  1. Re: A-League Round 9 - Newcastle vs Queensland (Oct 19th) Head-to-head Seven league meetings: Jets - 3 wins, Queensland - 3 wins, 1 draw Previous meeting Newcastle 1 Queensland 1 (EnergyAustralia Stadium, Hyundai A-League round two, September 2007) Past five results Newcastle: Win - Draw - Loss - Draw - Win Queensland: Win - Loss - Loss - Win - Win Newcastle hasn't yet hit its straps, while questions over its overseas imports persist, yet Gary van Egmond's side can take top spot in the Hyundai A-League with victory over the Roar this Friday. It might only be temporary with the league-leading Central Coast Mariners playing in Wellington on Sunday but it's a measure of Van Egmond's continuing influence over last year's preliminary finalists. Conversely, Queensland has enjoyed back-to-back wins over the past fortnight and will be looking for three in a row for the first time in the club's brief history, yet remain out of the playoff places on goal difference. The clubs are perfect examples of how tight the competition has become with just nine points separating top from bottom, a far cry from the corresponding stage last season when the gap was 17. Van Egmond welcomes back Olyroos representatives Mark Bridge and Adam D'Apuzzo while teenage midfielder James Holland keeps his place after a goalscoring debut in last week's 2-1 win over the Phoenix ahead of Stuart Musialik who missed the midweek international because of injury. Holland, who was born in Sydney and grew up on the Central Coast, made three Pre-Season Cup appearances for the Mariners last year including one against Roar in Toowoomba. Defender Adam Griffiths isn't named after a thigh problem while Van Egmond leaves out striker Jason Hoffman and midfielders Jorge Drovandi and Scott Tunbridge. After knocking off the league leaders last Sunday, Queensland's confidence is high although Farina will have to change a winning formula with Danny Tiatto's one-match ban forcing a midfield reshuffle. The Roar used youngster Chris Grossman in the holding role when Tiatto missed the round two clash against the Jets because of suspension while Stuart McLaren and Ben Griffin are other options. Korean Hyuk-Su Seo is another contender with Griffin switching to right-back. Makeshift left-back Josh McCloughan scored his second goal of the season last week in the 1-0 win over the Mariners and keeps his place ahead of fit-again Andrew Packer. McCloughan is one of two Roar players sitting on three yellow cards - Brazilian Marcinho is the other - while Matt Thompson, Griffiths and D'Apuzzo are all walking the tightrope for Newcastle.

Betting @ Bet365 QUEENSLAND $1-95 WELLINGTON $3-60 DRAW $3-25 Unbelievable to think Wellington could be at such huge odds when you consider their form. A 2-1 win over Sydney which was a great effort away from home. They then held Adelaide to a 2-2 in New Zealand before a 4-1 thumping of Perth last weekend. Compare that to Queensland who are struggling to score, especially at home, Wellington are super odds. Wellington are the best value I have seen in the A league for ages, especially the Asian Hcp. I don't have much time for a review but I think the Wellington defence has been first class this season and they are well capable of beating Queensland here. At those odds for a team who has picked up 7 points in their last three games to a team who has picked up none, then it says back me. Wellington to WIN @ $3-60 (Bet365)

Some good ins for the mariners and they will be hard to toss at home. Newcastle welcome back Joel Griffiths who is a big in for the Jets, along with Musialak and Spencer.

  7. Re: A-League Round 7 - Sydney vs Melbourne (Oct 6th) Ins for Sydney are Nikolas Tsattalios, David Zdrilic, Ben Vidaic and Adam Biddle who have all been promoted and no outs as yet. Sydney still have the following players unavailable Robbie Middleby (quad - 2-3 weeks), Jacob Timpano (thigh - 1-2 weeks), Michael Enfield (knee - indefinite), Ivan Necevski (ankle - 1-2 weeks). Melbourne welcome back Matthew KEMP from injury and nobody is out as yet. Melbourne Victory have not looked like losing a game as yet and it was only their inability to score that stopped them winning more games. RJ is right when he says they are good value at $3.10 because Sydney's form until recent weeks was very ordinary. The home side is looking a little better now but they will find it hard to break through the Victory defence.

With just five wins in its 24 matches to date, the Roar's all-time rate of home wins (21 percent) stands as the lowest of all current teams in the Hyundai A-League, with Perth Glory (25 percent home wins) the next lowest. Queensland will also be attempting to bump up their home goals record - with 24 goals in its 24 games to date, the Roar have by far the lowest home goals per game ratio, the next lowest being Perth Glory (1.3 goals per home game).

  9. Re: A league - Round 6 - Melbourne vs Queensland (Fri 28 Sep - 8pm) Great work AJ and Ads on tipping the Melbourne win at reasonable odds :ok The A League this season is basically down to who takes their chances. Roar should have had the opening goal but missed a sitter that a 10 year old could have got home. Queensland have more shots that anybody and last night they had more shots than Melbourne and they were the away team. If you could magically work out which side was going to convert on a given night then this league would be easy. Having said that, Central Coast and Melbourne appear the strongest sides quite easily, followed closely by the Jets.

  10. Re: A league - Round 6 - Melbourne vs Queensland (Fri 28 Sep - 8pm) Melbourne Victory 2 - 0 Queensland Roar 67m Muscat (penalty) 85m Thompson Melbourne Victory has secured its first win of the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League season, with a Kevin Muscat penalty and a late Archie Thompson special giving the champions a 2-0 success over Queensland Roar at Telstra Dome. The Victory had managed five draws before this match and a record-equalling sixth was on the cards before Leandro Love earned a penalty which the Victory skipper converted on 67 minutes. The Brazilian also had a hand in the second, lobbing the Roar defenders for Thompson squeeze the ball past an unlucky Liam Reddy on 85 minutes. Queensland again showed plenty of enthusiasm and was the better side for much of the match, but was ultimately let down by its execution. It now has one win, two draws and three loses to show from its first six games. Queensland coach Frank Farina felt the scoreline was not an accurate reflection of how the game panned out, but that the lack of finish was a major concern. It was a subdued opening 20 minutes from both sides with nothing to seriously trouble the keepers. Matthew McKay delivered a well-taken free kick which forced the Victory custodian Michael Theoklitos off his line. Reddy charged off his line soon after to hack a long ball to safety with Thompson lurking. The Victory's first clear chance came on 29 minutes from a miscued pass which found Love in acres of space on the right. The Brazilian picked out Danny Allsopp, with the striker's cute shot narrowly wide. The attacking thrusts looked more cohesive as the half wore on, but the quality chances weren't being created. Love, the liveliest player on the pitch, spoilt an excellent chance set up by Leigh Broxham with a rigid first touch and then shot wide after Thompson burst from inside the defensive half and delivered the ball to him on the edge of the box. In a late heart flutter for Theoklitos, he was forced to back-peddle and deflect Marcinho's cross over the bar to preserve the stalemate at half time. Early in the second half, Pantelidis pulled of an excellent challenge to thwart Simon Lynch as he burst clear on goal, while soon after Grant Brebner joined Danny Tiatto in Ben Williams' book. Daniel Piorkowski was the third player cautioned on 55 minutes. Bu the end of the game, seven players had received yellow cards. Rody Vargas produced a stunning goal-line clearance on the hour mark after Craig Moore crept forward and had beaten Theoklitos with his shot. Wrong-footed, Vargas raised his left leg to knock the ball clear. The game's first goal was created by Thompson, who received a long ball, ducked around his marker and crashed the ball into the bar. It deflected to Leandro, who was brought down by Sasa Ogenenovski, and Williams pointed to the spot. Muscat took his stunning run of penalty takes to a perfect 13 from 13 in the Hyundai A-League, smashing the ball into the top of the net. The Victory, energised by their first goal at home this season, pressed forward immediately sensing a second. But Thompson, clear in the box, headed wide. Michael Zullo came on for Lynch, and got under the home side's guard, almost equalising after hitting the post with his header and directing a shot from the rebound across the face. But the game was sealed when Love found space down the right, chipped the ball over to Thompson, who had no trouble slotting home goal number two for the season from a tight angle. The Qantas Socceroo could have had another but for McKay's desperate challenge. The Roar were not to be denied, and were unlucky not to get a goal when Theoklitos spilled from a goalmouth scramble, only for the ball to roll wide. The visitors laid siege to the Melbourne goal late on, but couldn't get through the Victory defence. Crowd: 25,622

Queensland have a fair record against Melbourne and I was at Telstra Dome last year when Queensland served it up to the Victory.

Melbourne are the likely victors if they can convert, but the away side are also a big chance if they can convert. Queensland are out to $3-50 on Sportingbet which is massive overs in my view. The Roar with an asian handicap bet is definitely worth a punt, although I am opting for a draw here tonight.

Do not have time for any other input but I believe this has all the makings of another Melbourne draw.

    Melbourne/Queensland to DRAW @ $3-30 (Sportingbet)

  12. Re: A league - Round 6 - Melbourne vs Queensland (Fri 28 Sep - 8pm) Allsopp, Muscat unlikely for melbourne Victory Melbourne Victory is likely to be without two of its most experienced players in Friday night's Hyundai A-League clash against Queensland at Telstra Dome. Victory coach Ernie Merrick has conceded that both skipper Kevin Muscat and striker Danny Allsopp are unlikely to play in the match, and the club has named a squad of 17, with Daniel Vasilevski and Kaz Patafta to come on to the bench if both Muscat and Allsopp are ruled out. Muscat failed to get through a full training session on Thursday, as he struggles to overcome a knee injury. Allsopp missed last week's 2-2 draw in Newcastle with a rib injury sustained against the Mariners the previous week. Merrick said the striker had not recovered as quickly as he would have hoped and may need another week on the sidelines. Matthew Kemp has been ruled out with a groin injury which is expected to sideline the former Adelaide United left back for a fortnight. Melbourne goes into the match looking to record its first win of the season after five consecutive draws. While he'd like to have had a win on the board already, Merrick is confident in the style of game the Victory are playing. But after failing to score at home in two games so far this season, Merrick did say he would go with three strikers, likely to be Leandro Love, Archie Thompson and Adrian Caceres.

  13. Re: A league - Round 6 - Sydney vs Newcastle (Sat 29 Sep - 7pm) Jets to make room for Laybutt Newcastle will shuffle its starting 11 against Sydney FC this weekend to accommodate a couple of key injuries and the arrival of former Socceroo Stephen Laybutt. Striker Joel Griffiths is one injury concern, having sat out Jets training sessions for the past couple of weeks with niggling injuries, while injury-riddled defender Andrew Durante is out with a calf problem. The Jets are likely to call on recent recruit and former international defender Laybutt, while marquee striker Mario Jardel may earn his first start for Newcastle. Central defender Adam Griffiths may move into midfield to allow for Laybutt to make his Hyundai A-League debut in the Jet's back four. Jardel will not come into the side as a straight sway for Joel Griffiths, although van Egmond is not ruling out a starting berth for the experienced Brazilian. Despite the injury worries, van Egmond was happy with his team's form at training since last weekend's draw with Melbourne.

  14. Re: A league - Round 6 - Sydney vs Newcastle (Sat 29 Sep - 7pm) Big names ready for Sydney FC Sydney FC coach Branko Culina finds himself in unfamiliar territory ahead of Saturday night's clash with the Newcastle Jets - his frontline players are all available for selection. Marquee signing Juninho has declared himself fit to play after three weeks on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, while skipper Tony Popovic is also available for selection after overcoming a calf injury. And while delighted to have his big-names back on board for the round-six clash, Culina is now left to face some difficult decisions. When pressed further on the likelihood of Juninho's return to the starting side against the Jets, Culina insisted none of his players were assured a spot - not even his marquee Brazilian.

The longest road trip in world domestic football exists in the Russian Premier League between Zenit St Petersburg and Luch-Energiya Vladivostok at a distance of 6536 km (Source: www.mapcrow.info). - Perth Glory will be hoping to score their first away goal in eight matches when they travel to Wellington. Leading into their Round 6 match, the Glory has not scored a goal in an away match since the 46th minute of their confrontation with Adelaide United in Round 11 of the Hyundai A-League 2006/07 season, meaning that leading into the Phoenix match, Perth Glory has not scored away in 674 minutes (over 11 hours of play). This is by far the longest period without scoring an away goal in the Hyundai A-League, with the next longest time being 504 minutes (set by New Zealand Knights in 2005/06).

Wellington Phoenix supporters might still be awaiting their maiden Hyundai A-League victory at home after drawing with grand final pair Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United and losing narrowly to the Jets. But attendances at Westpac are already some four-times larger than the now-defunct Knights' average crowds last season and lay ahead of Newcastle, Adelaide, the Mariners and Perth in the current pecking order. Phoenix manager Ricki Herbert has the luxury of being able to name an unchanged side for the fourth consecutive week although whether he can resist disrupting recent continuity to squeeze Qantas Socceroos winger Ahmad Elrich into the side remains to be seen. Glory counterpart Ron Smith is still waiting for his first win at any venue this season but bottom-placed Perth has taken a point away from Telstra Dome already this season and gave a strong account of itself in Gosford last weekend. Targetman Mate Dragicevic came a whisker away from opening his Glory goalscoring ledger when he hit the crossbar with a powerful header with the Croatian in contention for a starting recall alongside James Robinson after Smith omitted Jamie Harnwell from his travelling party. The pressure continues to build on Dragicevic with Perth having not scored away from Members Equity Stadium in over 11 hours of play, an away drought some 170 minutes longer than the barren spell the Knights endured in 2005/06. Skipper Simon Colosimo didn't reappear after the break in last week's 1-0 loss to the Mariners after succumbing to hamstring soreness but keeps his place with Billy Celeski given a reprieve and New Zealand international Leo Bertos also recalled to face his hometown club. Phoenix right-back Jeremy Christie will also be meeting his former club for the first time.

The current record is 474 minutes, set by Preston in the 1986 season of the old NSL. The Mariners therefore need to go for 25 minutes into their match against Adelaide to break the all-time record. Incidentally, Adelaide United was the last team to score against Central Coast, in round 21 of the Hyundai A-League 2006/07 season.

Vidmar junior not only faces his sibling when the Mariners travel to Hindmarsh for Sunday's clash but also his hometown crowd but the central defender's mind will be solely focused on extending his side's clean sheet record rather than on Aurelio's problems breaking a winless start at the Reds. Tony will regain his place in central defence after a ban while Andrew Clark is expected to deputise at right-back with Matthew Osman not travelling with the squad because of a torn hamstring. A fifth shutout last weekend against Perth Glory meant Lawrie McKinna's league leader equaled Preston's national league record for most number of matches at the start of the season without conceding a goal as well as matching Sydney FC's Hyundai A-League record stretch from last season. The South Australian connection continues with on-loan striker Damian Mori, the prolific marksman making the shortest 'away' trip of all the Mariners players as he still resides in Adelaide full-time. Mori has scored on each of his two previous visits to Hindmarsh - including a hat-trick for Perth in the inaugural season - and most recently led South Australian Super League side Adelaide City to the local double as player/coach, top-scoring on the way to collecting the league title. However, Greg Owens is uncertain of facing his former employers because of an ongoing back problem. Nik Mrdja and Alex Wilkinson are other big-name absentees for McKinna. Aurelio Vidmar might consider a change of goalkeeper with former No.1 Daniel Beltrame fit after a calf injury but defender Richie Alagich should play despite twisting his knee awkwardly against the Phoenix. Captain Paul Agostino continues to struggle with the corked calf he suffered a fortnight ago against the Jets but is named in Vidmar's squad although Bobby Petta (calf) and Dez Giraldi (thigh) are unavailable.

The Jets commenced their current undefeated streak in the second leg of the Hyundai A-League 2007 Finals Series, and the streak includes the 1-1 draw in the Hyundai A-League 2007 Preliminary Final (a match which went to an unsuccessful penalty shoot-out). The last team to defeat Newcastle was Sydney FC (1-2), in week one of the Hyundai A-League 2007 Finals Series.

  20. Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets Date: Saturday September 29 Kick-off (local time): 7.00pm Venue: Sydney Football Stadium Radio coverage: ABC 1233 (Newcastle) Head-to-head Eight league meetings: Sydney - 2 wins, Jets - 2 wins, 4 draws Previous meeting Sydney 2 Newcastle 3 (Parramatta Stadium, Pre-Season Cup playoffs, August 2007) Past five results Sydney: Loss - Draw - Draw - Loss - Win Newcastle: Draw - Draw - Win - Win - Draw The possible return of Juninho and Stuart Musialik's citing for using abusive language have dominated the build-up to second-placed Newcastle's attempt to find its maiden Hyundai A-League victory at Sydney Football Stadium. Having jumped the gun to report the return of Sydney FC's Brazilian marquee signing from a shoulder injury a fortnight ago reports on Juninho's recall to a side desperate for his creativity and effort have been cagier this week. But all indications from Sydney hint at the 34-year-old, who has been back in virtually full training for two weeks now, making his first appearance since round two against Newcastle on Saturday night. However, the participation of important midfielder Musialik, who scored the goal-of-the-round in the 2-2 draw with Melbourne, remains in some doubt with a Football Federation Australia charge to answer on Thursday night. The uncertainty hanging over the 22-year-old Qantas Olyroo will have coach Gary van Egmond pondering his options with one possibility shifting Adam Griffiths into central midfield and starting debutant Stephen Laybutt in central defence alongside Jade North. Paul Kohler and Jobe Wheelhouse will also come in contention as will former Mariners skipper Noel Spencer who is yet to make his Hyundai A-League bow for the Jets. The unbeaten Jets' previous appearance at SFS was their minor semi-final first leg loss last season since when they have remained unbeaten for seven straight matches. One more would create a new club record. Qantas Socceroos duo Mark Milligan and Alex Brosque found the net for the hosts in that semi-final win with Milligan not considered a serious doubt to retain his place against Newcastle despite spraining his thumb at training on Tuesday. The only decision coach Branko Culina needs to make on the Qantas Olyroos captain is whether to keep him in central defence, a selection dilemma perhaps made easier by nature of Tony Popovic's struggle to shake off a calf niggle. Robbie Middleby will miss up to four weeks because of a thigh strain while unfortunate midfielder Mike Enfield's season is over after knee reconstruction surgery last week with his injury freeing up a berth in Sydney's roster. Culina also adds left-sided defender Nikolas Tsattalios and teenage forward Ben Vidaic to a strong 19-player squad.

Impending stats, facts and trivia: Melbourne Victory will equal the longest sequence of drawn matches (6) at national league level in Australia should they notch a draw against the Roar this weekend. After drawing their first five matches of the Hyundai A-League 2006/07 season, the Victory are one more draw away from equaling the record of consecutive draws set in the old NSL by Brisbane Lions in 1980 and St George in 1990/91. The last match Melbourne did not draw in the Hyundai A-League was the comprehensive 6-0 win over Adelaide United in the Hyundai A-League 2007 Grand Final.

  22. Melbourne Victory v Queensland Roar Date: Friday September 28 Kick-off (local time): 8.00pm Venue: Telstra Dome Radio coverage: SEN1116 (Melbourne) Head-to-head Six league meetings: Melbourne - 3 wins, Queensland - 2 wins, 1 draw Previous meeting Melbourne 1 Queensland 2 (Telstra Dome, Hyundai A-League round 20, January 2007) Past five results Melbourne: Draw - Draw - Draw - Draw - Draw Queensland: Draw - Draw - Loss - Win - Loss Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick is expected to go on the offensive in search of the Victory's first goals at Telstra Dome this season when interstate visitor Queensland Roar arrives for Friday night's encounter. The Victorians, in the midst of an unprecedented run of five straight Hyundai A-League draws, still count their grand final thumping of Adelaide United in February as their last competitive win. But Merrick looks set to ratchet up his forward intensity after an unfamiliar barren start by keeping patience with on loan Brazilian Leandro alongside Archie Thompson and even possibly recalling Daniel Allsopp after he fractured two ribs against the Mariners. Melbourne was also noticeably more fluent going forward after the arrival of international Carlos Hernandez at half-time in last week's draw with the Jets while Leandro supplied the inch-perfect cross for Thompson to begin the Victory's revival. Defensively Merrick must again reshuffle after Matthew Kemp was ruled out because of tightness in his groin while Ljubo Milicevic is still awaiting his first taste of playing at the Telstra Dome after lasting only 32 minutes of Melbourne's season opener at Westpac Stadium before succumbing to a knee injury. Captain Kevin Muscat is named in a 17-man squad despite a reported knee problem but Merrick still drafts in Kaz Patafta and Daniel Vasilevski as cover. The Roar was one of the three teams (Adelaide and Newcastle were the others) which beat Melbourne at the Dome last season when Dario Vidosic scored an injury time winner to keep Queensland in the hunt for a finals place. Frank Farina, who names the same 15-man squad, hinted at changes to his forward structure earlier this week after deploying Ante Milicic, Simon Lynch, Reinaldo and Marcinho to little effect in last Saturday's defeat to Sydney FC Of the quartet only Reinaldo has found the net this season. Both Milicic and Lynch scored freely in pre-season but the Scotsman, who started his Hyundai A-League career with such a bang, hasn't now scored in the league for over a year. Farina might be unable to resist recalling Melbournian Massimo Murdocca to the starting side while fellow Victorian Sasa Ognenovski, an emergency centre forward last week, looks set to return in defence. More width looks like being provided by Farina deploying wing-backs with playmaker Marcinho also likely to be asked to play wider. Only six of the Brazilian's 25 efforts on goal this season have hit the target.

Sydney have a top record against the Roar and have only lost on the one occasion. These teams have played 5 draws and have drawn three of the past five games. Having said that, Sydney are not playing as well as they have been in the past two seasons, although their form could easily turn around as they are a quality outfit. SHOTS PER GOAL

Queensland lead the league in shots on goal, but much like last season they do not convert enough. They have enough potency to trouble the opposition keeper every time they go forward, but they average a goal every 18 shots or so which is not good enough. At home they average a goal every 27 shots do it is always hope they score with Queensland. Sydney are fairing much worse at a goal every 24 shots overall and no goals away from home yet. Sydney vulnerable in the first 15 minutes of this game.

    CURRENT ODDS (Sportingbet) QUEENSLAND $2.25

    SYDNEY $3.00

    DRAW $3.25

Sydney have Popovic and Middleby out injured, and Juninho is still a week or two away which does not auger well for the away side. Last weekend Wellington made Sydney look very ordinary. Queensland welcome back Murdocca who provides plenty of drive in the engine room and the Roar at almost full strength. Tiatto, Moore and Ogenovski are rocks down back and combined with Seo and McKay in midfield who provide Heinald0 with plenty of opportunity should be able to win the day. Queensland on form are very good odds for mine against a team who is not traveling so well.

It is worth noting Sydney’s overall dominance of Queensland in the A League, and a draw is very much on the cards. I am prepared to take the home team for a win because I am basing it on recent form, but do not count out another draw.

    Queensland to WIN @ $2-25

    Adelaide/Queensland WIN Double @ $5.95
