  1. Re: European Tour 2012: Sicilian Open 29th Mar - 1st Apr New course this year as the Sicilian Open moves to a seaside links course, this place was designed by Kyle Philips who also designed Kingsbarn and remodelled Hilversum in Holland, both of which are used on the Europeantour. Thomas Levet 2pts win @ 350 Betfair Ah crazy old Thomas Levet, getting to the veteran stage now but still without the sense he was born with. Breaking your leg jumping into a lake is an odd way to celebrate winning your home open but Levet isn’t onefor doing the sensible thing. The win in the French Open was Levet’s 6th European Tour win and he has a victory to his name in 3 of the last 4 years on tour. Having been injured again in the off season he has hardly played this year, just three events and he’s only really got back into the swing of things in the last two weeks. Although he missed the cut in Morrocco last week he bounced back from an opening 79 to go 10 shots better in an encouraging 2nd round.Levet has always loved the challenge of links golf and has two top 5 finishes in the Open, the course should suit Levet and he looks a big price to me and hopefully he can get involved at the business end of the tournament.

  2. Re: PGA Tour 2012: Shell Houston Open 29th Mar - 1st Apr

Would not back Phil this time as he tends to try things out before a major,i did back him last year when he won due to the fact that it was where his wife had her cancer ops and all the doctors etc were there and he gave a huge dollop to charity,so have that down as a one off good luck
I'm sure I read somewhere that he's won four times the week before the Masters, can't remember whether it was online or on twitter. Anyways best of luck to one and all.
  3. Re: PGA Tour 2012 - Arnold Palmer Invitational 22-25 March At least Ernie didn't bother with giving any false hope, as soon as he missed that 3 ft putt on the 1st it was going to be a long day. He's not putted well for a couple of years but it now looks chronic and the putting demons are deep in his brain. It's a shame as his ball striking remains excellent but if you keep hitting it close but miss the putts then it's very demoralising. Tiger was excellent this week and back to something like his best, the most interesting stat is that he leads overall driving. It makes The Masters even more fascinating, with McIlroy, Donald and Rose all in good form and add in Mickleson to the mix it should be a cracking tournament. Going to have to think long and hard about it from a betting perspective.

  4. Re: European Tour 2012: Trophee Hassan 22-25 March Raphael Jacquelin 1pt e/w @ 50/1 Bet365 (now 45/1) The Frenchman finished T5 in Andalucia at the weekend as his countryman Julien Quesne won and hopefully that will inspire him on to better things this week. Jacquelin finished 29 here last year and it could have been so much better but for a 77 in the second round as his other three rounds were in the 60's. A 3 time winner on tour the Frenchman looked in good form last week and could go well at a decent price

  5. Re: PGA Tour 2012 - Arnold Palmer Invitational 22-25 March Ernie Els 2pts win @ 50 Betfair Bit of an obvious pick but Ernie was superb at the Transitions, he struck the ball magnificently and after 70 holes looked like he was going to pick up his first win for two years. Bad putting let him down again because if he'd putted anything like he would have won comfortably. Ernie is experienced enough not to let that get to him and his supreme ball striking will keep giving him chances. From the minor glimpse I had of the Tavistock Cup it looked like Ernie was continuing to play well, this is a course that rewards experience and few can beat the Big Easy with his two previous wins here. I was expecting to be looking at about 35 for Ernie this week so delighted to get 50 and I'm sure I'll get a run for my money.

  6. Couldn't see a thread for this week, so thought I'd better start one :ok After a month’s absence the European Tour returns, with the first event of the year that is actually in Europe. With no golf for so long I think form goes out of the window and with this tournament being played at Aloha Gardens for the first time since 2008 there’s not a lot of course form to go on either. David Horsey 1pt e/w @ 100/1 Bet365 With this event falling between the WGC events and the Masters it’s not a great field with all the best European players choosing to remain in the US. Horsey is a player I tipped last time out in India and while he made the cut he never threatened to win. Since then he’s spent some time in Dubai working hard on his game. This is a course where plotting your way around is the key and hitting the ball in the right parts of the fairway and greens, this is where Horsey’s strengths lie so the course should suit him (he’s not played here before) With two wins in the last two years he’s a much better player than these odds suggest and he’s going to find his form sooner rather than later, hopefully it will be this week. Lorenzo Gagli 1pt e/w @ 90/1 Bet365 Another player I’ve already backed this year a couple of times. Five top 10 finishes in his rookie season showed his talent and like Horsey, he’s a short but accurate hitter who should suit the course. While he has no course form here he finished 2nd in Madrid last year so he has a liking for Spanish soil. He’s a very talented player and one who is on an upward curve, hopefully the break will have done him good and allowed him to find his best form Fredrik Andersson-Hed 1pt e/w @150/1 I was pretty stunned when the big Swede won the Italian Open a couple of years ago as he was a player who I always thought lacked the bottle to hold on to a lead, but the first win is always the hardest and there may be another around the corner for Fred. He’s one of the few players with any course form having finished 2nd to Lee Westwood back in 2007. As the odds would suggest he’s very much a streaky player, he’s quite capable of producing some stunning low rounds and equally likely to shoot 78. In a field as weak as this I think he’s too big a price and hopefully he’ll have one of his good weeks.

  7. Re: WGC Cadillac Championship 8th Mar- 11th Mar Tough one this, I reckon you could easily make a good case for about 20 players here, oh well, here goes.. Paddy Power are paying e/w 6 places, which is pretty generous considering the size of the field Graeme McDowell 1pt e/w @ 55/1 Paddy Power McDowell found a bit of form last week at the Honda where he finished T9, it could have been a whole lot better if it hadn't been for a first round 73. T6 here in 2009 proved that even the shorter hitters can prosper on this long course. He clearly has a liking for Florida (I think he lives there some of the time) as he T6 at the Honda the year before. The forecast breezy conditions should suit McDowell as it's what he grew up in and he tends to play well when the going is tough. Was near the top of the putting stats last week and if that continues then he can contend. Bill Haas 1pt e/w @ 45/1 Paddy Power I still think Haas is under-rated as a golfer, winner of the Tour Championship last year he's proved he can win the big tournaments, beating Mickleson and Keegan Bradley in a playoff to win the Northern Trust a few weeks ago will only have bolstered his self belief. T6 here in 2009 and in great form so far this year he comes in well rested after skipping the Honda and should go well at the decent price.

  8. Re: PGA Tour 2012: Honda Classic 01-04 March Just two for me this week, good luck all :ok Chris Kirk 1pt e/w @ 175/1 Bet365 It’s been a slow start to the season for Chris Kirk, a winner in his rookie season in 2011 he’s a player that I like a lot. This is a tough course and hitting GIR is of great importance and Kirk ranks 15thin GIR, he’s also 10th in par 4 performance which bodes well on a course where birdies are hard to come by. He T29 here last year in his first appearance and has played well in windy conditions in Texas so should be able to handle the forecasted gusty winds. Kirk is a Georgia boy and has played a lot of golf on bermuda greens and is more used to them than most, back in 2010 a lot of his good Nationwide finishes came on bermuda greens. He’s not been in great form since T7 in Hawaii but after a couple of weeks off I’m happy to take the chance that he rediscovers his form at a nice price. Mark Wilson 1pt e/w @ 50/1 Bet365 What’s not to like, former champion here, 5 wins in 5 years on tour, already a winner in 2012 and coming off 3rd place in the matchplay. Wilson continues to be an underrated golfer who is getting better year on year, he’s become a bit of a specialist in starting the year quickly and has the win at the Humana under his belt. There’s no great secret to Wilson’s game, he’s accurate off the tee, has great approach play and is a solid putter. As Crouch said, he should be a lesser price than this and the only doubt I would have is fatigue but he generally plays a pretty heavy schedule so that shouldn’t be a problem

  9. Re: PGA Tour 2012: Northern Trust Open Interesting stuff Crouch, I think Bradley would have met the majority of the criteria as well. Will you be applying the criteria to the Mayakoba this week? I find it an interesting approach (probably too much work for someone as lazy as me!) and will watch with interest. Bill Haas has quietly and his own understated way, become a mighty fine player, he's not exciting but he has become a top player. I would think US Open and PGA Championship courses will suit his game and will bear him in mind when they come around. Always find it a bit bizarre that Ricky Fowler, who has done very little on the tour, goes off at much shorter odds than Haas pretty much every week. Perhaps if Haas also looked like he'd been dressed by a colour blind madman then his odds would shorten!

  10. Re: European Tour 2012:Avantha Masters Feb 16-19 It’s fair to say that there’s a bit of a decline in the quality of the field this week, but while the likes of Westwood and Kaymer go home to count their cash and buy something shiney and new, the tour moves on to India. While it’s not the most exciting event it’s still 300,000 euros to the winner, which is pretty good for a weeks work and a bit more than I’m going to earn.   Bernd Wiesberger - 1pt e/ew @ 66/1 - Skybet Two wins on the Challenge Tour in 2010 marked the Austrian out as a player to watch, he followed that up with a fine season on the main tour with five top-10 finishes in 2011. T29 here last year he comes into the tournament on the back of an encouraging 24th in Dubai and some decent form in South Africe in the winter. Some of the older players might find it hard to get motivated for this one but for a player like Wiesberger this is a great opportunity to get that first win   Lorenzo Gagli - 1pt e/w @ 60/1 - Bet365   I backed Gagli earlier in the year and things haven’t gone well for him in the middle east. Missed cuts in Qatar and Dubai have left plenty of room for improvement in the Italian’s game, he’s not been playing terribly but just never really got anything going. This step down in class should suit him though, being one of the straightest drivers on tour (8th in driving accuracy in 2011) will be of great help on this tree lined course and his accurate iron play (1st in GIR in 2011) will stand him in good stead on these small greens. 6 top five finishes marked him out as a player on an upward curve last season and I’ll take this price that he can rediscover some form here.   David Horsey - 1pt e/w @ 70/1 - Bet365   A winner in each of the last two years Horsey is a quality player and this is a very attractive price. He had a bit of a stinker in Dubai, missing the cut by quite some distance but he’s said that his swing is there but just not the scores at the moment. An accurate driver and excellent putter Horsey has the game to do well on this course, his putting should shine on the slopey greens in Delhi. At his best Horsey is one of the class acts in this field and I’m happy to take the chance that he’ll start to find the scores this week.   Scott Jamieson- 1pt e/w @ 40/1 - Skybet   12th in Qatar and 5th in Dubai made for a very encouraging start to the season and built on the promise of his rookie season in 2011. He made the cut here last year but finished well down the field although he had only played a couple of events by that time. Jamieson is now much more experienced and with 6 top ten finishes in just over a year on tour he’ll be looking to make the next step and get his maiden victory. It’s debatable whether this course will entirely suit the Scot but I’m banking on his current fine form to serve him well here.

  11. Re: European Tour 2012: Dubai Desert Classic Good luck all :ok Thomas Bjorn – 2pts win @ 30.00 Betfair Rather like Paul Lawrie, Bjorn has been playing the best golf of his career in the last year. A three time winner in 2011, to go with a victory in Portugal in 2010, has set Bjorn’s sights firmly on the Ryder Cup,Bjorn used to look like a man who wobbled under pressure but now he seems to thrive in the heat of competition. He has had a decent start to the year, 3rd in Abu Dhabi he then finished 25th inQatar despite opening with a 79, he played the final two rounds in -11 to send him to Dubai in good spirits. A former winner of this tournament back in 2001, the Dane can build on his fantastic 2011 and get his first win of this year on a course he clearlylikes. Alex Noren – 1pt e/w @ 66/1 Bet365 Noren is another player who had a superb 2011, winning twice at the Nordea Masters and the Wales Open. Had a slow start to the year in Abu Dhabi where he never really got going and although he made the cut he finishedwell down the field. Since then he skipped Qatar favouring practise in the Middle East so he should be ready to go here. He withdrew from this tournament last year but prior to that had some encouraging finishes, 27th in 2010and 22nd in 2009. If you look at the courses where Noren won last year, then Dubai fits the bill as a setup that should suit his game, fairly long, plenty of water, generous greens but a tough test. Simon Dyson – 1pt e/w @ 50/1 StanJames I’m a big fan of Dyson and not just because he’s a fellow Yorkie, he’ll have the Ryder Cup very firmly on his radar this year and will be desperate to get some early points on board. Another player who had a double win in 2011, winning the Irish Open and the KLM Dutch Open, he can win big tournaments and has become one of the tours most consistent performers. T17th in Abu Dhabi he then skipped Qatar to be fresh for the challenge in Dubai. His course form is solid 28th(2011) 56th (2010) 32 (2009) 25th (2008) and 7th (2007), never in the money but always making the cut, last year was the best of Dyson’s career and to me he isa player on an upward curve and worth backing at a decent price. Soren Hansen – 1pt e/w @ 90/1 Bet365 Continuing the Scandinavian theme this week, like his fellow Dane Thomas Bjorn, Hansen comes into this tournament with some good vibes after finishing 5th in Qatar. The former RyderCup player is twice a winner on tour but that’s probably an under achievement for such a fine ball striker. Hansen has some decent course form here, he finished 20th in 2010 and 6th in 2008 sohe knows how to score well at the Emirates GC. Hopefully his final round 66 will propel him to further success this week.

  12. Re: European Tour: Qatar Masters 2nd-5th Feb Cheers guys! Was a bit worried when Day and Garcia were on the charge but Lawrie was maginificent today, never knew he could hit it that well. Scott Jamieson almost put the icing on the cake by getting into the top ten, finished one shot shy and T12, gave me a good run though.

  13. Re: European Tour: Qatar Masters 2nd-5th Feb Scott Jamieson top 10 finish, 2pts @ 32 Betfair Got tempted by one more bet when I saw the price. Jamieson had a great rookie year on tour in 2011, he came close to winning a number of times and totalled 5 top ten finishes. In addition he also had an 11th, 12th and 13th place, quite some first year for the Scot. After securing his card he went off the boil a bit but started this year with an encouraging T24 in the Joburg Open. He missed the cut last week in Abu Dhabi but he'd only just returned from honeymoon and presumably hadn't been doing any practice. Hopefully he should be back up to speed this week and if he can rediscover his form of last year he can go well.

  14. Re: European Tour: Qatar Masters 2nd-5th Feb Interesting comments from Robert Karlsson on twitter today, he said the rough is much shorter than last year and if the wind doesn't blow then scores will be low. It is actually forecast to be pretty windy on Thurs/Fri (20mph+) before calming down on the weekend. Paul Lawrie – outright 1pt e/w @ 60/1 Bet365 (now best priced 50/1 general) Surprised to see this price on Paul Lawrie, was even more surprised when he was 66/1 on Skybet but I was too slow off the mark to get that. T8 in Abu Dhabi continued a fine run of form for Lawrie who finished 2nd at the Dubai World Championships at the end of last year and then started this season with T10 at Fancourt. Lawrie has been transformed from a grumpy old man to a player with a new lease of life after his win at the Open de Andalucia last year, he followedthat up with 2 top five finishes which made for his best year since his Open win. He T19th in Doha last year and the forecast of strong winds can only be to Lawrie’s benefit, playing in Aberdeen it’s second nature to him. Lorenzo Gagli - outright 1pt e/w @ 110/1 Bet365 Like Striker, I’m a big fan of this guy and think he’s on of the brightest young talents to emerge on the tour. 2011 was a breakthrough year for Gagli after graduating from the Challenge Tour, 6 top ten finishes last year suggest a guy on an upward curve and the verge of his first win. 35th place in Abu Dhabi was a solid start to his year and he can build on that in his first start in Qatar. He is a very accurate driver (top 10 in driving accuracy) andwhile he isn’t the longest he’s not short off the tee either, 1st in GIR on tour in 2011 he needs a sometimes troublesome putter to fire to get himself in contention. It’s often windy in Doha so the ability to play in testing conditions is important, Gagli had decent finishes in Scotland, Ireland and the Open de France which all have testing weather and that suggests he’s up to the challenge. Mark Foster – outright 1pt e/w @ 110/1 Bet365 Although Foster hasn’t won on tour since 2003 he has probably played the best golf of his life in the last couple of years. After opening with a 75 in Abu Dhabi he played well in the remaining rounds to finish 17th,at one stage on Sunday he got to within 3 or 4 shots of the lead before leaking a few shots when pushing for birdies. T12th in Doha last year was the sign of a player coming to terms with the course after a couple of missed cuts in previous years, it was the start of a good year for Foster who went on to record 4 top five finishes and represent GB & Ireland in the Seve Trophy. As I said, I think he’s pretty near the peak of his game and he may well be inspired by Robert Rock’s win last week
