  1. Re: Rugby Union: Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge 14th-17th

    Montpellier32 - 8 (9 - 8) Newcastle
:nanaFirst one of the weekend goes in! I have watched the odds tumble on this result all day, from 4/9 (1/2 in some places) down to 1/5, not sure how much the bookies would have lost but they certainly got this one wrong! I was sweating & swearing in equal measures for the last 10 minutes, as I had the correct winning margin after 70 mins, but with only two points to spare! :beer I hope there was plenty of you on this one!
  2. Amlin Challenge Cup

Thursday 14 October 2010 Home Draw Away BPP
    maximize.gif Montpellier Hérault v Newcastle Falcons (19:45 BST) 1.5 23 3.25 101.78 %
Here we go for another weekend of nail biting Rugby! The first game is tomorrow night in Montpellier and the teams are as follows: The teams: Montpellier: 15 Pierre Bérard, 14 Quentin Doumayrou, 13 Seta Tuilevuka, 12 Grant Rees, 11 Dimitri Pelo, 10 Santiago Fernandez, 9 Benoit Paillaugue, 8 Giorgi Chkhaidze, 7 Johan Wasserman, 6 Vassili Bost ©, 5 Goncalo Uva, 4 Lionel Dargier, 3 Kevin Kervarec, 2 Joan Caudullo, 1 Na'ama Leleimalefaga. Replacements: 16 Fabien Rofes, 17 George Jgenti, 18 Sébastien Petit, 19 Marc Giraud, 20 Adrien Tomas, 21 Raphael Lagarde, 22 Florian Nicot, 23 Michel Macurdy. Newcastle: 15 Alex Tait, 14 Luke Fielden, 13 Luke Eves, 12 Andy Henderson, 11 Charlie Amesbury, 10 Joel Hodgson, 9 Chris Pilgrim, 8 Allister Hogg ©, 7 Redford Pennycook, 6 Brent Wilson, 5 Glen Townson, 4 Filipo Levi, 3 Kieran Brookes, 2 Joe Graham, 1 Grant Shiells. Replacements: 16 Rob Vickers, 17 Darren Fearn, 18 James Hall, 19 Tim Swinson, 20 Mark Wilson, 21 Micky Young, 22 James Fitzpatrick, 23 Tom Catterick. The biggest thing about this game is the eighteen year old (yes 18!) at Fly Half for Newcastle, Joel Hodgson. Manning is out injured, Hodgson came on as a sub against Bourgoin last week and is reckoned to be quite a prospect. He was quite lively when he got his chance last week and I am all for bringing through the youth, but up against a side like Montpellier you are not going to get an easy ride even if you were Dan Carter. 4/9 is massive in favour of the Montpellier win and this is almost worth putting the house on it! I thought Montpellier may at best get a losing bonus point away against Exeter last game, but they took the win against a tough side. Montpellier are unbeaten at home this season, against the like of Toulouse, Racing Metro & Castres. The closest resembling game, to this one could be when they played La Rochelle, winning 26-6 and I fancy something very similar tomorrow against a weakened Newcastle, who didn't impress me in their last match. Looking at the other odds for this game, it's like being a kid in a sweet shop with loads of money! The handicap is only -5 against Montpellier. Skybet offer 8/13 for Montpellier getting to 10pts first.
  3. Re: Rugby Union-Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge Toulon v Ospreys -3 against Toulon is easily achievable for a Toulon side dripping with talent, this is not to say Opsrey's are not but they do not have the money of the French. Osprey's however do boast the second best defence in the Magners League, but their worst defeat away was against Munster 22-10 and you must think that with the nagging boot of Mr Wilkinson today, something of the same could be on the cards! Toulon had a shaky start to the season but have been steadily improving so this will also count in their favour. Ospreys did have a good away win at the Scarlets, in their last game but the worrying stat about that game was the six penalties Stephen Jones kicked over for the Scarlets. Give away that amount of penalties today and they will suffer the consequences! Toulon points difference 6-10 9/2 & a little look at 11-15 @ 15/2

  4. Re: Rugby Union-Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge

I do think Ulser will come out of that group though, and ill be lumping on before tomorrows game.
Solid start for the Ulstermen homercleese and I wouldn't be too upset if the Ulstermen did top the group, as I have a bit of a soft spot for them (family links etc.). But in the match reports they seem to lack composure in the first half and they cannot aford to do this away from home! STAND UP FOR THE ULSTERMEN!!! :clap
  5. Re: Rugby Union-Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge Leinster v Racing Metro Even with Racing's issues at Fly Half (first two choices out injured) -9 is a big ask for Leinster, Racing have only been beaten once this season by more than nine, away from home and that was against Montpellier. Leinster do have a host of Irish internationals in their side, but as Castres proved last night the French do not go away now for a jolly! Also Dave Sexton starts for the first time this season for Leinster, so how match fit will he be? I'll still believe Leinster will win but I will take points difference of

    Leinster by 1-5 11/2
    Leinster by 6-10 :void(0)'>11/2
    On offer with Skybet.
  6. Re: Rugby Union-Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge Yes, homercleese! Newcastle took their chances, which is what it is all about I suppose, but Bourgoin & Newcastle's basic ball skills were rubbish. The commentators made this game sound a lot better than it actually was, Bourgoin missed too many first up tackles, their defensive set up was average and Newcastle were no better than they were against Quins last week!

  7. Re: Rugby Union-Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge Hi Homercleese, I certainly wouldn't put you off Bourgoin tonight, in fact I might join you. I watched Newcastle at Quins last Saturday, it wasn't the best game of Rugby & Newcastle were made to look better than they are by a misfiring Quins team. No Gopperth shows you how serious Newcastle are about this competition, not very and his kicking may well be missed this evening! I just taken the plunge with Bourgoin @ Skybet with the winning margin. 1-5pts 9/1 6-10pts 14/1 & covered myself with the 11-15pts @ 30/1 Apologies to all those Geordie fans, I took a closer look at the Bourgoin side and they are not coming with the reserves!

  8. Re: Rugby Union-Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge Heineken Cup Pools 1-Northampton have started the season all guns blazing, but lack the experience of their closest rivals Cardiff in this competition. I cannot choose between the two but Edinburgh away may well be the downfall of one of these sides. 2-What a group, in World Cup terms this is the group of death! Clermont are rightly favorites but realistically any of these teams could win the pool. 3-Munster will miss Mafi, after his suspension but still ooze class elsewhere. Toulon are finding their feet after a quiet start to the Top 14 and also lack experience in this competition, however Mr Wilkinson is still doing the business for them and will delight in taking on Mr O'Gara! London Irish sometimes let themselves down in this competition, but they do have the potential to score quicks points and are strong enough to compete in the forwards. Ospreys may struggle, but I write them off at my peril. I would argue that they have had an easy start to the Magner's League and they have already lost away to Munster in that competition. 4-Bath or Biarritz? On the one hand you have Bath who have started well but just got blitzed by their local rivals, who were struggling and then on the other you have a team that were misfiring at times, this season and then went and beat their local rivals! Bath will miss Moody, but Barkley has started the season well for them. "What about Ulster!" I hear you cry, I love Ravenhill, although they will not be beaten at home, I fear they may well struggle on their travels and when they have won it has not been by much, in their Magner's League games this season. 5-Leicester will have a tough start without a recognised Fly Half, if they can make a good start and then Flood returns they may well finish top, but they have leaked tries this season! Perpignan due to injuries have started the Top 14 slowly and because of this, come the latter stages their minds may well be on finishing higher in the Top 14. Treviso were a surprise last year, beating Perpignan 9-8 on the opening weekend last season and they are packed full of Italian internationals. An upset on the cards again this season? Scarlets have been scoring lots of points in the Magners but not really against any of the big guns yet and may rely too heavily on Stephen Jones. 6-TOULOUSE!!! Need I say anymore, with the others beating each other in equal measures. My bets- Bath 11/10-Biarritz will not enjoy Ravenhill in January! Cracking last match match Biarritz v Bath. Perpignan 2/1-With Leicester at 4/9, this is too good to miss! Racing Metro 6/1 & Saracens 5/2 The two sides at home on the final pool games, this pool could really be that close and home advantage could be crucial.

  9. Re: Rugby Union-Heineken Cup & Amlin Challenge One stand out price for me in the Amlin Challenge, Montpellier at 40/1! Currently sitting fourth in the Top 14, they are unbeaten at home this season and that includes victories against Racing Metro & Toulouse! In their Pool stage they face up to Bourgoin who face an uphill struggle to survive in the Top 14!, Exeter who will love this competition, but they will want to survive their first season in the Premiership! And Newcastle who are already struggling to survive in the Premiership! A bit of a re-occuring theme amongst their rivals. A lot will depend on who Montpellier choose to play for them, but at least for the pool stage their reserves may well do the job for them!

Bourgoin v Brive A 14-14 draw last season and Brive are the side with more confidence after their draw with Toulouse last week, after being on top a large parts of the match. +4 Brive is good enough for me! Perpignan v La Rochelle La Rochelle have been improving away from home, at their last away game against Montpellier they only lost by 20 points to the Top 14 leaders. Perpignan are an improving side, however they do not tend to win by much and they must go for the bonus point win today! Can La Rochelle score? This is the big question, if they can they may well frustrate Perpignan but if they don't then 5 points for Perpignan. No Bet for me. Clermont v Agen Agen have got beaten soundly on their travels this season, the closest result was losing by 7 against Bourgoin, other wise it has been +20 everytime! -26 should be achievable by a side like Clermont but I wouldn't take the gamble on this sort of margin. Stade Francais v Montpellier Cannot trust Stade Francais at the moment, reality is they must win by 7 to prove their ambitions, but at the moment their defence is very average! No Bet Toulouse v Racing Metro The visitors will be without playmaker Juan-Martin Hernandez but are hopeful Chabal will be fit to play after missing the last two matches due to a fractured rib. 28-23, last season so -7 against Toulouse could be achievable for the visitors. However on their travels, when Racing Metro have played the stronger teams they have not faired so well, especially against Montpellier losing 36-19 and without Hernandez! I'll take Toulouse at -7 Bayonne v Biarritz DING DING Round 1! What a fight, sorry Rugby match, nothing like a fierce local derby to finish the weekend. Last year Bayonne won 15-0, which if I remember rightly it was the first time they had won this encounter for a while. Too close to call this one, just sit back and watch!

Hi Milan, believe me when I say "I feel your pain!". What a c**p start to the weekend, I'm beginning to believe that some Rugby teams are like my least favorite jockeys and should be avoided at all costs! Quins v Newcastle Alan Tait has made a lot of changes to try and inspire his Newcastle side. I doubt if this will help as Newcastle probably wont get much of the ball to play with! Quins game is all about pace and keeping the ball, when you see what Irish did to Newcastle last week with both of these, I can only expect the same result. This game ended 23-14, last season so you might argue that -14 is a bit of an ask for Quins, but I believe Quins are currently a better than at this stage last season and Newcastle are not! Quins -14 L.Irish v Leeds Leeds are another side who have made lots of changes to try and kick start their season, but what a side to try and do this against! -21 doesn't give Irish room for too many mistakes, judging by their performance last week they should do it, but I am going to give this one a miss! Northampton v Exeter I watched Exeter get blitzed by Quins last week and you could argue that they were slighty unlucky to get done this way. But they got penalised in vital areas and were naive in others, the same today and it will be the same as last week. Northampton have named a strong side (as always), if you can find -21 or less for Northampton then you have a bet. Saracens v Leicester -6 for Sarries is more than achievable against a Leicester side who are leaking tries and who are lacking experience at Fly Half. Leicester have also been forced to rest alot of their internationals, where as Sarries bring back Schalk Brits, Hugh Vyvyan and Petrus du Plessis to the pack, while wing Michael Tagicakibau and scrum-half Richard Wigglesworth also feature. Sarries for me!
  13. Re: Rugby Union 1st-3rd October Toulon v Castres I said that I would leave Toulon alone! Ah well here goes, -10 should be achievable for a much improving Toulon side, Castres away from home against the bigger clubs have seemingly struggled. Although they did nearly beat Stade Francais in Paris, only losing by 6, but more recently they have lost 24-6 against Clermont & 23-12 in Montpellier. This should be a good test for Toulon but surely they must cover the handicap to rubber stamp their title credentials!

  14. Re: Rugby Union 1st-3rd October Bath V Gloucester -11 against Bath is not enough! Last season this fixture ended 24-8 to Bath and something similar should happen tomorrow. Gloucester were probably a better side at that point last season than they currently are and they will also be missing Tim Taylor who scored most of their points in their victory over Wasps last week. Gloucester are a poor side currently and only average 1.5 tries per game, away from home and this is simply not enough against a classy Bath outfit! Bath all the way!

  15. Re: Rugby Union 1st-3rd October Sale v Wasps I cannot believe Wasps are favorites for this game when you look at what they have achieved so far this season! There is also an early season form line with Newcastle, although Wasps were away and Sale at home, Sale 35-18 Newcastle Newcastle 29-17 Wasps There are also some very helpful stats regarding both sides, currently Wasps are the 2nd best at losing lineouts, joint 3rd in most turnovers and 1st at most rucks lost. Where as Sale are top at most rucks won! Just these figures alone would draw me more towards Sale, but tomorrow they also welcome back their talisman in Charlie Hodgson! Sale are an unfashionable side but at home very few sides get the better of them, Quins nearly did and I believe they are a better side than Wasps and they had a h'cap of -3 and were 5/4 for the win! Weather may play a part tomorrow, as it looks like there is a lot of rain on its way and this should increase the home field advantage even more. Mr Hodgson may well play a crucial kicking role and if he has to come off then he has a very able substitute in Macleod! Sale win for me!

A mixed bag of results but at this early stage the league is already taking shape! Bath-Looking like a top four side, will be dangerous at home against everyone and then away from home expect them to beat the bottom four clubs. Exeter-A big aggressive side who competed with Harlequins yesterday up until half time and then got blown away. They will struggle against the top sides away from home but at home they will match everyone and they look like survivors! Gloucester-A poor side with a good squad, confidence seems to be the key here and they will be lucky if they make the top six. At home they may struggle against the top four sides and away they will struggle against everyone! Harlequins-I watched them play some exciting Rugby yesterday, they still lack a bit off aggression & control up front, but when they are in full flow they are a match for anyone! I expect a top six finish maybe even top four. Leeds-Not the same side as last season, they have lost their defense and they have tried to bring attack in at a cost to their defense. They have to beat the other four bottom clubs at home and try and pick up points away against those sides, but its not looking good! Leicester-Top four finish(No surprises there!) they will be a much better side when Flood returns and they just have to weather the storm until then, although the crushing of Leeds sent out a warning yesterday they still have to tighten up away from home. London Irish-Awesome against Newcastle, they unearthed new talent again in the backs and they are certainly bound for a top four finish! Newcastle-A lot more work to be done here, very naive in defence yesterday and they are in the relegation dogfight already. Friday nights at home are their best chance of survival ( no one wants to go there on a Friday!). Northampton-Quality side at the moment and looking potential champions! Sale-Big,bruising and no nonsense side who will compete with all. They will be strong at home but they may struggle on their travels and this is what will let them down potentially. Battling for that Heineken cup place is the best for Sale I fear. Saracens-Looking a little shaky in the front three (but this is being a little picky!) but exciting going forward, top four side and they should win their home games and deal with the leseer sides away from home. Wasps-Play with a lot of pride & passion but in defence they seem shaky, which is unusual for a Shaun Edwards side! Also their set piece in vunerable, but they score tries which is what this game is about. I cannot see them making the top 4 but they will be fighting for that Heineken cup place come the end of the season.
  18. Re: Rugby Union 24th-26th September Newcastle v London Irish Newcastle look to be a different team to last seasons outfit, this season they look like they hae solved their try scoring problem. Last year they relied too heavily on the boot of Gopperth and nearly paid for it. Alain Tait is trying to make Newcastle a tough place to visit and he has employed local talent to do this. It looks like it might pay off for him and although Rugby is all about try scoring I think todays game could be decided by the better kicker! My money will be on Gopperth and home field advantage, I like Ryan Lamb but he is a bit hit or miss with his kicking and with Armitage the potential replacement kicker, I still favour Gopperth to come out on top. Newcastle -3

Bath v Sale I do not see Bath being 14 points better then Sale tomorrow, Sale are not glamourous but they are tough up front. Their only other away game to date was against Saracens, where up until half time they were competing and they lost 28-13, to a late Strettle try. They also have a good looking kicker in Macleod! Gloucester v Wasps This is a game between two sides who are struggling to come to terms with the laws at the breakdown. But I cannot see past Gloucester at -1, yes they have had a bad start but Wasps are not setting the world alight! The Gloucester pack got bossed by the Irish pack last week but the week before they had bossed the Leeds pack and had streaked into a big lead before nearly losing it! With this in mind they should be strong enough to deal with Wasps. As long as they can cut out the errors and win the forward battle, Gloucester should easily account for Wasps and come Sunday this -1, could look like the steal of the weekend. :hope Leicester v Leeds -20 for Leicester maybe a bit of a task for a side that has uncharacteristically leaked tries this season. They are also struggling at Fly Half, although Staunton plays he went of against Wasps last week with an injury and they fell apart! I'll give this game a miss but I slightly favour Leeds with a 20 point start. Harlequins v Exeter Damn you Bookies! at -10 I would have been selling the kids, but at -13 they have it about right. I fully expect Exeter to get a lesson tomorrow but Quins are not settled in yet and may miss Monye. I'll be there watching tomorrow and Paddy Power offer 6/1 for the points difference of 11-15, so I might have a sniff at that!
  20. Re: Rugby Union 24th-26th September Bourgoin v Toulon Which Toulon will turn up? Not sure what is trying to be achieved down in Toulon but it doesn't involve scoring too may tries! No wonder Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal has asked Jonny to name his price, over a contract extension. He has been responsible for most of their points this season, especially away from home, 32 out of 37 scored! And for this reason I think a small bet in favour of Bourgoin +5 seems in order. Although they are propping up the table, Bourgoin have not disgraced themselves at home, at least they know how to get over the white line and they have a good kicker in Di Bernardo! I also do not see this as a high scoring affair, maybe around the 30-35 points in total.
