I was watching a poker video last night, and at one point the commentator, explaining why he'd decided to make a passive play, said "I don't want to shoot up the variance." Mrs. Slapdash (not a poker player) was in the room, looked puzzled, and asked "Is that a common poker expression?" It took a couple of minutes before it transpired that she thought he'd said "I don't want to shoot at Bavarians." :\
