Only 3 games played and averages are still being worked out. Adelaide managing plenty of shots away from home which is better result than last season. They score a goal around every 9 shots so if they keep up their average away shot tally of 13 then they should get one goal at least, or maybe two. The Jets have around 15 shots on average at home and if they can maintain that then they too should also score a goal. May have the makings of another 1-1 draw.

First meeting was a 1-1 draw, then three meetings of these teams were all won by the away side, then next three meetings all won by the home side, and another 1-1 draw before pre season 4-1 win by Adelaide. Adelaide have good record against the Jets winning five from nine and it is worth noting that 5 of the last 7 games have ended over 2.5 goals. Whenever these sides have a draw it has always ended in 1-1. It is also worth noting that Adelaide has never failed to score in a game against the Jets, and the home side has only failed to score in one game against Adelaide.

Four consecutive scoreless draws by the same team has never occurred before at national league level in Australia (over 6000 matches). A further indication of the rarity of such an event is that it has only occurred four times in the top tier of English football league (over 44,000 matches since 1888)

  5. Glory v Queensland Roar Date: Sunday September 16 Kick-off (local time): 5.00pm (3pm AEST) Venue: Members Equity Stadium Radio coverage: 6PR 882AM - http://www.mytalk.com.au/NewDesign/Pages/S_Talk_6PR.aspx SportFM http://www.905.com.au/ Head-to-head Six league meetings: Queensland - 4 wins, Perth - 1 win, 3 draws Previous meeting Queensland 1 Perth 0 (Suncorp Stadium, Hyundai A-League round 15, December 2006) Past five results Perth: Win - Loss - Draw - Draw - Draw Queensland: Loss - Win - Draw - Draw - Loss Perth Glory supporters are still awaiting their first sighting of a goal of any kind this season after watching Ron Smith's side start the year with an unlikely three straight goalless draws - two at Members Equity Stadium. In over 6000 matches at national league level in Australia, four consecutive scoreless draws by the same team has never before occurred while a further indication of the rarity of such an event is that it has only happened four times in the history of English football league's top tier. After a promising pre-season, fledgling strike pairing Mate Dragicevic and Nikita Rukavytsya have failed to find their brightest form over the opening three rounds with Smith eyeing possible changes following Englishman James Robinson's recovery from a thigh strain. Former captain Jamie Harnwell is another option upfront against Queensland this Sunday, a side the Glory has not beaten in the league for two years when a Bobby Despotovski brace helped the hosts to a 2-1 win. Queensland quartet Josh McCloughan, Massimo Murdocca, Matt McKay and Hyuk-Su Seo are the sole survivors from ex-Roar coach Miron Bleiberg's side which last dropped points against Perth in 2005. However, Murdocca will not play any part this weekend after losing his fitness battle with a quad strain while McCloughan's place in central defence will come under pressure from fit-again Sasa Ognenovski. Ognenovski has missed the past two weeks after rolling both ankles before the match with Newcastle but is included in the travelling party although Chris Grossman, who has recovered from an infected toe, and Stuart McLaren, who returns from a one-match ban, are not. For Perth, only Harnwell, Jamie Coyne and midfield duo Simon Colosimo and Billy Celeski remain from former Perth coach Steve McMahon's side that day with Colosimo and Celeski returning to Smith's squad after national team commitments. Celeski, who only resumed his Hyundai A-League career in the off season after a year playing state football in Victoria, has been Perth's standout of late and impressed on his return to the Qantas Olyroos fold on Wednesday. Defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley, midfielder David Micevski and goalkeeper Tando Velaphi also return from the under-23s. Velaphi made one appearance for Queensland in round 20 last season after Liam Reddy was suspended and Tom Willis sidelined with a dislocated shoulder.

  6. Melbourne Victory v Central Coast Mariners Date: Sunday September 16 Kick-off (local time): 5.00pm Venue: Telstra Dome Radio coverage: SEN1116 (Melbourne) http://www.sen.com.au/ Click "Listen Live" Head-to-head Six league meetings: Melbourne - 3 wins, Mariners - 2 wins, 1 draw Previous meeting Central Coast 1 Melbourne 2 (Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium, Hyundai A-League round 18, December 2006) Past five results Melbourne: Loss - Loss - Draw - Draw - Draw Central Coast: Loss - Loss - Win - Win - Win The defending Hyundai A-League champion welcomes the Central Coast Mariners to Telstra Dome still searching for its first competitive win of the 2007/08 season after four losses and four draws in eight outings this term. The manner in which Melbourne Victory has began the defence of its crown contrasts with the runaway opening of last season when coach-of-the-year Ernie Merrick guided his side to seven consecutive victories and a nine-point gap at the top of the table. In addition to lying fourth, six points behind this year's early pacesetters, Merrick has the added incentive of protecting that league record when his side attempts to end the Central Coast's 100 per cent start to the season on Sunday. Both sides welcome key players back from national team duty with Dean Heffernan and Archie Thompson, who started the Qantas Socceroos 1-0 defeat to Argentina on Tuesday night, both primed to start. Heffernan might match-up against Australian under-20 international Sebastian Ryall who could continue at right-back in Englishman Joe Keenan's absence with Matthew Kemp at left-back. Keenan, who missed last week's 1-1 draw with Adelaide United, is named in an extended squad but faces a late fitness test on his knee problem with Ljubo Milicevic also sidelined with a knee injury although Steve Pantelidis does return to the first team squad after a corked thigh. Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna can call upon first choice goalkeeper Danny Vukovic after his No.1 kept successive clean sheets for the Qantas Olyroos in their double-header against North Korea and Lebanon. Backup custodian Matthew Trott was among the best performers in the Mariners' 1-0 victory last Thursday but McKinna conceded earlier this week that Trott played through the pain barrier in Brisbane because of a groin strain. The third round was also an eventful one for Victory defender Rodrigo Vargas who headed Melbourne into the lead before conceding the penalty which Travis Dodd converted to steal a point. Vargas was given his marching orders along with captain Kevin Muscat, who will play his 450th top flight match, the last time these sides met at Telstra Dome before a late strike from Daniel Allsopp levelled the scores. Mariners midfielder Greg Owens isn't named in the squad after failing to make the trip to Queensland because of a hamstring complaint.

  7. Newcastle Jets v Adelaide United Date: Saturday September 15 Kick-off (local time): 7.00pm Venue: EnergyAustralia Stadium Web Radio coverage: ABC 1233 Newcastle http://www.abc.net.au/newcastle/football/default.htm Head-to-head Seven league meetings: Adelaide - 4 wins, Jets - 2 wins, 1 draw Previous meeting Adelaide 4 Newcastle 1 (Hindmarsh Stadium, Pre-Season Cup round three, July 2007) Past five results Newcastle: Win - Draw - Draw - Draw - Win Adelaide: Win - Win - Draw - Draw - Draw Newcastle coach Gary van Egmond has named Mario Jardel in the Jets squad for the first time with the Brazilian marquee player due to be unleashed at some point against Adelaide United on Saturday night. Jardel has been steadily building fitness over the past month but appears ready for his Hyundai A-League debut, his timing impeccable with the Jets still to score a goal from open play this season. Qantas Olyroos striker Mark Bridge, who along with defender Adam Griffiths was sent off when these sides previously met in the Pre-Season Cup in late July, also returns to the fold after playing 90 minutes against Lebanon in midweek. However, Argentine Jorge Drovandi remains out of favour. The left winger hasn't featured at all in the past two games and has played just 28 minutes in the league since his close season arrival from South America. Still Adelaide's task of containing Jardel, Bridge and Joel Griffiths - not to mention the quick-witted Denni who operates in behind the strikers - is made all the more challenging following club captain Michael Valkanis' season-ending knee ligament injury. Left wing-back Cassio was substituted in the second-half against Melbourne last week after hurting his hip in a clash with Victory skipper Kevin Muscat but keep his berth in the squad with Shaun Ontong called in as backup. The participation of United striker Nathan Burns, the outstanding player of the opening three Hyundai A-League rounds, must be under some doubt after he withdrew from the Qantas Olyroos midweek squad citing a quad strain. His absence might open the door for Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar to introduce potentially the most explosive forward pairing in the league with Bruce Djite available after under-23s duty to partner new captain Paul Agostino in a lively-looking frontline. Kristian Sarkies' availability after a quad injury - he came through 85 minutes for the Qantas Olyroos against Lebanon - adds to Vidmar's selection dilemmas with the former Melbourne midfielder still awaiting his Adelaide league debut. But Dutchman Bobby Petta hasn't managed to shake off a calf problem after pulling up in training last Thursday and missing the clash with Melbourne. For the Jets, Stuart Musialik makes his return after representing the Qantas Olyroos while Andrew Durante is back from an ankle knock but new short-term signing Stephen Laybutt isn't deemed quite ready to make his Hyundai A-League.

  8. Re: A League Round 4 - Sydney v Wellington (Frid 14th Sep - 8pm) Only watched a replay of this game due to the mighty Magpies playing West Coast in AFL semi-final last night. Sydney did as expected and scored an early goal, but then Wellington quickly replied and then a penalty put them a goal up before half time. Sydney didn't have too many chances Home side had 12 shots for the game which is their average, but Wellington doubled their usual away shot average of 4 to have 8 shots at goal and they scored two. Not sure what is up with Sydney this season but they are steadily playing poorer football each week. Wellington are playing very solid stuff and deserved their win last night. They have been impressive in their first season in the A League.

  9. Re: A League Round 4 - Sydney v Wellington (Frid 14th Sep - 8pm) Phoenix claim first win Sydney FC 1 - 2 Wellington Phoenix 6m Casey 6 (SC) 8m Felipe (WP) 28m Daniel (WP) The Wellington Phoenix have put up a gutsy second-half defensive display to hold on for a 2-1 upset victory over Sydney FC at Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night. It was a tense night in Sydney for a game that brought of chances, yet Sydney could not match Wellington's disciplined shape all over the park. It was an action packed first half with plenty of end to end football and not to mention three goals, the total shot count was 5-4 in favor of Sydney. The win brings Wellington off the bottom of the Hyundai A-League table and into a new era for New Zealand football. Adam Casey got the home side off to the best possible start after only six minutes, receiving a long ball on the edge of the 18-yard box from Ufuk Talay. With only one defender to beat, Casey comfortably slotted home the first goal of his Hyundai A-League career. Felipe had the Wellington reply barely 90 seconds later, first beating Socceroo Mark Milligan, before a 20 metre weaving run through the Sydney defence and a decisive strike past FC goalkeeper Clint Bolton. The goal from the Brazilian import was Wellington's first outside their New Zealand home. The game was set-up to be a high-drama affair in the 27th minute when Sydney FC defender Ruben Zadkovic forced Phoenix striker Daniel off the ball in the Sydney penalty area, and referee Matthew Breeze had no choice but to point to the spot. After Wellington's first attempt at a penalty kick was disallowed due to encroachment, Daniel made his mark on the back of the net with his second attempt giving the visitors their second for the evening. Sydney threw all there fire-power up front consistently throughout the second half but could not break down the sturdy Wellington defensive line. Substitute Alex Brosque came out firing in the 61st minute with Sydney's best chance to equalise after hitting the right woodwork from directly in front of goals, much to the frustration of the vocal Sydney crowd. Robbie Middleby had a goal all but wrapped up with ten minutes to play, negotiating his way down the left flank, and forcing Wellington goalkeeper Glen Moss off his line. But the keeper was up to the task and brilliantly shut down the shot from Middleby with his feet. Tempers flared in the 85th minute with a clumsy challenge from David Zdrilic inviting a crowd of Phoenix retaliation, leaving referee Matthew Breeze with his hands full, Phoenix keeper Moss earning a caution for his involvement in the melee. Zdrilic had a last ditch effort for Sydney FC in the dying seconds, but his effort sailed only inches over the crossbar. Crowd 11,491

  10. Re: A League Round 4 - Sydney v Wellington (Frid 14th Sep - 8pm) Sydney vs Wellington I don't have much time for a review but I feel this game will be an easy win for the home side. With Clint Bolton, Ruben Zadkovich, Alex Brosque, Mark Milligan back from Australia duty, and the inclusion of emerging player Adam Biddle, Sydney will be too strong here. There is also a chance Juninho will play too. Wellington have been very good defensively this season and they are always pretty competitive but it is hard to see them even scoring tonight against the Sydney defence at home. Shots Per Goal

Sydney have more shots overall and they have plenty of shots at home while Wellington do not have many away from home. Couple that with Sydney’s defence it is going to be a tough ask for Wellington.

Sydney a chance to score early at home, while Wellington have already conceded goals early on two occasions. Sydney has played Adelaide and Central Coast, and an away game to Perth where they had a scoreless draw.

Sydney for me and I think they will score in the first half and go on to win the game.

Additionally, Bolton is also due for his 350th appearance at national league level in Australia, having already made exactly 300 appearances in the old NSL (with Brisbane Strikers, Sydney Olympic and Parramatta Power).

  16. Sydney FC v Wellington Phoenix Date: Friday September 14 Kick-off (local time): 8.00pm Venue: Sydney Football Stadium Head-to-head First league meeting Previous meeting Wellington 3 Sydney 0 (Westpac Stadium, Pre-Season Cup round two, July 2007) Past five results Sydney: Loss - Win - Loss - Draw - Draw Wellington: Win - Draw - Draw - Loss - Loss It's been variously quoted as four, six and eight weeks but Brazilian maestro Juninho's shoulder injury might have recovered enough for the former World Cup winner to take the field for Sydney FC in its home meeting with Wellington Phoenix on Friday night. With neither side tasting victory so far this season, Sydney coach Branko Culina will be delighted to name his marquee signing in the side after just one week on the sidelines, especially after struggling to put together a squad of players for last weekend's trip to Perth. Equally importantly, however, will be the return of Mark Milligan who headed the winner for the Qantas Olyroos last Saturday against North Korea and again shone in midweek against Lebanon. The Qantas Olyroos captain played in central defence for the under-23s but Culina will be tempted to keep Milligan in midfield and stick with the back three of Iain Fyfe, Mark Rudan and Tony Popovic which kept the Glory at bay last Sunday. The 22-year-old's battle with Felipe, Wellington's enigmatic Brazilian who made his first start last week in the narrow loss to the Jets, is an intriguing one with the Phoenix attacking midfielder showing his repertoire of flicks and tricks against Newcastle. Compatriot Daniel should also keep his place in midfield but team-mate Cleberson fails to return to the squad after missing the third round clash with Steven O'Dor likely to retain the centre back berth in the wake of a more assured display last weekend. FC striker Patrick completes the South American theme, the burly forward vying to keep his place upfront despite the return of Alex Brosque. Brosque, back from international duty with the Qantas Socceroos, will come face-to-face with former Queensland team-mate Karl Dodd, however, another former Roar striker, Royce Brownlie, has not been selected in Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert's 16-man travelling party. Goalkeeper Mark Paston and midfielder Tim Brown are in contention for their first Hyundai A-League appearances of the season while for Sydney, Ruben Zadkovich returns as does goalkeeper Clint Bolton, who like Fyfe will make his 50th league appearance if selected. Culina will have to omit five more names from his expanded 20-man squad on Friday.

  17. Re: A League Round 3 - Adelaide v Melbourne (Fri 7th Sep - 7:30pm) 90m Adelaide 1 - 1 Melbourne Game ends in a draw and Adelaide had 2 late chances on 90 minutes. Brilliant cross from the right sees Nathan Burns head into an open goal and it hits the crossbar, should have been the winner. A minute late Dodd has another header which only had to be on target and it is a win to Adelaide, he heads just wide to the right. Melbourne defence held up well but they barely had a shot on goal, they were poor up front and well held. Adelaide were easily the better side and deserved to win. Disappointing result to know your team should have won but they never did. So close, but yet so far. :sad

  18. Re: A League Round 3 - Adelaide v Melbourne (Fri 7th Sep - 7:30pm) 80m Adelaide 0 - 1 Melbourne Keeper comes out for Adelaide from a cross and misjudges it and Melbourne score an unlikely goal through Rodrigo Vargas. Adelaide has had about 66% of the play in the second hal. Deflating as Adelaide are clearly the better side, Melbourne a shadow of their former selves.

  19. Re: A League Round 3 - Adelaide v Melbourne (Fri 7th Sep - 7:30pm) Interesting game so far where Melbourne came out attacking hard for the first 15 minutes before Adelaide settled into a good passing game to wrest control back. Both sides have had a clear chance each, but it is Adelaide who have been on top in the last 15 minutes and are looking the better side. Both defences are on top and to be honest I can't see where melbourne is going to get a goal unless they get one on the counter attack. Adelaide is very strong down back with Costanzo and Agostino, while the Victory defence is also proving hard to crack for Adelaide. Should be a good second half and the longer the game goes on the more I feel Adelaide will score. It doesn't look like 3 goals will be scored at this stage for the Over 2.5, but you you never know in football.
