  1. Re: A League Round 3 - Adelaide v Melbourne (Fri 7th Sep - 7:30pm)

Id favour a draw if anything' date=' but with players missing from both teams, and neither team in the greatest form, i think this match is too hard to pick :loon[/quote'] I reckon Adelaide's form is first class Ads. They won pre season Cup and then had a draw in Queensland, then had the draw in Sydney, two away games. Adelaide were no good on the road last year, they played their best football at home, so to have a couple of good draws away and score two goals in both games is encouraging for Adelaide supporters. I think playing in the Asian Cup has blended them together a bit as a team, and they are playing solid football. At least they have players who can take chances when they are created.
  2. Re: A League Round 3 - Adelaide v Melbourne (Fri 7th Sep - 7:30pm) Good luck with the over 2.5 goals guys and hope you get it in. :ok May need Adelaide to kick a couple because the Victory will find it hard without Thomson. Archie is their most productive forward. Allsop plays better when Thomson is along side him too. Melbourne have not hit their straps yet and have many injury concerns, and they never even troubled the Perth keeper last week when playing at home in front of 30,000 people. They should improve each week though with match time and fitness.

The Sydney FC custodian has the distinction of being the only player who has not missed a minute of action for his club (excluding newcomers Wellington Phoenix) in the Hyundai A-League since the league kicked-off in August 2005. In fact, Bolton had not missed a match for his club at national league level in Australia since February 2000 (Round 22 of the 1999/2000 NSL season, when he was with Brisbane Strikers) which put his streak of consecutive national league matches at 183. The all-time record of consecutive matches in the old NSL is 214, set by Bobby Russell (Adelaide City, South Melbourne) between August 1980 and May 1988.

  5. Wellington Phoenix v Newcastle Jets Date: Sunday September 9 Kick-off (local time): 5.00pm Venue: Westpac Stadium Radio coverage: The Radio Network 1035 AM (Wellington), ABC 1233 (Newcastle) Head-to-head First league meeting Previous meeting Wellington 0 Newcastle 0 (Westpac Stadium, Pre-Season Cup final round, August 2007) Past five results Wellington: Loss - Win - Draw - Draw - Loss Newcastle: Loss - Win - Draw - Draw - Draw Analysis Wellington Phoenix triumvirate Vaughan Coveny, Tim Brown and Steven Old have all been named in the squad to face former club Newcastle Jets while Kurri Kurri-born Richard Johnson, who played for the Jets in season one, is also included. If selected, Brown, who played seven times under Newcastle coach Gary van Egmond last season, will make his Phoenix debut after sitting out the season so far with hamstring and groin injuries. The tenacious Johnson has also had his Phoenix league debut delayed by an Achilles problem but has been an unused substitute in each of the club's past two league fixtures. Meanwhile, Wellington coach Ricki Herbert will be glad Old is available for selection, a piece of news which smoothes his immediate return to a backline which struggled at times to retain the rampant Mariners last Friday. After watching his side get repeatedly torn apart by the Central Coast in the first-half, Herbert has urged his players to be alert from the opening whistle and will be aided by the return of the former New Zealand young player-of-the-year from a bout of flu. Brazilian George is omitted while Vince Lia rests because of a thigh strain. Newcastle's preparation has been hindered by Qantas under-23s coach Graham Arnold calling up four Jets players for the training camp prior to Saturday's Olympic qualifier against North Korea at EnergyAustralia Stadium. Arnold has selected Mark Bridge, Stuart Musialik, Jobe Wheelhouse and Troy Hearfield for the Qantas under 23 camp but Wheelhouse and Hearfield will be available to Van Egmond for the trip to New Zealand after only being named in the train-on squad. That's vital to the Jets boss who is already without Andrew Durante (ankle) while marquee signing Mario Jardel has visa complications, although Argentine winger Jorge Drovandi does earn a reprieve along with Tarek Elrich. Van Egmond has said Drovandi needs to be allowed time to adapt to the pace of the Hyundai A-League but at least Joel Griffiths has rediscovered his goalscoring knack. Griffith's delightful free-kick against Queensland was his fourth goal in his past five competitive games.

  6. Perth Glory v Sydney FC Date: Sunday September 9 Kick-off (local time): 3.00pm Venue: Members Equity Stadium Radio coverage: 6PR 882AM, SportFM (both Perth) Head-to-head Six league meetings: Sydney - 3 wins, 3 draws Previous meeting Sydney 1 Perth 0 (Sydney Football Stadium, Hyundai A-League round 17, December 2006) Past five results Perth: Win - Win - Loss - Draw - Draw Sydney: Loss - Loss - Win - Loss - Draw Analysis In a season where injuries and unavailability to key players have dominated the headlines, it's hard to understate the impact of Brazilian World Cup winner Juninho's likely six-week absence because of a shoulder problem to Sydney FC's premiership ambitions. Juninho reportedly turned down the chance of corrective surgery because of the three-month recuperation period and will now hope to return to action in half that time after undergoing cortisone injections to reduce the inflammation in his right shoulder. As well as the South American playmaker, versatile duo Mark Milligan and Ruben Zadkovich also miss the trip to Perth - a side Sydney has never lost to in six Hyundai A-League meetings - with fellow Brazilian Patrick in line to replace striker Alex Brosque upfront. Brosque and Clint Bolton are in camp with the national team although former Qantas Socceroos defender Tony Popovic is apparently available despite hurting his back in a collision with Bolton last weekend against Adelaide United. With Bolton set to miss his first-ever Hyundai A-League match and back-up 'keeper Ivan Necevski sidelined with an ankle injury, unheralded goalkeeping pair Matthew Nash and Michael Herbert are vying for a start. Sydney coach Branko Culina also drafts in short-term signings Robbie Cattanach and Matthew Jurman with striker Adam Casey making a sooner-than-expected return from a hamstring tear. Meanwhile, the status of Perth Glory's decimated defensive stocks has gone from bad to worse following Simon Colosimo and Nikolai Topor-Stanley's respective call-ups to the Qantas Socceroos and Qantas Under-23 squads. Of the back four which began the season, Perth coach Ron Smith has now lost Topor-Stanley as well as David Tarka to a season-ending knee injury with Hayden Foxe already on the casualty list with a knee problem of his own and Stan Lazaridis suspended. Factor in Colosimo's absence for this weekend's visit of the inaugural champion after his national team recall and Perth is down to its barest bones at the back. Holding midfielder Mitchell Prentice made his Hyundai A-League debut as an emergency left-back a fortnight ago while attacking midfielder Naum Sekulovski occasionally deputised at full-back last season. Sekulovski's appearance against Melbourne last week was cut short after a high challenge from Victory defender Steve Pantelidis left him with a suspected fractured cheekbone but he does retain his place in the squad. The Glory, which has now not been beaten at Members Equity Stadium since October 2006, has also lost midfielder Billy Celeski and goalkeeper Tando Valaphi to international duty with fellow midfielder David Micevski a late national team call-up following the withdrawal of Bundesliga-based pair Dario Vidosic and Matt Spiranovic. That has forced Smith to bring in former Queensland Roar players Tyler and Jordan Simpson, subject to FFA clearance, while midfielder Anthony Danze is also pushing for his first Hyundai A-League start. Tyler Simpson, a defender, started one game for Perth last season.

  7. Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) Mariners outlast Roar The Central Coast Mariners have extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points and maintained their 100 per-cent start to the season through a 1-0 win over Queensland Roar at a rain-drenched Suncorp Stadium. With three games still to play in the third round, the Mariners have already established a clear distance between themselves and the chasing pack after Adam Kwasnik's rifled winner handed the visitors their first win over the Roar in seven league meetings. The Queenslanders dominated proceedings but fell foul to a cleverly worked corner early in the second-half with the depleted Mariners, minus Qantas Socceroos call-up Dean Heffernan and No.1 Danny Vukovic, then holding on for a third successive Hyundai A-League victory. Vukovic's replacement, Matthew Trott, made two outstanding second-half saves to preserve the Central Coast's lead but the Roar was left to rue three chances spurned by South American playmaker Marcinho. Coach Frank Farina opted to continue with Danny Tiatto in central midfield despite the absence of Andrew Packer at left-back and, helped by the former Socceroo's influence, the Roar had steadily gained control of the midfield battle. Tiatto, who managed to avoid getting booked and so is free to travel to Perth next weekend, actually dislocated his left shoulder in the first-half in an innocuous challenge with Sasho Petrovski before bravely continuing. Goalkeeper Liam Reddy saved smartly from the onrushing Kwasnik on four minutes, but from then on Queensland manufactured the better goalscoring chances with Marcinho twice going close although failing to test Trott on either occasion. Central Coast midfielder Mile Jedinak, who had been designated to man-mark the Brazilian, was sticking to his task but with Petrovski and Nik Mrdja starved of service strikes on goal were few and far between. In the shadows of half-time, Andre Gumprecht and Simon Lynch both wasted clear-cut opportunities with the German midfielder firing wide after neat work from Petrovski and Lynch inches away from deflecting Matt McKay's centre past Trott. But 10 minutes after the break, a well-worked corner from Damien Brown caught the Roar defence napping and Kwasnik thundered a shot through a crowd of players and past the unsighted Reddy. Marcinho should have drawn the scores level after dancing through the Mariners backline but again failed to find the target with a rasping low drive before Trott's outstanding double save. First the 22-year-old Gosford-born 'keeper blocked Ante Milicic's effort after Tony Vidmar failed to clear, then pulled off an acrobatic one-handed diving stop to deny Reinaldo's goal-bound header. By now Queensland was throwing everything at the resolute Mariners but the league leader held firm to end a hoodoo stretching back over two seasons. Farina said afterwards he was unconcerned that the goalscoring problem which has dogged the club for two seasons remained unsolved. Adelaide have had more shots this season than Melbourne and it is worth noting that Adelaide have played two good sides in Queensland and Sydney and both away from home, so that’s a fair effort. Melbourne has played new team Wellington and perennial battlers Perth and have only had 3 shots on target in two games so far. From an offensive view point Adelaide has been much more fruitful, and Melbourne’s best attacker Archie Thompson is missing tonight. The Victory scored a goal about every 5 shots last season so they are well down on that figure this season.

It took Melbourne a few games to even score against Adelaide but last season they had the wood on them winning three from four games. At Hindmarsh Stadium Adelaide have only lost to the Victory once, and it is generally a fortress for them.

I don’t have time for much more of a review because the game start is not too far away. I have been impressed by Adelaide this season. They won the pre season Cup and have carried that form into the real season. Melbourne without Thomson is a very different side, and although Djite is out for Adelaide, they have noted playmaker Spagnoulo back. I am very confident of an Adelaide win tonight, although I thought they were a little shorter than I would have liked. Never the less I am on them in tonight’s Grand Final rematch.

  9. Re: A League Round 3 - Adelaide v Melbourne (Fri 7th Sep - 7:30pm) Adelaide's Agostino to start in Grand Final rematch It may only be Round 3 but Adelaide United FC’s first home game of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 Season tonight does not come any bigger than a grand final rematch against last season’s champions Melbourne Victory. Since the start of the Hyundai A-League the Adelaide v Melbourne rivalry has developed into one of the largest and with both teams searching for their first win of the 2007/08 season, Friday’s match looms as another aggressive, intense confrontation. Adelaide United have been strengthened with marquee signing and former Socceroo Paul Agostino set to make his highly anticipated home debut in the Hyundai A-League, and while he was not part of last season’s grand final, he is looking forward to taking it up to the Victory. The match will be a record tenth time the two sides have met in the Hyundai A-League, while Reds Captain Michael Valkanis and Vice-Captain Travis Dodd will reach a milestone, becoming the first players to play 50 Hyundai A-League games. Both squads have undergone significant changes in personnel since the grand final, with United fielding nine new players in its list including midfielder Lucas Pantelis who missed all of 2006/07 through injury. One of these new signings, Kristian Sarkies, will not get to front up against his former club as he is on Olyroos duty with striker Bruce Djite, while United’s other Olyroo Nathan Burns will be available for The Reds due to being suspended for the Qantas Australian Under 23’s next match on Saturday. Djite’s absence opens the door for Agostino to start, while last season’s Club Champion Jason Spagnuolo and former Miami FC player Diego have been brought into the squad. Melbourne Victory have also been forced to make a number of changes for Friday’s clash with danger man Archie Thompson who scored five goals in the grand final in camp with the Socceroos, while defenders Ljubo Milicevic and Joseph Keenan are out injured. One Victory player who will be keen to make an impression will be former United midfielder Matthew Kemp, who signed with last season’s champions in the off season. Despite a suspected broken wrist Victory Captain Kevin Muscat has been named to lead the visitors on Friday night, and his battle in the middle of the park with United hard man Jonas Salley will be a worth the admission price alone. With all of the incidents between the two sides in the past year, including the famous Muscat and John Kosmina incident, United ending Melbourne’s seven game unbeaten streak, the two red cards when the sides met in December 2006 at Hindmarsh Stadium, and the grand final result, another chapter will be written as the rivalry continues on tonight.

  10. Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) Well the Mariners at $2-80 turned out to be value indeed considering they were unbeaten and on top of the ladder by 4 points. Having said that, Queensland had more shots than a rabid dog in the second half but they were unable to convert, whereas the Mariners would have been lucky to have 2 or 3 and they managed to score. It is all about scoring goals and kudos to the Mariners for converting and going on to win the game. Queensland were clearly the better side but they could not score. Much like the game against Adelaide they were relentless in attack but were unable to find the winning goal. Top quality game and really should have been a draw, but the Mariners win and are currently 7 points clear on top.

  13. Re: A League Round 3 - Queensland Roar vs Central Coast (Thur 6th Sep - 8pm) Spot on regards the wet weather Matt as the first half had steady for most of the game. Queensland dominated the first half and again they had plenty of shots without every really threatening. Both sides have had limited chances and not really looked like scoring. The Roar defence has been hard to get past with Moore very strong down back. The Mariners have also been impenetrable with Boogaard continuing his fine early season form. At this stage the Over 2.5 looks like it will take a miracle to get up, but the draw is looking awfully good. :ok

The only 4 matches played between these two at Suncorp have finished in a draw (1 x 0-0.....2 x 1-1.....1 x 2-2). 6 out of 8 games this season have been draws-CC the only team not to have had a draw so far this season. I think it might be time for them to come to the "Draw Party". Therefore, my money is going on the Draw @ 3.35 (Betfair). O/U 2.5 goals too hard to split, if pushed I would say under. Godd Luck all. p.s. Thanks for the great info once again beejayville.
Cheers Cool :cheers Usually have more stats available early in the week, but been flat out like a lizard drinking this week. Looks like most of us are on the draw and over 2.5, so good luck all!!! Will be watching the game live and updating in here when I can be bothered :)
  17. Re: A League Round 3 - Adelaide v Melbourne (Fri 7th Sep - 7:30pm) Undermanned Victory holds off on selection TheE hour before kick-off is shaping as the most important time of Melbourne Victory's build-up to the A-League grand final rematch against Adelaide United. Victory will make a last-minute decision on injured defender Steve Pantelidis, while Kevin Muscat will play with his broken arm if a fitted guard is cleared by the referee before tomorrow night's game at Hindmarsh Stadium. Given there are some late team decisions to be made, Victory will fly to Adelaide today with a 16-man squad that includes potential A-League debutants Evan Berger, Sebastian Ryall and Daniel Vasilevski. Victory is short of players with Archie Thompson and Leigh Broxham on international duty, while Joseph Keenan (hamstring) and Ljubo Milicevic (knee) will miss the game due to injuries and Pantelidis (corked thigh) remains in doubt. It would seem Muscat, who broke his left arm in the first game of the season, is prepared to play against United with or without the guard, but whether he takes the field might be up to the referee and Victory medical staff. Victory officials have already tried to get approval from Football Federation Australia for Muscat to wear the arm guard, which he used at training yesterday, only for FFA to leave the decision up to the lead match official. The situation with Pantelidis is not promising, so Victory has placed recently signed Young Socceroos captain Ryall on standby to make his A-League debut. Even if Pantelidis is passed fit, it's likely Ryall will be on the bench as defensive insurance, meaning Vasilevski or Berger, who is only about 70 per cent fit after three months wout ith an injury, would miss. As Victory goes looking for its first win of the season after two draws from two games, the notion of taking several untried young players into a grand final rematch on hostile territory might be risky. But Merrick, buoyed by the fact goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos is over a hamstring scare, has confidence in the young players, while he knows the more experienced players will be composed and assured and pull the team together. The other significant inclusion for Victory will be Brazilian striker Leandro Love in his first start as a straight replacement for Thompson, who is in the Socceroos squad for Tuesday's friendly against Argentina.

Others Unavailable: Ljubo Milicevic (knee - 2 weeks) Archie Thompson is a huge loss for Melbourne and he is one player that is very hard to cover. Impending stats, facts and trivia Adelaide United pair Michael Valkanis and Travis Dodd are both set to become the historic first 50 Hyundai A-League appearance-makers against Melbourne Victory. Current club captain (Valkanis) and vice-captain (Dodd) have both missed just two Hyundai A-League matches since the competition's inception, with Adelaide United playing the most matches of any team in the first two seasons, 49, including seven finals series games. This match - featuring last season's two Grand Final teams - also marks the first time two teams have met on ten occasions in the Hyundai A-League. Their head-to-head record could not be and closer, both having won four matches to date (with one draw).

  19. Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory Date: Friday September 7 Kick-off (local time): 7.30pm Venue: Hindmarsh Stadium Radio coverage: Fresh FM (Adelaide), SEN1116 (Melbourne) Head-to-head Nine league meetings: Adelaide - 4 wins, Melbourne - 4 wins, 1 draw Previous meeting Melbourne 1 Adelaide 1 (Aurora Stadium, Launceston, Pre-Season Cup round one, July 2007) Past five results Adelaide: Win - Win - Win - Draw - Draw Melbourne: Loss - Loss - Loss - Draw - Draw Analysis Adelaide United will breathe a sigh of relief if it avoids meeting its grand final nemesis Archie Thompson after the Melbourne Victory striker was one of five Hyundai A-League players called up for next week's Qantas Socceroos clash with Argentina. But international commitments with the Qantas under-23s also rob former Victory midfielder Kristian Sarkies of the chance of facing his old club and making his league debut for Adelaide after a quad strain. Reds striker Bruce Djite joins Sarkies in camp with the Qantas Under-23s, which take on North Korea in Newcastle, as does Melbourne midfielder Leigh Broxham but two-goal hero Nathan Burns is available to play domestically because of an international ban. Djite's absence will force Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar into making changes to his starting XI for the first time in a month although former national team forward Paul Agostino is no mean replacement. Vidmar also welcomes back reigning player-of-the-year Jason Spagnuolo, midfielder Diego and goalkeeper Daniel Beltrame with loan signing Scott Higgins making way for the Adelaide No.1. Brazilian youngster Leandro Love has earned his first team chance according to Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick and is expected to replace Thompson in a like-for-like swap upfront after an eye-catching 30-minute appearance in the stalemate with Perth Glory. Merrick's major headaches, though, are in defence after wing-back Joseph Keenan was ruled out this week with a torn hamstring while Steve Pantelidis is struggling to overcome a badly corked thigh. The Victory boss will leave a decision on Pantelidis and captain Kevin Muscat, who will have to play with a lightweight cast protecting his broken arm, until just before kick-off, however, former Adelaide midfielder Matthew Kemp is set to make his first Hyundai A-League start for Melbourne after switching to Victoria during the close season. Ex-Marconi man Evan Berger has also been added to the travelling party despite the Melbourne coach conceding the 20-year-old is only 70 per cent fit after an ankle injury. New signing Sebastian Ryall also joins the squad for the first time, as does midfielder Daniel Vasilevski. Vidmar is still without central defender Milan Susak (hamstring) and striker Dez Giraldi (quad) while Merrick continues to rue the absence of Qantas Socceroos stopper Ljubo Milicevic (knee).

These teams have had five draws out of six games in all their A League meetings so far. They played each other in the pre season Cup and also had a 1-1 draw.

Both of these teams are leading the League in shots on goal, with Queensland the more accurate, but the Mariners have one more goal. The Roar have scored all their goals in the first half this season, so there if they are not in front at half time then on their stats this season they won't win, although it is only 2 weeks of stats. The Mariners have been on fire around goal and they have also been clinical in their finishing. CURRENT ODDS

The Mariners are great odds considering they are the only team to have won a game this season, and they have won two. Every other team has had a draw. These teams have had 3 games under 2.5 goals and 3 games over, and it could go wither way tonight. The Roar have Moore, Tiatto and Milicic back in the team tonight and they will strengthen them up no end. Seo is also back and his drive in midfield will be very beneficial. Ogenovski will still be a loss, but Queensland were very good last week against Newcastle with quality players missing. Central Coast are missing Dean Hefferenan who has been a rock in defence, and he also creates many forward plays, and his energy and creativity will be missed. This game could go either way, and their is definite value if you like the Mariners to win. The loss of Heffernan will hurt Central Coast and Queensland have gained some quality ins, and this sways me towards the draw tonight, and I also think there will be a few goals scored by two attacking sides. Queensland Roar/Central Coast Mariners DRAW @ $3-25 (Sportingbet) Over 2.5 Goals @ $1-95 (Centrebet) Good luck with your punting!
