength for me is his iron play and his course management, both key factors at Augusta and his putting is much improved. Dustin Johnson e/w @ 28/1 You would think Augusta would be made for Johnson with his length off the tee and an excellent short game, he should make mincemeat of the par 5s. His record is nothing to write home about, T30 and T38 the last two years but they always say you need to play there a few times to get used to the course. I thought Johnson came back really well at the USPGA after his meltdown at Pebble Beach, didn't get there then but perhaps third time lucky. He's been bubbling along quite nicely this year with three top 10s, including a 2nd at the WGC Cadillac a few weeks ago. One thing I like about DJ here is that he is a superb putter. Bill Haas e/w @150/1 Haas is a bit of a steady eddie, knock it down the middle and then in the middle of the green, to be honest, he's a bit dull. Dull he maybe but he gets the job done, he was T26 on debut here last year. Haas has the necessary components to do well here, good GIR stats (10th on tour) and a good short game, scrambling (ranked 9th) and putting (ranked 58th) He's also ranked well in the birdie average (28th) and eagles (9th) Ben Crane e/w @150/1 Crane is one of the shorter hitters on tour but I'm hoping he can follow in the footsteps of Mike Weir and Zach Johnson and win it for the little guys. This is Crane's fourth appearance here, made the cut for the first time last year when he finished T24. He proved last year that he can win on long courses when he won the Farmers Insurance at Torrey Pines so his length hopefully won't be an issue. Crane is 1st on the tour in GIR, 13th in putting and 4th in birdie average all of which bodes well. He missed a few weeks with a rib injury but came back at the Shell Houston Open last week and finished T24 so he should be good to go this week.

  4. Re: Golf: PGA Tour 2011 - Honda Classic DA Points - top ten finish @ 8.0 Betfair DA Points is a bit of journeyman golfer but he's now got a PGA Tour win on his cv and he should be full of confidence after winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am 3 weeks ago. You need to be accurate to do well around this course, Points is 12th on the total driving stats and 24th on GIR, indeed he's well up on the stats in all the rankings (1st on the all-round ranking) He's also got form here after finishing 9th in 2009.
