In terms of W-D-L record, Kosmina's record was the most impressive in the first two Hyundai A-League seasons (W23-D10-L16), having led Adelaide United to top two placings on the 2005/06 and 2006/07 ladders. Meanwhile, Central Coast striker Adam Kwasnik is set to make his 50th Hyundai A-League appearance.

The Korean was an inaugural Queensland Roar signing and becomes his first player to notch up 50 matches for the Roar. Meanwhile, Perth's Jamie Harnwell is also due for his 50th Hyundai A-League appearance, having missed just two matches for the Glory since the club's first Hyundai A-League match in August 2005.

  3. Bottom side Perth Glory faces another difficult challenge this Saturday when it travels to Brisbane to meet reinvigorated Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium. Coming so soon after that energy-sapping 2-1 defeat at Telstra Dome, Ron Smith's men must quickly regroup in preparation for a Queensland side which has turned its season around over the past three weeks. Frank Farina's much-discussed tactic of flanking targetman Reinaldo with Michael Zullo and Robbie Kruse continues to reward the former Qantas Socceroos boss with the teenagers again combining for the Roar's first minute opener in the 1-1 draw with Newcastle. Zullo's directness and Kruse's tenacity created that goal while Farina will be further pleased by both youngsters lasting the entire 90 minutes for the first time this season. Kruse has now scored twice in three games with Zullo providing a club-leading two assists and a goal in that same period, however, doubts have been hovering over Reinaldo who picked up a knee injury against the Jets and sat out training earlier in the week. The Brazilian striker is named in Farina's squad but midfielder Matt McKay misses out after rolling an ankle at training, opening the way for the return of Danny Tiatto from suspension. Massimo Murdocca is also promoted at the expense of Stuart McLaren. The Roar boss must decide between keeping 50-gamer Hyuk-Su Seo in midfield alongside Tiatto or handing youngster Mitch Nichols his first start of the Hyundai A-League campaign while Murdocca is a further option. Veteran striker Ante Milicic is drafted in as cover for Reinaldo after sitting out three weeks with a groin problem while defender Andrew Packer is fit to return at full-back after a torn calf and will put pressure on incumbents Ben Griffin and Josh McCloughan. Although the results might not indicate so, Smith has seen enough from his side over the past fortnight to suggest Perth can make up ground on seventh-placed Wellington Phoenix and sixth-placed Sydney FC. The diligence of full-back Jimmy Downey, who finished the game against Melbourne on the right-flank, and the set pieces from midfielder Mitchell Prentice have caught the eye while Jamie Harnwell's persistence was rewarded with his third goal in his past four league starts. Harnwell, another in line for his 50th Hyundai A-League game, started that scoring run when he was originally restored to the starting line-up against Queensland in the fourth round and is now the club's leading marksman. Smith calls up midfielders Billy Celeski, David Micevski and Leo Bertos as well as former Queensland star Jordan Simpson but chooses to omit Jordan's brother Tyler Simpson, another ex-Roar player, and Nick Rizzo (foot).

  4. Re: A League Round 10 - Melbourne v Newcastle (Fri 25 Oct - 8:00pm) Melbourne 0 Newcastle 2 (A Griffiths8, J Griffiths 88) Crowd: 27,123 Gary Van Egmond has continued his unbeaten record against Hyundai A-League champion Melbourne, guiding his Jets to a 2-0 win over a ten-man Victory outfit in a cracking match at Telstra Dome. Newcastle scored the early goal thanks to Adam Griffiths' eighth-minute header and then absorbed 81 minutes of pressure, before twin brother Joel sealed it in the 88th minute. They now move to outright second on the table, while Van Egmond has now led the Jets into battle four times against Melbourne for three wins and a draw. Melbourne's second loss of the season will be especially bitter considering the home side dominated the match, and in particular the second half. Steve Pantelidis' red card proved a decisive moment as the home side went the final 24 minutes a man down, and were unable to get back into the match. Van Egmond was delighted with the commitment and intelligence his players showed in the victory. Newcastle's night began badly when influential midfielder Stuart Musialik was indisposed with a stomach virus after the warm-up and was replaced by Noel Spencer. Matt Thompson then went in Matthew Breeze's book for a strong challenge on Carlos Hernandez in just the second minute. The resultant free kick from Joe Keenan caused considerable panic in the Jets defence, who went on the scramble clear the ball from inside their own box at least five times in the next few minutes as Melbourne pressured for an early goal. But instead it was Newcastle who got the opener with its first chance of the night. Kevin Muscat had given away the free kick just outside the box and Adam D'Apuzzo's free kick found Adam Griffiths unmarked in the box, leaving Michael Theoklitos no chance to save the header. It was the second time this season that Griffiths had scored an early goal against the Hyundai A-League champions having scored in the fourth minute of their encounter in Newcastle five weeks ago. Melbourne looked for a quick response, with Matthew Kemp prompting a save from Ante Covic and Hernandez shooting way over after a good combination with Archie Thompson while the Jets were using the counter-attack to great effect. Both Mark Bridge and Joel Griffiths made surging runs into the box, only for the Victory defence to cover. The frenetic early pace died down as the half wore on and the best Melbourne chances now came from set pieces and from down the right-hand side. Thompson had the best of them, having met Kemp's corner well with a solid header but Covic and Adam Griffiths stopped the ball going in. For the Jets, Denni was becoming more influential as the pace dropped and twice troubled Theoklitos, but couldn't extend the visitors' advantage before half time. Much more so than in the first half, the Jets were keen to sit on their lead in the second 45 minutes, while Melbourne tried to break them down, usually from the set piece. The Victory had two claims for penalties waved away by Matthew Breeze in the space of a few minutes and were beginning to look frustrated. In a decisive blow to the home side's chances of a comeback, the Victory went down to ten men on 66 minutes when Pantelidis elbowed Joel Griffiths, giving Breeze little option but to send the defender off in his 50th game. Ernie Merrick made an immediate switch, with Sebastian Ryall on for Grant Brebner, while Leandro Love replaced Allsopp in a bid to find an equaliser. The Brazilian had an immediate effect, heading wide from a Keenan cross on 74 minutes and smashing the ball over the top from just outside the box five minutes later. Another substitute, Adrian Caceres, rifled the ball straight at Covic but the Jets keeper just held on to preserve the lead. The result was settled after a Rody Vargas error gave the ball to Bridge. He set strike partner Joel Griffiths through, and the cool finish easily beat Theoklitos. Merrick said that he felt his team had played good enough football, but the goals just didn't come.

Leading into their home clash against Newcastle, a total of 992,784 spectators have attended a match featuring Melbourne Victory (54 matches), meaning that the 7,216th attendee on Friday will be number 1,000,000. In their 27 home matches so far, Melbourne's aggregate crowd is 659,554. Meanwhile, Victory defender Steve Pantelidis is expected to make his 50th Hyundai A-League appearance in this match.

  6. Melbourne Victory v Newcastle Jets Date: Friday October 26 Kick-off (local time): 8.00pm Venue: Telstra Dome Radio coverage: SEN1116 (Melbourne), ABC 1233 (Newcastle) One look at the latest Hyundai A-League table tells you there's very little to choose between tonight's opponents Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets this season. They have identical win-draw-loss records after nine rounds (three wins, five draws and one loss) while when the sides met a month ago, the Jets scored twice in the first-half and the Victory twice in the second to earn a 2-2 draw. Archie Thompson, without the omnipotent presence of strike partner Daniel Allsopp because of fractured ribs, found the net for the first time this season in the teams' previous meeting and has scored three more times since to join four other players at the head of the goalscoring charts. The Qantas Socceroos striker, who turned 29 this week, also enjoyed a dazzling opening half-hour in the 2-1 win over Perth last week and was eventually awarded Melbourne's first goal after it was originally given to Rodrigo Vargas. Newcastle's Adam Griffiths and Stuart Musialik were the Jets' heroes in a rampaging first-half five weeks ago with both recalled from thigh and hamstring injuries although central defender Stephen Laybutt is left out of Gary van Egmond's provisional squad. Laybutt, whose debut was delayed at the start of the season, has been booked in each of his three past games and, if selected, must be watchful of a fourth caution in five games and ensuing one-match suspension. Melbourne starters Steve Pantelidis, who will be making his 50th Hyundai A-League appearance, Joe Keenan and recalled captain Kevin Muscat all find themselves in the same situation. Muscat failed a fitness test before last week's game but returns after a fortnight absence spent battling wrist, knee and thigh injuries with teenager Kaz Patafta the unlucky one dropping out. However, Ljubo Milicevic, back in training after a club-induced suspension, continues to rest a knee complaint with Daniel Piorkowski a long-term absentee with a shoulder injury. For Newcastle, Mario Jardel injured his back in training and misses out while teenage striker James Holland is replaced by Jobe Wheelhouse.

  8. Re: Bad Beat or Bad Play??? Thanx for the feedback guys and will be quite helpful :ok Probably weren't calling stations as such GAF, more loose weak players perhaps...Meant they called pre flop a lot and then generally folded to a raise after the flop. In hindsight I probably should have just called his reraise on the river, however, some of the hands these guys were going all the way with were quite absurd...Some would keep calling to the end with only a pair. I never imagined he had a full house and that's where I misjudged it...Got the flush draw for very little and then when I hit I thought I had the best hand over trips. Good thing about Poker is quite often you learn more when you lose a hand than when you win a hand :dude Thanx for the input everyone as your valued thoughts are much appreciated!

  9. Re: A-League Round 9 - Sydney vs Adelaide (Saturday Oct 20th)

    What is Rugby?
Its a game where you you throw the ball backwards Ads, and you have this thing called a scrum where you have to get as many players as possible to get their head up as many players arses as possible, perhaps thats where the Union comes from, not sure...Maybe that's why England is so good at it and the Aussies did no good, cos that ain't our thing. :) It is known as "Catch me Fark me" over here. :dude
  10. Table was mainly full of calling stations who folded to most raises. I had built up my chips by seeing cheap flops and outplaying after the flop when I hit the best hand. I had AQ suited here and elected to call and see what the flop contained. Didn't hit on the flop but tried to steal the pot after the flop as it had been working previously as people gave me respect for a good hand as I wasn't playing too many pots, and when I did go all the way I had fairly good hands. After the turn I had a flush draw and got free look at the river where I hit my A high spades flush. Put him on trip 6's but didn't realise when the 4 of spades made my flush, it also made his full house and in the process gave him all my chips. Should I have raised pre flop to most likely win $0-75, or was the way I played the hand ok and just unlucky? Some feedback would be greatly appreciated... Michael Bridges ?:eek:eek If it's the Michael Bridges, he's probably the best striker in the A-League right now, had no idea he went over there :loon
Nice to see your welcome presence in the A League thread Mr Jeffers. :ok Heard Bridges on tv and this is what he said... 13. Re: A-League Round 9 - Sydney vs Adelaide (Saturday Oct 20th) English striker Bridges signs on loan Sydney FC has signed former English Premier League striker Michael Bridges on loan from Hull City for the rest of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 Season.Bridges made his name in England's top flight, first with Sunderland and then, following a $12m transfer, with Leeds United, for whom he notched 19 Premier League goals in his debut season as the Elland Road side ran third and reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals. Twenty-nine-year-old Bridges put pen to paper on his Sydney FC contract after meeting his new teammates at Macquarie University Sports Fields and undergoing a medical examination. "I've always wanted to play abroad. It's been a childhood ambition and getting the opportunity to come out here is second to none, one that I couldn't turn down," said Bridges. "My old mates Harry Kewell and Dwight Yorke told me that I should jump at the chance to get over here and experience the A-League. "I'm looking forward to bringing a bit of experience from playing in the Premiership to help the team and get them goals. Hopefully, I can feed off a few of the unique passes that Juninho has in his locker." Bridges will be unavailable for Sydney FC's Hyundai A-League 2007/08 home game against Adelaide United at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday as he awaits visa clearance but the club expects the England Under-21 international will be ready for the Central Coast Mariners match at the same venue on October 28. Sydney FC has signed Bridges as a replacement for long-term casualty Michael Enfield, who has been ruled out for several months after sustaining a serious knee injury.

  15. Re: A-League Round 9 - Sydney vs Adelaide (Saturday Oct 20th) High-profile signings Paul Agostino and Michael Bridges will not play in Saturday's blockbuster at Sydney Football Stadium while the fitness of Brazilian pair Juninho and Patrick has also generated plenty of newspaper space over the past week. Bridges, a talented striker, only touched down in Australia on Wednesday and proved his fitness just 24 hours later by passing the club's medical and taking part in Sydney's Thursday morning training session. However, the 29-year-old will not have his sporting visa approved in time to take on Adelaide so must wait until the round 10 meeting with the Central Coast Mariners. Reports this week have suggested Patrick may need season-ending knee surgery while the fitness of Juninho after a shoulder problem remains uncertain but happily for the Sydney faithful both are named in Branko Culina's 17-man squad. Also there is reigning player-of-the-year Robbie Middleby after missing the past month with a torn thigh and Qantas Olyroos pair Mark Milligan and Adam Casey although the third member of Sydney's representative trio Ruben Zadkovich serves a one-match suspension. For Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar, the ongoing absence of Agostino must be a source of immense frustration. The club's marquee signing arrived in Adelaide with a broken foot and has since been dogged by a niggling calf tear meaning he's started just two games so far. Bruce Djite is also warming the sidelines because of ankle ligament damage so Vidmar must decide whether to stick with Dez Giraldi, who started upfront in last week's 4-1 demolition of Melbourne Victory, or play the returning Nathan Burns further forward with Qantas Olyroos team-mate Kristian Sarkies in midfield. It would be harsh, though, to leave out Giraldi or left-sided midfielder Lucas Pantelis, whose wonderful strike into the top corner to seal the points against the Victory capped a memorable display. This match-up always provides plenty of intensity but in terms of disciplinary records, Sydney and Adelaide are the most reformed teams of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season. Having been the teams with the worst yellow and red card records in the first two seasons (Adelaide 98 yellows and five reds, Sydney 94 yellows and eight reds), so far this year Adelaide owns the best record (11 yellows) and Sydney the fourth-best (19 yellows and one red). The Reds are yet to win at the Sydney Football Stadium in five league attempts.

This match brings together the two teams with the worst total yellow and red card records in the first two Hyundai A-League seasons (Adelaide 98 yellows/5 reds; Sydney 94 yellows/8 reds in total); however this season has been different for both teams, Adelaide with the best record (11 yellows/0 reds) and Sydney with the fourth best (19 yellows/1 red) so far. As an indication of their improved record this season, just one yellow was issued in the Round 2 Sydney-Adelaide match (Bobby Petta), a stark contrast to 43 yellows (18 to Sydney, 25 to Adelaide) issued in their previous eight Hyundai A-League encounters.

  17. Re: A-League Round 9 - Newcastle vs Queensland (Friday Oct 19th) Newcastle Jets 1 (Joel Griffiths 47) Queensland Roar 1 (Robbie Kruse 1) Crowd 12,326 at Energy Australian Stadium, Newcastle. The Newcastle Jets have blown a chance to move to the top of the Hyundai A-League table after a dramatic 1-1 draw against the Queensland Roar in a riveting round-nine match at Energy Australia Stadium on Friday night. The Jets found themselves a goal down after Queensland's teenage striker Robbie Kruse scored in the first minute of play. Joel Griffiths leveled the scores with a penalty just after half-time before Newcastle keeper Ante Covic saved a Craig Moore penalty in the 65th minute. The Jets had a plethora of chances to snare the winner but were unable to convert and now sit equal with the Central Coast Mariners on the table with the rest of the weekend's fixtures still to play. Newcastle's Australian Under 23s representative Mark Bridge tormented the Roar defence in a stellar man-of-the-match performance while 18-year-old livewire midfielder Michael Zullo had another outstanding game for the Roar, but earned a black mark for having a hand in giving the Jets the equalizer. Queensland got the ideal start after Zullo broke down the left flank before cutting back inside and passing to Robbie Kruse on the edge of the area. The 19-year-old had his first shot blocked but managed to send his second strike past Ante Covic for the opening goal to stun the 12,326-strong home crowd. The Jets got their first decent chance on goal in the 12th minute when striker Joel Griffiths broke clear and found Denni in the goal mouth only for Roar keeper Liam Reddy to pull off a gutsy save off the bootlaces of the Brazilian import. Jets youngster James Holland blew a golden opportunity just after the 20 minute mark when he sprayed his shot over the bar from 12 yards out after a nice pass from Bridge found him unmarked in the box. The Jets went agonisingly close in the 29th minute when Bridge again found space down the left side before squaring to Troy Hearfield, whose diving header from point-blank range was instinctively saved by Reddy throwing out his right boot. Griffiths spurned another fantastic chance for the home side just before half-time when he spooned a bouncing volley just wide of the post after Bridge had again put him in behind the Roar defence with a lovely chipped pass. The Jets eventually got the equaliser when Hearfield was brought down in the area by Zullo and Hyuk-Su Seo in the first attacking raid of the second half. Referee Mark Shield had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Griffiths stepped up to slot home a well stuck penalty. Queensland skipper Craig Moore had a chance to put his side back in front from the penalty spot in the 65th minute when Jets defender Stephen Laybutt brought down Kruse in the penalty area after an excellent long ball from Roar midfielder Hyuk-Su Seo. But Covic produced a fine diving save to his left to deny the former Socceroo skipper. Queensland striker Reinaldo went within inches of breaking the deadlock the 75th minute when he leapt high to meet Matthew McKay's swinging free-kick from the left wing only to see his header brush outside the right post. Down the other end, Hearfield put his header just over the bar from another pin-point Bridge cross, Griffiths went close with a long-range effort in the 88th minute before a desperate diving challenge from Roar defender Sasa Ognenovski denied Hearfield the winner in injury time.

The home team has never won an encounter when these two teams have met before. It is either a draw or an away win. Something to ponder when assessing tonight's game.

  20. Re: A-League Round 9 - Newcastle vs Queensland (Friday Oct 19th) Tiatto out for the Roar Liam Reddy says while Queensland Roar will miss the influence of midfield maestro Danny Tiatto in tonight’s clash with the Newcastle Jets, the strength in numbers of this season’s squad can comfortably cope with the loss of the former Socceroo. Tiatto’s absence through suspension sees Stuart McLaren drafted into the squad and the Roar ‘keeper points to the players who didn’t make the 15-man travelling party to illustrate the potency of the group that Frank Farina has assembled this term. Reddy, who has been in top form all season, said that the squad recognises tonight’s encounter with the Jets presents the perfect opportunity to get amongst the leaders and says the impetus of back-to-back wins will gather even more pace with a positive result. As a former Jet, this match perhaps means a little more to the Roar ‘keeper and he says the taste of victory at EnergyAustralia Stadium will be a little sweeter, especially as he’s expecting a hostile reception from the home fans.

  21. Re: A-League Round 9 - Newcastle vs Queensland (Friday Oct 19th) Jets can top the table with a win tonight! A place in the Newcastle Jets history books is on the line this weekend as the team faces a red-hot Queensland Roar side at EnergyAustralia Stadium tonight. The Jets have never topped the Hyundai A-League table, but have the chance to do just that if they can claim the points in Round 9. Newcastle sits just one point behind the first-placed Central Coast Mariners, but could also drop as low as fifth if the Jets lose and other results don’t go their way. Needless to say, there is a lot at stake this weekend. Gary Van Egmond was the first to stress this point today stating exactly what is at stake, and how much of a threat the Roar poses. In their second straight home game, the Jets are hoping to improve on their impressive recent record at EnergyAustralia Stadium. Having lost only the once under the guidance of Van Egmond, the Jets have turned their turf into something of a fortress over the past few months. The Jets also showed real signs of coming together as a unit last weekend, and probably should have scored more as they opened the Wellington Phoenix up on numerous occasions with some slick passing. Van Egmond is hoping his team can build on the back of that performance and convert possession into goals against Queensland. In positive news, Adam Griffiths may return to the squad after being ruled out last week through injury. The only other injury concern was Andrew Durante, who has also been training well this week. Stuart Musialik will remain in the stands as he returns from Beirut early Friday morning.
