  1. Red October – 15.30 Redcar (Win SkyBet 9/2)

Red October has a classic middle distance pedigree and being drawn next to the probable pace setter, Red October should get a nice tow into this race. I expect top jockey James Doyle will take full advantage of this.

  2.

    Holdbacktheriver – 15.40 Fos Las (E.Way PP 12/1)

Holdbacktheriver is bred to be a top class chaser so the 12/1 on offer represents great value. His sire is “Presenting” whose prodigy always run well in staying chases particularly in soft conditions, “Denman” being the best example. His Dam is also the mother of top chaser “Kalashnikov” (half brother) who won at Aintree this week. The only downside is his lack of experience as this will only be his third chase start.

  3. Percy Alexander 18.00 Wolverhampton (Win 8/1 Bet365)

In his last race, following a slow start, “Percy A” was just getting going when the race was over.

Inexperienced with just four runs, the addition of first time blinkers and the extra 1.5f suggest it’s time to get serious.

Sired by a Derby winner, middle distances can only be to the benefit of “Percy”.

Could not resist, good luck all and enjoy the national. PercyP

  4. Kadrizzi – 16.50 Leicester (E.Way Bet365 12/1)

At his peak Kadrizzi was rated at 104 and regularly ran in class two races including the Bunbury Cup. Something was clearly amiss during the winter of 2017/18 as his rating plummeted and he was then off the track for eight months. Since his return, he has never finished more than 5 lengths behind the winner.  With top jockey Adam Kirby in the saddle, back on grass and rated only 78, any small improvement will see him go close.

  5. Swiss Storm – 19.00 Chelmsford (Win Bet 365 3/1)

Can you image Frankel running in a handicap and getting weight from most of his rivals?

    It’s absurd, right!

Well tomorrow his son Swiss Storm finds himself in just that position. Having run just 10 times with a 50% win or place record, he may still have more to offer.

  6. Scorched Breath – 18.15 Kempton ( E.Way Bet 365 8/1)

Given his pedigree Scorched Breath has an excellent chance off an opening handicap mark of just 72. He is sired by the ultra-game Bated Breath (Group horse). Many of his prodigies have been rated between 85 and 116. On the Dam side Scorched Breaths’ half-brother is currently rated 103. He clearly has the potential to be far better than a class five handicapper.

  7. Withoutdestination  19.30 Wolverhampton (Win 10/3 Bet Victor)

Withoutdestination did not run as a two year old and he was pretty clueless in his first two races

this year. However, in his last race over 12f at Newcastle, the penny started to drop and he showed some

potential. Further improvement can be expected.

  8. Thank you Billy for a very enjoyable first month. Lots of placed horses but still looking for that first winner. I think I might of found it with a son of Oasis DDreamwho is also related to Gallieo. His 3 runs todate were just for experience and a big improvemeand can be expected in 2019.

    Shaleela's Dream 16.45 Chelmsford Eway 10/1 Bet365

  9. Both of Clive Cox's horses ran well today at Doncaster, so his string maybe more forward than most. I am looking to his Hulcote a lightly raced daughter of Frankel to end the month wih a winner. She has runn well in all four of her races, all over the 10f trip.

    Hulcote 16.20 Doncaster 7/1 Bet365

  10. Formerly trained by Aiden O'Brien in Ireland and a son of top sire Gallieo, better things were clearly expected of Pipes of Peace. A kempton regular he has form with the second favourite and is better off at the weights, so must have a chance and worth an eway bet

Pipes of Peace 15.15 Kempton Eway 28/1 W Hills

  11. Getting closer to that first winner Billy, the “Racer” was second at 12/1.

    Last Page 20.00 Kempton (Bet365 7/1)

Rated 94 as a two year old, Last Page competed with listed sprinters but his future could be over further. Following a change of trainer and a six month break, he returned to this track in January where he was well supported over 6f and only just failed to land the gamble by a nose. His only other run this year was at Lingfield where he tried 7f for the very first time and only gave way in the final few yards. With this experience under his belt and rated just 79, he should be race fit to do himself justice.

  12. Ryedale Racer 15.40 Hexham (PP = 14/1)

I am great believer in horses for courses and have found one. The “racer” has run eight times at Hexham winning twice and has only been out of the frame just once when he finished in fourth place. He definitely loves this track and provided he is fit enough to do himself justice he represents excellent value in a field where the other horses have questionable ability.

  13. Makaarim 19.15 Wolverhampton (E.way = Bet 365 12/1)

With 11 duck eggs in his last 11 races, how could I possibly pick this horse?

Three reasons; firstly, he is ridden by one of my favourite jockeys, Tom Queally (best known as the partner of the mighty Frankel) secondly, he has won both times he has run at Wolverhampton (so he clearly likes the place) and thirdly this is the lowest class race he has ever run in.

  14. Duel at Dawn a son of top NH sire presenting has been racing at the toughest tracks in the country. A Cheltenham Festival runner last year he has yet to live up to his obvious potential. His three runs this season have included the Tommy Whittle and a competitive class 1 Warwick Handicap, far better races than this. Excuses can be made for his latest run at Sandown where he was badly hampered by the mistake of a fellow runner upsetting him and his Rhythm. I think he is better than these.

    Duel at Dawn Exeter 16.20 (E.Way 20/1 Bet 365)

  15. If Welsh trainer Dai Rees has got Misty Mai back to anywhere near the form she showed in March 2018 she would have an excellent chance of taking the mares’ handicap chase at Bangor. “Mai” has been highly tried this year and hence her form figures are not impressive, however this has resulted in her rating dropping from 117 to 97.

Back in more appropriate company and carrying the minimum weight, she could cause a surprise.

    Misty Mai – 16.00 Bangor (E.Way = Bet365 14/1)

  16. The life of a jockey is not as glamorous as some people would imagine.

Richard Patrick in his quest to become champion conditional jockey had just one ride today at Chepstow in South Wales and tomorrow he travels nearly 400 miles to Musselburgh in Scotland, again for just one ride. A round trip of 800 miles, what a journey! The trip can only be worthwhile if he rides a winner. I shall take the hint.

    Kovera – 16.10 Musselburgh (Win = Sky Bet 7/2)

  17. It was nice to get my first return today albeit an E.W.third place @ 14/1.

Having sung the praises of young jockey Richard Patrick, I shall stick with him tomorrow and choose his only ride of the day.

Brigadier Bob 4.35 Chepstow (10/1 Bet 365 EWay).

Bob is an inexperienced 6 year old who has only run six times without seriously troubling the judge.

It was therefore somewhat surprising to see he started co-favourite in a 17 horse race last time out.

Clearly he must be showing some promise at home.

  18. I always keep an eye out for an up and coming jockey. Richard Patrick is a conditional jockey destined for the very top. He has an impressive win ratio and last week he rode for both Kerry Lee and Nicky Henderson at the festival. Tomorrow he rides one for in-form trainer Charlie Longsdon. Leith Hill Legasi 14.50 Chepstow (Eway 14/1 pp). With course form, a low weight and a great jockey he could go close.

  19. Trainer Ben Pauling is in red hot form with nine winners from his last 20 runners including one winner at Cheltenham. Tomorrow he sends 3 horses to Southwell. I am going for Imperial Knight (3.35 Southwell 3/1 on Bet 365) in the maiden. Though well beaten by the first two horses, he was still trying and finished the Ascot class 2 race off well and tomorrow he has the services of top jockey Nico de Boinville.
