  1. Re: European Tour 2012: Nordea Masters 6-9 June Just noticed this is a rare Wednesday start on the European Tour and almost missed it. Good luck chaps. Damien McGrane 1pt e/w @ 80/1 Paddy Power The weather always seems to be abysmal for this tournament, certainly the last two years it has been grim and it's not a great forecast this week. McGrane is a player who doesn't mind it tough, T16 and T8 here the last two years he has the experience to handle most conditions. T28 in Wales he comes here in decent shape to have a good crack at adding to his one tour win. Joel Sjoholm 1pt e/w @ 100/1 Stan James T8 in Wales the chunky Swede gave it a great run in the final round at Celtic Manor to continue what has been a decent year. He's looking to emulate his great mate Thorbjorn Olesen and become a first time winner on tour and the flamboyant Swede wil love playing in front of his home crowd. Swedish players have won the last two events here and Sjoholm can hopefully make it a hat-trick.

  2. Re: European Tour 2012: Wales Open 31 May - Jun 3 Good luck chaps! Cutting it a bit fine this week.... I think the only way that things could go worse than last week would be if one of my selections actually died during the tournament. Soren Kjeldsen 1pt e/w @ 45/1 Paddy Power (now 40/1) I backed Kjeldsen last week and he missed the cut after being - 4 for his first seven holes so it’s fair to say he fell apart a bit after that. I’m not going to be put off by one bad performance after a run of very good form, before he missed the cut his last 6 finishes read T5, T3, T16, T29, T20, T2. He’s made the cut every time he’s played the Twenty Ten course so I’m expecting him to bounce back strongly after last week. Bernd Wiesberger 1pt e/w @ 50/1 Coral The Austrain claimed his maiden win a few weeks ago by winning the Ballentines in Korea, it was a hugely impressive performance during which he romped away from the field on a tough course. He finished 53rd at the PGA at the weekend but shot two nice rounds in the 60s and he would have finished way higher but for a horror 83 in round three. Was 26th here back in 2009 when he was playing on the Challenge Tour and with a win under his belt I would expect him to go better this week. Thomas Bjorn 1pt e/w @ 45/1 Boylesports There were some signs at the PGA that Thomas Bjorn is starting to find a bit of form, a 70 in tough conditions in the second round and a closing 69 will have helped with his confidence. After winning 3 times last year it’s a bit of a surprise that the Dane’s best finish this season is 3rd in Abu Dhabi but illness has meant he’s not played as much as he would like. He has a best placed finish of 9th here in 2010, he was actually in second place going into the final round but faded away after being paired with the self destructing Marcel Siem. Bjorn is one of the tour’s most senior players and in a weak field like this I think he’s definitely worth backing at this price.

  3. Re: European Tour 2012: BMW PGA Championship Martin Laird 1pt e/w @ 50/1 Sportingbet Pseudo-Scotsman Laird is an infrequent visitor to these shores but he is over for the PGA this week, presumably to try and get some Ryder Cup points. Laird’s last appearance was at the Players where he played superbly for second place, it had been a pretty average season before that but that should give him the momentum to kick on. Not sure Laird has played Wentworth before but it should suit his game, he is plenty long enough off the tee to take advantage of the par 5s and has been hitting a lot of GIR this season, if he can maintain some for with the putter then he can have a good run at a decent price. Robert Karlsson 1pt e/w @ 66/1 Stan James The big Swede shot a course record 62 in the third round in 2010 after famously making an overnight dash from Monaco when he thought he’d missed the cut. He went on to finish 13th then, the two years before that he finished 32 and 3rd so he clearly knows his way around Wentworth. It’s not been a great season on the PGA Tour for him with a best placed finish of 12th but he is a class act and this could be the week where he finds some form. * Soren Kjeldsen 1pt e/w @ 55/1 Paddy Power The Dane has been in cracking form so far this year, his last 6 finishes read T5, T3, T16, T29, T20, T2 and all he needs to top that off is a win. He has course form as well having finished 3rd here in 2009 (and top ten the year before) and the Dane knows how to win having won 3 times on the tour before. One of the things I like about Kjeldsen is that he is a great competitor who never gives up and is capable of putting together some great birdie runs when the mood strikes. He also has the advantage of being able to stay at home this week as he lives just down the road in Ascot Thorbjorn Olesen 1pt e/w @ 100/1 Paddy Power I’m surprised to see Olesen available at three figures again, I thought that his value might have gone after his win in Sicily so I’m happy to take this price. This season Olesen has confirmed what many suspected last year and that is that he is class act destined for big things. He T5 last time out in Spain so his form remains good, although he missed the cut here last year that was his debut on the course and he’d only been on the tour a few months at the time.

  4. Re: PGA Tour 2012: Crowne Plaza Invitational I’ve also backed English at 100/1 (1pt e/w) Not a lot to add to what Aidy said, he was going great at the Players until he nearly killed a spectator with his opening tee shot in the 3rd round (it might have helped if he’d bothered to shout fore!) Not surprisingly that really shook him up and he faded badly but after his Open qualifying on Monday (he followed the 60 with a 63 in the second round) he is back to form. Quality ball striker who is surely going to win sooner rather than later. Tim Clark 1pt e/w @ 135/1 Stan James I’ve always had a soft spot for Tim Clark ever since he won me a load of money by winning the Scottish Open back in 2005, (I learned a valuable lesson that day, which was not to tell the missus about any winnings as she’ll think it’s only right and proper that I spend most of it on her) It was such a shame for Clark that just after he cracked America by winning the Players in 2010 he suffered from a series of injuries. He appears to be much healthier now having strung together 7 starts in 2012 and he had an encouraging T25 at the Players last time out. Not surprisingly Clark has looked rusty this year but he is improving, it is going to come together sooner or later and it could well be at Colonial where he has a fantastic record. T12 in 2007, T2 in 2008 and T2 in 2009 this is a course that suits Clark’s ball striking perfectly.

  5. Re: European Tour 2012: Open de Espana - 3-6 May Michael Hoey 2pts win @ 130 Betfair The Northern Irishman has a remarkable recent record on the European Tour having won 3 times in his last 27 starts and yet you can still get well over 100/1 on him. He was a winner in Morocco in March and this came on the back of two wins in 2011 and it would be no surprise if he were to have another win this season. He tends to prosper in windy conditions as his victories in Madeira and Morocco would testify, so the forecast windy conditions in Seville should be right up his street. He played here in 2010 and missed the cut but he withdrew from his next two tournaments so he may well have been carrying an injury back then. For a guy who has such a good recent win ratio I just have to back him at this price. Richie Ramsay 1pt e/w @ 50/1 Bet365 Ramsay finished a distant second to Bernd Wiesberger in Korea last week but it was an excellent display of ball striking from the Scot who is chasing his second European tour win. Ramsay is another player who goes well in the wind and as a very accurate driver should be able to keep out of the deep rough that has apparently grown around the course after a wet spring. A quality ball striker Ramsay seems to enjoy playing in Spain having finished 3rd last year in Andalucia and at the Castello. On his debut on this course back in 2008 he finished a creditable 37th and providing the globe trotting hasn’t taken too much out of him he could make another profitable trip to Spain. * James Morrison 1pt e/w @ 110/1 Bet365 * Morrison has made four of his last five cuts without ever getting near the business end of the leaderboard, he seems to have a couple of very good rounds missed in with a couple of pretty dire ones. It does indicate that his game isn’t too far away from clicking fully and he seems to be quite positive about how things are going. Very accurate off the tee Morrison should be able to keep the ball on the cut stuff and this is a venue where he finished 2nd back in 2010 after losing out in a playoff to local hero Alvaro Quiros. *

  6. Re: Euro Tour 2012: China Open 19th Apr - 22nd Apr Ricardo Gonzalez @ 125/1 (1pt e/w) The big Argentine was going great guns for three rounds last week in Malaysia before a closing 78 knocked him right down the field. He was right in it after 54 holes and that gives him a lot to build on this week. The course at Binhai Lake is being used for the first time this week but it is long and pretty open off the tee which should suit Gonzalez. He's won a few times on tour and hopefully can get in contention to win another at a generous price.

  7. Re: The Masters, Augusta 5th - 8th April 2012 Many congratulations to Aidy, Hornet and Bowles on backing Bubba! Also to Cosmetic Bob for a couple of superb e/w selections at very nice prices. Absolutely superb final day that had pretty much everything, two holes in one, an albatross and a 28 handicappers shank.

  8. Re: The Masters, Augusta 5th - 8th April 2012 Bob, you were right about Hanson, he was a huge price! Good luck with it today (although not too much luck as I'm on Phil!) Couple of interesting stats, 19 of the last 21 winners have been in the final pairing on Sunday. Since 1991 only Zach Johnson has started the final round worse than tied 2nd and gone on to win. I think the winner has to come from the current top 4, the others look too far back barring a miracle round.

  9. Re: The Masters, Augusta 5th - 8th April 2012 1pt Bubba Watson to lead after the 2nd round - 12/1 Stan James I thought Bubba played nicely yesterday, the soft course and slower greens seem to suit him and he is well placed 2 behind Westwood. You never know with Bubba (and neither does he) but he looked like he can go low today. I was expecting him to be about 8 or 9/1 so am happy to take the 12s.

  10. Re: The Masters, Augusta 5th - 8th April 2012 Jason Dufner - 1st round leader 0.75 pts e/w @ 80-1 Ladbrokes (5 places) Dufner, although a first timer here has made fast starting a bit of speciality, his last five opening rounds on tour have been 64, 72, 66, 66, 66. He also shot a first round in the 60s twelve times on tour in 2011, I’ve no idea how Dufner will take to Augusta but due to his habit of starting fast I’ll take him here. YE Yang - 1st round leader 0.75 pts e/w @ 100-1 Bet365 (5 places) Yang looks a nice price here, the last two years he has opened with a 67 at Augusta. It wasn’t good enough to lead either time but in 2010 he was just one shot off the lead in 2nd and in 2011 he was placed in 3rd, at a ¼ the odds for a place he’s well worth a bet

  11. Re: The Masters, Augusta 5th - 8th April 2012 I am soooo looking forward to this week, stocked up on beer and snacks and been chopping and changing the shortlist for a while. I’ve ruled out all the rookies given that only Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 has managed it, I’ve also generally looked for experience and a couple of decent Augusta finishes, combined with some current form and came up with… Rory McIlroy 5pts win @ 7.2 Betfair The best thing about Tiger’s win (for those who don’t want to back him here) is that it has put everybody else’s odds on the drift. For 54 holes here last year Rory was superb and looked like he was going to sprint away from the field, his meltdown has been well documented but it’s how you bounce back that matters. His romp at the US Open dispelled any doubts about his temperament and rubber stamped his superstar credentials, his last 10 starts he’s finished 2nd, 2nd, T4, 1st, 11th, 2nd, T5, 2nd, 1st, 3rd. The one nagging doubt would be that that he probably doesn’t convert as many winning positions as he should but that will surely change with time and majors carry much more motivation. McIlroy’s putting has definitely improved since last year and I think he matured a lot after the horrors of the back nine, obviously he’ll be desperate to wipe away that memory by winning his first green jacket here. Augusta is made for Rory’s game, his natural draw is perfectly suited to the shape of so many of the holes and his massively high ball flight is a huge advantage is keeping the ball on the green. If he can handle the expectation then there’s no reason why he can’t be donning the first of many green jackets come*Sunday night. Phil Mickleson 3pts win @ 14.0 Betfair I generally think anything over*10/1*is a great price on Mickleson, after all he’s won 3 of the last 8 times he’s been there. There’s no doubt that at this stage of his career it’s all about major championships and for Phil, that means the Masters. Winner here in 2004, 2006 and*2010 he loves the place, I thought he looked in decent enough shape at the weekend although I think his mind was more on Augusta than it was the tournament he was playing. Experience is a key factor here and Mickleson has that in spades, he and Bones are very good at working out where best to leave the ball, when it’s more sensible to actually miss the green and where and when to go for it. I think the fact that he has to fade the ball here rather than draw it tends to help him as his draw has a tendency to turn into a hook, his putting stats have been excellent this year and his genius (for finding) and getting out of trouble remains. With a lot of the hoopla and attention on Tiger and Rory it’s a good chance for Phil to have a bit of a lower key build up than normal. Trevor Immelman 1.5pt e/w @ 100/1 Paddy Power The 2008 champion is another player who clearly loves this course, the fact that he has managed to finish in the top 20 in the three years since that win is remarkable given that he has missed so much golf through injury (he also has a T5 in 2005). His health appears to be improving though and he’s now able to play with much more regularity and that can only be a good thing. He has always been an excellent putter and generally possesses a very good short game, he’s not long off the tee but he hits it far enough to give himself a chance. While he’s not won since that Masters victory there have been signs that his game is really coming back, he ended the fall series in 2011 with a 5th*and 6th*place finishes, T11 in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in his final warm up hinted that he could have a decent run here. Brandt Snedeker 1.5 pts e/w @ 80/1 Paddy Power Snedeker played in the final group with Trevor Immelman back in 2008 on his way to a third place finish, a T15 last year confirmed that despite not being the longest off the tee the American can compete here. It’s perhaps not surprising that he goes well as he has one of the best short games on tour, an excellent chipper he is also bit of a wizard with the flat stick and is one of the best putters on tour, particularly from short range. All that stands him in good stead and with a win already under his belt this year he should be ready for a good run here. Martin Laird 1.5 pts pt e/w @ 125/1 e/w Paddy Power Twice a winner on the PGA tour the Scot made his Masters debut last year and finished T20, two rounds in the sixties promised much though and I’m hopeful that he can build on that here. Ranking 17th*in driving distance and 10th*in GIR are a solid basis for a challenge although he needs to improve his putting to contend. What I like about Laird is that like Rory he has a very high ball flight, although his stock shot is now a slight fade he can draw the ball. Two top 5 finishes this season have kept Laird bubbling along and if he can have a decent week with the putter then I’m hopeful of a good run at a tasty price. Total 17 pts
