  2. Re: Australian A League - Round 13 (Fri 16th Nov - Sun 18th Nov) Queensland Roar 1 - 0 Melbourne Victory (Kruse 10) 17,207 at Suncorp Stadium Frank Farina has celebrated the first anniversary of his arrival as Queensland Roar coach with a 1-0 victory over defending champion Melbourne Victory in front of the club's biggest crowd of the season. 17,207 fans witnessed Queensland extend its unbeaten run to seven games, and win three consecutive matches for the first time in its brief history, thanks to teenager Robbie Kruse's first-half winner. The 19-year-old scored his third goal of the season in just his seventh Hyundai A-League start and might have added another when he struck the post with a composed effort in the second-half. "If we've got aspirations of doing well in the league we've got to show it by beating the best," Farina said afterwards. "It's good to get a win, particularly here at home, and continue the sequence that we're on at the moment." Melbourne, missing skipper Kevin Muscat, Ljubo Milicevic and Joe Keenan, created more after half-time but couldn't break down a Roar backline which played for 60 minutes without injured captain Craig Moore. Victory striker Daniel Allsopp wasted an excellent chance to equalise when he blasted Archie Thompson's centre over the crossbar on the hour mark while Carlos Hernandez also saw a free-kick cannon back off the upright with 12 minutes remaining. Queensland, though, will be sweating on the fitness of Moore who was withdrawn on the half-hour after twisting his ankle in an innocuous challenge with Qantas Socceroos team-mate Thompson. "He couldn't push off and get any power and that's pretty much his game in that position, especially when you've got Archie Thompson running around in front of you," said Farina. The hosts opened the scoring when Kruse received a pinpoint through ball from Matt McKay before cutting inside stand-in Melbourne captain Grant Brebner and Steven Pace and curling a precise right-footed finish wide of goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos. Melbourne had Theoklitos to thank for stopping the Roar surging further ahead in a dominant opening spell. Just a minute later Marcinho stung the Victory goalkeeper's hands from distance before the Brazilian playmaker forced him into another fine stop after Sasa Ognenovski had beaten the offside trap and squared a perfect cutback. McKay, in his 50th Hyundai A-League game, almost capitalised on more hesitancy in Melbourne's midfield when he drilled marginally wide from Kruse's centre. But the Roar lost momentum when Moore limped from the field and was replaced by Ben Griffin with Rodrigo Vargas almost punishing Griffin's lack of concentration with a headed chance from a corner. That was a rare Victory opportunity in the first-half although Thompson did stab an effort towards goal on the stroke of half-time. During the break Ernie Merrick threw on Leandro Love and shifted Steve Pantelidis into defence, a move which generated more possession for the visitors. Leandro's presence inside created acres of space for Thompson on the right but Allsopp, who had pulled off the shoulder of Griffin, could only side-foot over from six yards with the goal gaping. The excellent Kruse also spurned a golden chance to increase Queensland's lead in the 65th minute when he hit Theoklitos' left-hand post as the ball dropped into his path from a Roar free-kick. Hernandez then curled a clever free-kick in front of the Roar wall but watched in despair as it too rebounded into the post with Queensland 'keeper Liam Reddy heading in the wrong direction. "I didn't think we competed well in the first-half. When we were put under pressure we gave away the ball cheaply and we struggled big time in midfield," Merrick said. "We fixed that in the second-half and created some chances, but we don't score goals." Melbourne will assess the fitness of Pace (torn calf), Matthew Kemp (back) and Sebastian Ryall, who Merrick described as 'exhausted' after the Qantas Young Socceroos tour of Vietnam, ahead of next Saturday's visit of Wellington.

  3. Re: Australian A League - Round 13 (Fri 16th Nov - Sun 18th Nov) An epic battle within a battle could decide tonight's A-League showdown between Queensland Roar and Melbourne Victory. The competition's best striker, Victory marksman Archie Thompson, takes one of the league's top defenders, Roar skipper Craig Moore, at Suncorp Stadium. A friendship forged during Australia's 2006 World Cup campaign will be put on ice tonight in what shapes as a crucial 90 minutes for both sides. Defending champion Melbourne, already two points outside the four, can ill-afford another slip-up, while the second-placed Roar would unhinge six weeks of good work with a loss. Thompson and the Victory hold bragging rights, with the 29-year-old forward scoring in Melbourne's 2-0 win over Queensland in round six. That defeat still irks Moore, who said his side switched off in the second half when the game was there for the taking. "We lost two bad goals. We'd love to get our own back," the 31-year-old former Socceroos captain said. Thompson has fond memories of that September night, joking yesterday that he "shoved it up" Moore after his close pal sledged him about his weight. "He was telling me I was fat, and I actually started to feel like I was," a grinning Thompson said. "Then I scored. Hopefully I can get another one over him this time." Jokes aside, Moore and Thompson have great respect for each other. "A lot of people just see Archie's goals, but he puts in a good shift," Moore said. "He's always thinking about the game, where he can drag people and looks at gaining every advantage. Thompson said the A-League was privileged to have a player of Moore's calibre in its ranks. "Great player, good defender, reads the game well -- it'll be an interesting game," said the man who scored five times in Melbourne's 6-0 thrashing of Adelaide in last season's grand final. The Victory will have Roddy Vargas available tonight after the defender had one game of a two-match ban for violent conduct suspended. Marcinho is set to start for the Roar in the absence of Olyroo winger Michael Zullo, while Andrew Packer will replace suspended defender Josh McCloughan.

  4. Re: Australian A League - Round 13 (Fri 16th Nov - Sun 18th Nov) Queensland Roar v Melbourne Victory Preview Head-to-head Seven league meetings: Melbourne - 4 wins, Queensland - 2 wins, 1 draw Previous meeting Melbourne 2 Queensland 0 (Telstra Dome, Hyundai A-League round six, September 2007) Past five results Queensland: Win - Draw - Draw - Win - Win Melbourne: Loss - Win - Loss - Loss - Draw Suspensions and Qantas Australia under-23 call-ups will test the skills of two of the league's most-credentialed coaches when Queensland Roar hosts Melbourne Victory in a Friday night blockbuster. Victory coach Ernie Merrick must do without talisman Kevin Muscat and Roar boss Frank Farina without Josh McCloughan after the combative pair collected their fourth yellow cards of the season in round 12. Melbourne must also manage without Joe Keenan, who is also serving a suspension, although Steve Pantelidis makes a timely return from his ban after the club's appeal to reduce his sentence to two matches from three was upheld. Fellow defender Rodrigo Vargas will also now be available after his two-match ban was cut to one match and is tipped to partner Steven Pace in central defence. McCloughan has made the left-back position his own this season but Farina has a couple of backup options not least Andrew Packer, who played in that role for the second-half of last year. Ben Griffin is also added to the squad. Former Qantas Socceroo Danny Tiatto, however, has failed a fitness test on his groin strain and is now pencilled in to make his return next week against Sydney FC. An intriguing subplot is whether Farina alters the 4-3-3 formation - which has provoked such a competitive response from his players - after left-sided striker Michael Zullo won his first Qantas Australia under-23 side berth this week. It's little coincidence that the Roar's six-match unbeaten run since it lost to Melbourne in late September, which has taken the club from second bottom to second from top, has coincided with Zullo's promotion to the starting XI along with Robbie Kruse. Marcinho, a goalscoring substitute last week against the Phoenix after a hamstring problem, has offered his services in that position while Mitch Nichols, who scored five times for the Qantas Young Socceroos in Vietnam, is an outside chance although does not return from Vietnam until Friday morning. For Melbourne, Daniel Vasilevski made his first starting appearance against Sydney FC and could keep his place on the right despite the return of Sebastian Ryall from international duty. Ryall, who scored twice in the 15-0 thumping of minnows Guam as the Australian under-20s easily qualified for next year's Asian Youth Championships, is being flown business class straight to Brisbane and is scheduled to arrive 24 hours before kick-off.

  8. Re: The MELBOURNE CUP run Tuesday November 6 at 3:00pm in Australia This very simple quick pick betting system has found plenty of Melbourne Cup winners and placegetters in the past, some at absolutely huge odds. Here are the simple to follow rules: 1. The horse must have finished no worse than fourth at its last start. 2. The horse must have a win over 2800 metres or further. These are the A Grade qualifiers. For additional selections: 3. Also include horses who are trained by a previous Melbourne Cup winning trainer. 4. Also include horses who are ridden by a previous Melbourne Cup winning jockey. This will give you plenty of selections for the Cup, some at huge odds. It's also ideal as a guide for your Melbourne Cup quinellas and trifectas. The qualifiers can also be used in doubles.

  10. Re: The MELBOURNE CUP run Tuesday November 6 at 3:00pm Flemington track to improve Flemington course manager Terry Watson is confident the track will be upgraded to a Dead 5 for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup. The track, which raced as a Good 3 on Saturday, was downgraded to a Slow 7 on Sunday afternoon after being inundated with 25mm of rain after the Derby Day meeting. But with no rain falling since late Sunday afternoon and strong winds blowing across Flemington, the track was rated a Slow 6 on Monday morning, with a penetrometer reading of 5.16, down from 5.27 on Sunday. Watson was confident the track would be a Dead 5 by Tuesday morning, with the possibility of a further upgrade to a Dead 4 provided there was no further rain. The weather forecast in Melbourne for Monday and Tuesday was for fine weather. "I think it'll get to dead tomorrow. If this weather stays up the way it is and we don't get any more rain I feel sure it'll get to dead tomorrow," Watson said. "It's improving all the time. The weather here is fine. There's a nice breeze blowing so that's helping the track." "I don't think there's too much more rain so with a bit of luck it'll be much improved by tomorrow." Dead going would not prevent dry-trackers from running well, Watson said. "I think it's the middle ground that should suit everyone I'd think," he said. And he was confident the track would race evenly. Traditionally, the track at Flemington has favoured horses racing wide as the week progressed. "I was very happy with the way the track came through Saturday's racing. There was minimal damage through 10 races," he said.

  11. Re: The MELBOURNE CUP run Tuesday November 6 at 3:00pm Melbourne Cup Preview 1. Tawqeet (David Hayes) D.Dunn (3) 57 ($51) Only good run thus far this spring came when fifth in the Caulfield Cup, which is usually a good form race. Flopped as favourite last year and going worse in 2007. Wet not a problem but win would surprise. 2. Blue Monday (David Hayes) N.Rawiller (14) 56 ($51) Stablemate of Tawqeet. Ran fourth in the Caulfield Cup after solid weight-for-age form this spring. Is a two-time winner in wet but won no further than 2217m. Definite place claims. 3. Blutigeroo (Colin Little) L.Nolen (12) 55.5 ($31) If Purple Moon's run in the Caulfield Cup was the best outside of the winner's, then this one's effort wasn't far off. Weight-for-age form has been OK. Loves the wet and ran fifth to Gallic in 2007 Sydney Cup. A good roughie. 4. Gallic (Graeme Rogerson) S.Arnold (24) 55.5 ($26) Brave old warhorse. Likely to race in the midfield and hardly runs a bad race. Sydney and Adelaide Cup winner in autumn and won Moonee Valley Cup last start. Age and barrier some concern but is unbeaten at 3200. Won five times in dead going. 5. Railings (Roger James) G.Childs (18) 55.5 ($301) Not won in 20 starts since 2005 Caulfield Cup. Cannot handle the wet, out of form and unplaced at two tries at 3200. Won't run last but won't win either. 6. Efficient (Graeme Rogerson) M.Rodd (10) 54.5 ($15) Has not scored since last year's VRC Derby win. Shapes as though the 3200 will suit and this is the race he has been trained for. Finished with Zipping in Cox Plate and that horse is rated a top chance. Improvement needed. 7. Maybe Better (Brian Mayfield-Smith) C.Brown (7) 54 ($16) Ran third last year behind Japanese pair. Only bad run this campaign came in Caulfield Cup but showed with even Mackinnon run that has recovered. Likes the sting out of the ground but not going as well as last year. Place claims. 8. Tungsten Strike (Amanda Perrett) D.Holland (2) 54 ($41) Low-key raider who will run the 3200. The wet does not suit but other international trainers don't mind him. Could be the pacesetter. 9. Zipping (Graeme Rogerson) D.Nikolic (22) 54 ($8) Came fourth last year with 52.5kg and is going just as well this year. Ran a bottler in the Mackinnon and drops 5kg. Loves Flemington and the wet. Wide draw a minus but still can win. Each way all day. 10. Black Tom (David Hayes) P.Hall (21) 53.5 ($201) Another Hayes runner. Trainer didn't want to run him but owners pulled rank. Terrible at past three but has won at 3200. Doesn't like the wet. Perhaps not. 11. Master O'Reilly (Danny O'Brien) V.Duric (17) 53.5 ($5) Rises 3kg after dominant win in Caulfield Cup. Hard to see anything from that race knocking him off. Has a win and a third from three wet-track runs. Flemington suits as does the 3200. The one they have to beat. 12. Purple Moon (Luca Cumani) D.Oliver (15) 53.5 ($10) Liked his run in the Caulfield Cup but still finished 6.75 lengths from winner. Has services of Damien Oliver, who won in 1995 and 2002. The wet track does not help, barrier is OK but 3200 won't worry him. Rain brings him back to field. 13. Lazer Sharp (David Hayes) B.Shinn (16) 52.5 ($61) Trainer says it's his best hope if it buckets down. Is a very strong stayer as shown in dominant Group One wins over 2500 in autumn. Hitting form at right time but one fancies best might be 12 months away. Can win if wet, otherwise place claims. 14. On A Jeune (Andrew Payne) K.McEvoy (4) 52.5 ($31) Fourth crack at this race. Ran second to Makybe Diva in 2005 at big odds. Has raced OK in lower classes but also drops in weight. Jockey won the race in 2000. Drawn well but not sure if he'll run well. 15. Scenic Shot (Daniel Morton) M.Zahra (19) 52.5 ($81) If you can forgive Caulfield Cup failure his form reads OK. Slashing Turnbull effort, serviceable in the Mackinnon. Could not win Perth Cup with 54.5kg which does not bode well for Tuesday. Change of rider may not bring change of fortune. 16. Sarrera (Mike Moroney) S.Murphy (a) (23) 52 ($101) Is a mudlark so should be shorter than $151. Hasn't carried 52 for a long time and form has been OK. A query at the 3200. If it keeps raining he could be last one standing. 17. Sculptor (Peter Mckenzie) Ms L.Cropp (8) 52 ($26) Very strong staying effort in the Saab and down 3kg on that effort. Ran fourth in Queensland Cup to Ice Chariot, who failed in 2006 Melbourne Cup. The wetter the better but prepared to risk. 18. Dolphin Jo (Terry and Karina O'Sullivan) Ms C.Lindop (1) 51.5 ($41) Pity he drew the inside as he prefers galloping room. Tough stayer who won't be bothered by 3200. Won here three starts ago over 2530m and can improve on 15th in this race last year. Prefers sting out of track. Can place. 19. Douro Valley (Danny O'Brien) J.Winks (13) 51.5 ($31) One of the best performed horses this spring. Runner-up in the Caulfield Cup but jockey felt he laboured a little in dying stages so 3200 a slight worry. Held his own in the Mackinnon and drops 7.5kg for Tuesday. Likes the wet so cannot discard. 20. Sirmione (Bart Cummings) P.Mertens (20) 51.5 ($11) Could have written your own ticket for him prior to shock win in Mackinnon. Now he must come into reckoning. Drops 7kg but master trainer is unsure of his 3200m credentials. But you can't sack anything trained by Bart in the Cup. 21. The Fuzz (David Hayes) C.Williams (11) 51.5 ($41) Hayes says it's his stable elect if dry and has top jock aboard. Won well in Geelong Cup but outstayed in Saab. Did make long run three-wide so looks better than it does on paper. Good lightweight hope. 22. Eskimo Queen (Mike Moroney) C.Newitt (5) 51 ($26) Queensland Oaks winner who ran nice race in the Cox Plate. Missed Caulfield Cup run which is not ideal as has not had a run over 2400m since June. Strong weight-for-age form, drawn well and has won on dead. Wouldn't want it too wet. Each way claims. 23. Princess Coup (Mark Walker) N.Harris (9) 51 ($11) Followed Caulfield Cup third with excellent run in Mackinnon. Is beautifully weighted, well drawn and in-form. Jockey came third in 1992 on Castletown. Wet a query as is distance but can win if handles both. 24. Mahler (Aidan O'Brien) S.Baster (6) 50.5 ($8.50) Punters have come for him despite trainer's feeling he does not like wet. Is still three by northern hemisphere time. Has won at the distance and draw favours on-pace style. Must have in multiples.

  14. Re: The Melbourne Cup run Tuesday November 6 at 3:00pm Scorpion out of Cup Melbourne Cup top weight Scorpion is officially out of this year's big race, trainer Aidan O'Brien announced on Tuesday afternoon. Scorpion was found to be lame in the off hind stifle following a gallop at Sandown on Monday morning, leaving O'Brien with no option but to abort plans to run in the Melbourne Cup with the three-time Group One winner. The injury leaves three-year-old Mahler as O'Brien's lone representative in next Tuesday's race. It caps off a shocking few days for the Irish trainer, who watched forlornly as his star galloper George Washington was put down after suffering horrific legs fractures in Sunday's Breeders Cup meeting in the US. Scorpion had been rated a $13 chance with bookmakers in Australia before breaking down. Last year, English stayer Wunderwood, who was trained by David Elsworth, was put down in Melbourne following a track accident in the days leading up to the 3200m race.

  16. 39 left in Cup That time of year when Australia's richest race the Melbourne Cup is run and it is now worth over $5,000,000 and that sees a few overseas horses competing. So we may be able to get some input from you knowledgeable overseas punters about the chances of some of your raiders. Only 39 horses remain nominated for the $5 million Melbourne Cup, with Saturday's meeting at Flemington the final opportunity for the six unqualified horses to gain a start in the 3200m classic. The elimination order for Australia's richest race has been confirmed after third declarations were taken with all the major chances still entered. NSW stayer Leica Falcon has lost its hopes of running in the race and was not paid up for. The top 24 eligible horses will be chosen for the final field after Saturday's meeting which features the traditional lead-up races, the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) and the Saab Quality (2500m). Dolphin Jo is currently 25th in order of entry, while other qualified horses currently outside the top 24 are New Kid in Town, Geelong Cup winner The Fuzz, New Zealand stayer Sculptor, Desert Master, Zavite, Sentire, Bay story and Southern Courage. King of Ashford, Annenkov, Utility, Cefalu, Pacino and three-year-old Best Beware are all yet to pass the qualifying clause. 18. Re: A League Round 10 - Adelaide v Wellington (Sun 28th Oct - 4:30pm) Phoenix captain Ross Aloisi will return to Adelaide for the first time since his parting of ways at the end of last season with Wellington looking to move on from a horror month as quickly as possible. The New Zealanders have lost all three matches through October and even though coach Ricki Herbert said that the first-half last week against the Mariners was the club's best 45 minutes of the season, his side still lost their concentration in the final stages to again lose 2-1. In fact, defensive mix-ups - in spite of the returns of regular full-backs Jeremy Christie and Tony Lochhead from All Whites duty - were to blame for both the Mariners goals last Sunday so Herbert might have already been considering changes before he discovered Karl Dodd was to serve a one-match ban for accumulating four cautions. Dodd has been Wellington's best defender with Herbert likely to replace him with Steven Old in what will be a daunting challenge against an attack-minded Reds forward line. Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar stuck to a winning formula against Sydney FC and it paid dividends with the club's one-goal victory - courtesy of Lucas Pantelis' second successive goal - its first at Sydney Football Stadium. The Reds might have now gone five games without defeat - a run which started at Westpac Stadium last month - but don't expect Vidmar to keep Nathan Burns on the outer for too long. Neither Burns nor Kristian Sarkies started against Sydney but are likely to come back into contention for a starting berth while Milan Susak is in pole position to replace Ange Costanzo (knee) in an inexperienced looking central defence. Shaun Ontong is another possibility. Marquee striker Paul Agostino (calf), Bruce Djite (ankle) and Bobby Petta (calf) are also high profile absentees alongside club captain Michael Valkanis (knee) but their losses don't appear to be causing much hesitation in Vidmar's on-song side. Indeed Adelaide is so strong at home, you have to go back to the start of the calendar year to find its last home domestic defeat - a 1-0 defeat to the Roar. That's a sequence of 10 games now without defeat at Hindmarsh. Wellington's leading scorer Shane Smeltz, who played seven times for Adelaide United in the former national league, scoring once, will be helped by Felipe being passed fit following a hamstring tear while Vaughan Coveny replaces youngster Costa Barbarouses.

Adelaide's current undefeated home streak stands at six, equal to a six-match undefeated home match streak attained in November 2005 to February 2006. The last time Adelaide lost at home was in Round 19 of the 2006/07 season (4-Jan-07), a 1-0 loss to the Queensland Roar.

  20. Re: A League Round 10 - Sydney v Central Coast (Sun 28th Oct - 3:00pm) The match previously billed as the return of Qantas Socceroos World Cup star John Aloisi against Sydney FC recruit Michael Bridges has been hijacked by John Kosmina's unveiling as the new boss in the harbour city. Sydney reacted speedily after letting go Branko Culina by confirming its appointment of the former Adelaide United coach and 2005/06 premiership winner this week. Kosmina has only a matter of days to stamp his mark on a side which has lost four times at SFS this season already and faces a potentially season-defining clash with the Central Coast on Sunday. The match, with his new club languishing in sixth on nine points, presents an unusual scenario for Kosmina who spent almost all his managerial career with Adelaide on the top half of the Hyundai A-League ladder. But he does possess a healthy record against the Mariners with three wins and two draws in his six league meetings with the current table toppers during his Reds tenure. Adding the drama, Kosmina still has four games of a five-match touchline ban to serve leaving new No.2 Anthony Crea in matchday charge of a side missing Mark Rudan (suspension) as well as midfielder Terry McFlynn (ankle) and Adam Casey who broke his leg in the 1-0 loss to Adelaide last week Sydney lost Mark Milligan on the eve of that match because of a calf strain picked up on international duty but he returns as do suspended duo Steve Corica and Ruben Zadkovich as well as Englishman Bridges pending his visa confirmation. Aloisi is also named for the much-anticipated NSW derby and is tipped to start upfront alongside former Sydney favourite Sasho Petrovski who has already scored against his old side this season. Central defender Alex Wilkinson has returned to full training after a knee injury and might make his first appearance since late August after his recall to the squad. Brad Porter also gets the nod after serving a one-match ban. Adam Kwasnik, a first-half substitute in last week's 2-1 win over the Phoenix, will earn his 50th Hyundai A-League cap if selected after a calf problem. Kwasnik came on earlier than anticipated in Wellington after Andrew Clark limped off with a hamstring injury.
