Your only beating a pure bluff on the river, even an initial overpair is beating you now the board has paired, (or any 9 with a kicker of 7+ !!) I'm pretty sure I would still have lost chips here but wouldn't be calling the all-in on the river, so I think you can definitely get away from the river all-in. His turn bet looked pretty strong also, so a call would have kept the pot a little more managable, and you may then only have needed to call a smaller river bet.
