The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April

The Masters Golf Tournament lens1844831_1232398393logo_Masters_Golf.jpg Bountiful, blooming azaleas. Endless green-hued vistas. Yep, it's that time of year again, golf fans. Masters week is upon us and, as always, there are numerous story lines entering the sport's biggest event. Major plotlines abound at Augusta National Golf Club, where the golf world will converge for this week's Masters Tournament. The preceding sentence could be written prior to this event any year, but it rings especially true entering this week's festivities. Greg Norman is making his return here after seven years of exile. Fred Couples is attempting to build on a strong week in Houston. Trevor Immelman is trying to become just the fourth back-to-back champion. Three teenagers are competing in the same Masters for the first time. Padraig Harrington is seeking his third straight major title in search of the Paddy Slam. Phil Mickelson is trying to win his third green jacket since 2004. And there's always the course, of course, with lingering questions about whether the roars will return to the back nine on Sunday. I'll get to each one of those in different areas here in the W18, but the No. 1 story entering the week -- as it's been in so many other tourneys before this -- revolves around Tiger Woods. As you might recall, the last stroke he took in competition occurred two weeks ago at Bay Hill, when he drained a 15-foot, 11-inch birdie putt on the final hole to prevail by a single shot. And so Woods enters this week on a high note, searching for his fifth career green jacket in his fourth appearance since returning from last year's season-ending knee surgery. "Tiger obviously made his splash at Bay Hill," Luke Donald said Sunday. "It's not his first event back, but ... Tiger's always the biggest story." Donald then thought about it for a second before suggesting, "If Harrington had a chance to win, that would be a pretty cool story." Yes, it would. Same goes for Norman. And Couples. And Mickelson, too. For now, though, it's Tiger's world and everyone else is just living it. Need further proof? Ratings for the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational were higher than any tourney since last year's U.S. Open -- and yes, that includes the British Open and PGA Championship. Another Masters title would tie Woods with The King, just one behind Jack Nicklaus' all-time record. And it would only ensure that TigerMania would continue to grow even bigger. The Masters Golf Tournament is unlike any other golf event in the world. Every second weekend in April (the 2009 Masters will take place the 9th-12th), the golf world comes calling focusing its attention on the first of the four major golf championships played at the historic Augusta National Golf Club. Since 1934, The Masters has become an annual 'right of spring'. For millions of golf fans, it marks the real beginning of the professional golf season. devicenzo-masters69.jpgSome of the most famous shots in golf history have been made on this historic course (Gene Sarazen's 1935 double eagle on 15 comes to mind) as well as some of the game's most notable blunders. For example, in 1968 Roberto DeVicenzo lost the Masters Tournament when he signed an incorrect final round scorecard allowing Bob Goalby to win the title. Actually, Goalby tied DeVicenzo at the end of regulation play and there would have been an 18-hole playoff on Monday had there not been a mistake on DeVicenzo's scorecard. On the final round, playing partner Tommy Aaron marked a 4 on the No. 17 hole when DeVicenzo had in fact made a 3. DeVicenzo failed to catch the mistake and signed the scorecard. PGA rules are very clear that the higher written score signed by a golfer on his card must stand. As such, the error gave Goalby the championship. BobbyJones.jpgThe finest golfers in the world convene at this course that the legendary Bobby Jones built. Each golfer arrives with visions of wearing the Green Jacket symbolic of being the Masters Champion on Sunday evening following the final round as well as pocketing over a million dollars in prize money. There have been some great champions in Masters history that have adorned the Green Jacket. Past champions include the likes of Horton Smith, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and defending champion Zach Johnson to name a notable few. Four times in the illustrious history of the Masters has the Champion made birdie on the 18th hole while making the final putt of the tournament to capture the title -- Phil Mickelson (2004), Mark O'Meara (1998), Sandy Lyle (1988), and Arnold Palmer (1960). Walk-off birdies, so to speak. The Masters has evolved from it's inception in those early days to become a Major Championship title and the Green Jacket is one of the most treasured and coveted trophies in the world of sports. The tradition of the Green Jacket at Augusta National Golf Club dates to 1937. That year, members of the club wore green jackets during the tournament so that fans in attendance could easily spot them if they needed to ask questions. Slipping a jacket onto the winner of The Masters is a tradition that began when Sam Snead put on the Green Jacket after his 1949 victory. Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Masters Golf Stats. First, since 1990 more than 75% of US Masters winners have won or finished 2nd at least once already that year. In that time, just Zach Johnson in 2007, Trevor Immelman in 2008, Jose Maria Olazabal in 1999, Ben Crenshaw in 1995 and Nick Faldo in 1990 failed to finish top 2 or better on either the US PGA or European tour in the year they won the tournament. However three golfers had already won the Masters in a previous year -- in 1994, 1984 and 1989 respectively Jose Maria Olazabal/ Ben Crenshaw & Nick Faldo. Augusta is likely to favour the big hitters. In their quest to keep their course current with ever evolving technology, Masters Officials more than ever tweak the famed Augusta National Course. Most recently adding several hundred much discussed yards, although this year they have trimmed it by 10 yards to make it 7435 yards long. In all it has been lengthened over 400 yards in the last 8 years. The course plays long so unless there is a lot or rain to negate the big hitters advantage, favour those golfers who rank well for driving distance. The other important golfer statistic is the Greens-In-Regulation (GIR) percentage. The GIR figure simply measures how often a golfer reaches the green in the regulation number of strokes (or less). For example, on a par 4 hole, regulation would be to make the green in two strokes. On a par 5, three strokes. To illustrate just how vital this statistic is, only twice in the last nine years has the Masters winner NOT ranked in the first two for GIR percentage at the tournament's conclusion. The Masters is a tournament for proven winners. Big name golfers such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Vijay Singh have tremendous records in this event. Mickelson for instance has finished only twice out of the top 10 since 1998 - Finishing 24th in 2007 and 12th in 1998. Unlike the British Open, surprise long odds winners are extremely rare. No golfer playing the Masters for the first time has won the tournament since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979, so previous Masters form is a must. Armed with the above pointers, it should be possible to eliminate a large percentage of the 2009 US Masters field as possible winners. The winning golfer is likely to have good previous Masters form, have won or finished second in a tournament at least once already that year, and rank highly in the driving distance and GIR stats for his respective tour.

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Ok narrowing the field down to take into account current seasons form and having competed well here previously (In no particular order): Most Bookmakers go 1/4 odds 1,2,3,4,5 places - However Paddypower go 6 places!!! Nick Watney - @51.00 EW Paddypower Competed here only once before last year finishing 11th. Won The Buick this year and finished 2nd in The World Golf Championships. Tiger Woods - No bet silly price and we should be able to get a much better price in running Has won this event 4 timespreviously 97, 01, 02 & 05 Won his last tournament The Arnold Palmer Invitational. Phil Mickelson - Again no bet silly price and look to get a better price in running Competed here 16 times with 11 top 10 finishes! Won here in 2004 & 2006 and has been 3rd here 3 times! Form has been impressive so far this year winning The Northern Trust Open and The World Golf Championship. Fred Couples - No bet The Shell Houston Open will have taken a lot out of Fred and he'll do well to the make cut! Has finished 3rd twice this year at The Northern Trust & yesterdays Shell Houston Open so I feel this should go some way to showing the form he has at the moment. He has only one time failed to miss the cut here last year in 24 outings! He won this event in 1992 and finished runner up here in 1998 and has 8 top 10 finishes. Richard Sterne - @251.00 EW Paddypower Competed here only once before last year finishing 25th. He has 2 wins to his name on the European Tour already this year The Alfred Dunhill & The South African Open. Justin Rose - @67.00 EW Paddypower Competed here 4 times previously and his best finish coming in 2007 where he finished 5th. He finished runner up in this years Dubai Desert Classic. Mike Weir - @67.00 EW William Hill Competed here 9 times and has 2 top 10 finishes and won it back in 2003.He finished runner up in this years AT&T Pebble Beach and 3rd at The Bob Hope. Geoff Ogilvy - No bet because his form here based against the price is not good! Competed here 3 times previously and his best finish was in 2006 finishing 16th. Has won twice already this year on the PGA Tour, The Mercedes Benz & The Accenture World Match Play. Retief Goosen - @26.00 EW Paddypower Competed here 10 times and having 4 top 10 finishes. Finished runner up here in 2002 and 3rd twice in 2005 & 2006. He won The Transitions Championship and finished 3rd in The AT&T Pebble Beach. YE Yang - @301.00 EW Totesport Competed here in 2007 for the only time finishing 30th. He won The Honda Classic this year. Paul Casey - No bet, although he's in blinding form I just feel that win yesterday will have taken a lot out of him mentally! Competed here 4 times with 2 top 10 finishes, his best in 2005 finishing 6th. Blinding form this season having won The Shell Houston Open, Finishing 2nd in The Accenture World Match Play, Winning The Abhu Dhabi and finishing 4th in The Desert Classic. Zach Johnson - @41.00 EW Paddypower Competed here 4 times winning here in 2007. He won this years Sony Open and finished 3rd at The Arnold Palmer Invitational. Henrik Stenson - @46.00 EW Totesport Competed here 3 times his best finish was 17th for the past 2 years. Has form this year finishing tied 3rd for the Shell Houston Open, runner up in The Qatar Masters, 3rd in The Dubai Desert Classic & 5th in The HSBC. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson & Geoff Ogilvy rank as leading contenders their prices are silly and I would much rather play them in running! Fred Couples & Paul Casey will have had a lot taken out of them in yesterday's Shell Houston Open and I can't see them being competitive at the business end of another 4 days of top quality golf! :ok

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April This is what i did last year which proved successful with profit made. I have ended up with a list of bets which some may think is a bit excessive however some of the longer prices are being taken to perhaps lay back for a small profit during the 4 days. Top 10 finishes over 5 years Woods 4 Mickleson 4 Goosen 3 Singh 3 Harrington 2 Immelman 2 Couples 2 Donald 2 Top 20 finishes over 5 years Woods 5 Goosen 5 Singh 5 Mickleson 4 Cink 4 Wier 3 Casey 3 Appleby 3 Harrington 3 Immelman 2 T Clark 2 F Couples 2 Leonard 2 Z Johnson 2 Donald 2 Looking at the markets: Top 10 finish V Singh 11/2 Stan James R Goosen 2/1 Bet365 S Cink 11/2 Stan James Z Johnson 10/3 Stan James Top European P Harrington 5/1 Stan James P Casey 7/1 Stan James L Donald 18/1 Bet365 Top ROW R Goosen 7/1 Bluesq V Singh 16/1 Bet365 T Immelman 22/1 Hills Top Aussie S Appleby 5/1 Totesport Top South African T Immelman 13/2 Stan JAmes Winner w/o woods F Couples 60/1 Paddy Power 12345 1/4 odds T Clark 70/1 Stan James 12345 1/4 odds S Appleby 60/1 Stan James 12345 1/4 odds S Cink 50/1 Stan James 12345 1/4 odds T Immelman 66/1 Stan James 12345 1/4 odds M Weir 50/1 Stan James 12345 1/4 odds L Donald 55/1 Paddy Power 12345 1/4 odds V Singh 50/1 VC bet 12345 1/4 odds Z Johnson 28/1 Stan James 12345 1/4 odds The above is what i am considering however will be looking at how to stake it over the next few days.

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Will be concentrating more on the match bets and 3 balls and will add any later on. Graeme Mcdowell @ 320 Betfair Mcdowell is way overpriced here and is a player i like a lot. The world no45 is a very steady player, great striker of the ball and has impressive driving accuracy stats. his only other appearance was 4 years ago where he missed the cut playing with the great Ben crenshaw on the first two days. Well mcdowell is a much improved player since then, and he also says he learned so much from the past champ, especially on the greens. He also comes here fresh after he had the last week off, where he spent a couple of days practicing at augusta, mostly on his short game so im happy he's coming here well prepared, and certainly a better player than he was in 2005. He' wouldnt need a great start for these odds to drop, so hopefully i can trade out. Will also add him for a top five or probably ten finish tomorrow. Here's hoping the irishman can make a mockery of these generous odds:hope

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Looking forward to what should be a cracking week. Will come back later in the week and do some more selections such as three balls if I see anything and possibly some more specialist outrights but will start with just 4 outrights for the week. Im doing all my prices with Paddy Power as they do 6 places but bear in my mind there may well be slighty better prices available elsewhere. Villegas 45/1 2 pts e.w There was a lot of hype about this Colombian for a long time without him really ding it but in the last 8 months or so he has justified some hype. He hit a rich streak of form on the pga tour last year which saw him win a couple of times and be a regular top 5 player. He also started doing it in the majors by placing in the pga and playing well in the open. This season he hasn’t won but has played well enough at times, 3 top 10 finishes if you include the matchplay where only the eventual winner beat him. His fifth in the other WGC shows his ability to do it on the top level too. Also on the pga tour so far this year (admittedly small sample) he is top of the gir stats which is a useful stat to have if he can translate it around here. Given the general form he has shown in the past year he is a major contender here even though he doesn’t have any real course background here. Stenson 40/1 2 pts e.w Stenson is a player I feel is ready to win a major now. He has done it in events like the wgc before and also on the European tour but there were signs in the last two majors that he is ready to take his form to a major stage. He finished third in the open and also placed in the pga where he was a serious contender to win. His current form this season has shown enough despite the odd poor week. He has managed three top 3 finishes already this season which shows that when gets into an event he is a major player. Last weeks third also encourages and seems good preparation for this. Even though Stenson has done little in previous masters he should really take to the course with the style of his booming and generally accurate enough drives and he could put his poor masters record right this week. Furyk 60/1 2 pts e.w Furyk is not a man really built for this course and his moderate record round here shows that perhaps but he is a golfer never to take lightly. For all that his record isn’t great here, he still hasn’t got the worst record, three top 6 finishes and has only missed the cut once. Perhaps he isn’t ideally suited to the course in that he isn’t the longest driver. However the shorter driver can surprise round here, Johnson won two years back and he isn’t the longest, Cink did well last year and he isn’t the longest either. Furyk’s form has been ok without being winning form so far this season, only one missed cut (first in a year) and that was his last event but one top 3 in a wgc. Interestingly though looking at his stats so far in the short sample on the pga tour, he appears to be putting a bit better than perhaps of recent years and that surprised me in truth. He is currently in the top 6 putters on the pga tour and that would have been more nearer bottom 6 in past years so perhaps thats something he has been working on and if he does have a hot week with the putter this week then he becomes a big danger. He is an even bigger price on the exchanges but going the shorter price for the e.w option which is always in play with Furyk. Mahan 75/1 2 pts e.w Mahan is a golfer without any record here (only been here twice) and really hasnt done it in the majors yet, only one top 10. However there is no doubting his talent in particular with his general golf and if he could have a hot week with the putter which possibly is a weaker part of his game he is a threat this week. He showed in the last ryder cup what a good player he is and also that he is a player who enjoys the big occasions. His form in 2009 has been steady without being that threatening, he hasn’t missed a cut (last cut missed was the pga last year)yet he hasn’t had a top5 yet. However he might just be peaking at the right time judging by a decent T6 last week and that could bode well for this week and the American could go quite well.

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Think Paul Casey is good ew price at around 33/1. Finished 11th last year when a last round 79 scuppered his chance of winning. Also finished 10th the year before when again a 1st round 79 left him playing catch up but on both occasions only finished 4 shots off place money. Comes into the tournament on the back of a win so his confidence should be high. Also having a look at Nick Watney 50/1 Robert Karlsson 50/1 and Sean Ohair 66/1

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April I'm an avid golfer, been reading ths site for a while, however this is my first post! really looking forward to the masters and fancy the following: Top GB&I player - Westwood 6/1 @ Hills Don't think this is a strong market, i feel Harrington is beatable and can't believe that McIlroy is half the odds that Westwood is! I think casey could struggle this week, and Rose isn't in brilliant form either, although he does have a good record around Augusta! Top Mainland Europe Player - Stenson 10/3 @ Hills Think this is a weak market and Stenson stands out, on form, has length for Augusta and starting to do well in the big events. Also, less fond of this but thinking of having a small play on: Top Debutant - Oosthuizen 16/1 @ Hills The price here is really what's tempting me! although odds don't suggest so i feel that Louis Oosthuizen is in the top 3/4 in this market and is certainly a very good EW bet! Please note these are Hills odds and you certainly can get better odds elsewhere...i have posted these odds as it's Hills i usually deal with! Any thots chaps?

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Incidentally Paddy, Lee Westwood is 9/1 with Paddypower to be the top GB&I Player! Ok on to some other value bets: Predictions: Top GB & I Player - Justin Rose @11.00 Paddypower As previously posted. Top Rest Of The World Player - Richard Sterne @67.00 EW Totesport YE Yang @81.00 EW Paddypower Top Debutant - Alvaro Quiros @15.00 Paddypower Quiros is being touted as the next big name from Spain and has already gone some way to proving that by winning the Portugal Masters at the end of 2008 and The Qatar Masters this year on the European Tour. Huge price for a huge hitter of the ball which is vital at Augusta and he is very good with the putter! Hopefully I will try and come back with some more value bets! For anybody who wants a useful tool, go to the following link: http://www.golfobserver.com/golfstats.php?c=282 It gives the performance chart for every player who is in the field at Augusta from previous years gone by :ok

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Young Rory Mcilroy is one to keep an eye on. Turned pro in 07 has been coming along nicely and is one for the future. Has had a good start to the year and could make a big impact in his first try in this. Has had big praise from top pro's including Tiger. Having said that i do think 33's is skiny enough for this but will watch this very talented Norn Iron lad with interest.

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April For anybody who really fancies Woods for The Masters it may play to be clever as his price for outright is ridiculous! Paddypower have a tournament specials list and have the following: How will Tiger win the 2009 US Masters

Tournament Specials
Singles Only
Exactly 1 shot 14 - 1
Exactly 2 shots 16 - 1
Exactly 3 shots 22 - 1
Exactly 4 shots 28 - 1
5 or more shots 13 - 2
Win by a playoff 14 - 1
Not Win the 2009 US Masters 4 - 11

This wonderkid is doin it wright now on the course, as you know. Great swing, Great length and an amazing temperate for one so young. The 19year old should be in the top ten bye next year, and imo(and a few others) that he will be the real challenge to wood's no1 spot in the years to come. For a dedutant i agree with you and,.wont be touching him at those odds, but if i can get nearer 45 50's in running, i may have a nibble.:D gl with any bets.

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Selections: Tiger Woods 10pts win Even at around 5/2 mark he is a decent bet to win this. He has everything the distance the touch and that special something only the greats possess. The five times winner will make it six. Camillo Villegas 5pts E/W At around 60/1 he has an excellent chance to chase Tiger home. An outstanding young golfer with flair and imagination and certain to challenge for this title this year. Boo Weekley 2pts E/W Sporting bet for a place for a gifted golfer who is so unassuming. If he wins he probably wont realise its magnitude just plays the game for fun. Has everything required to make a top 5 or t6 finish

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Just adding two more value bets at silly odds, to add to mcdowell, before i get down to studying the vast array of match bets for the week, and tomorrows 3 balls. Oosthuizen 380@ betfair This young south african is a player on the up. A great start to the year with 4 top tens on the euro tour and a very good t20 finish at the wgc-ca last month finishing on -9. He is also very long of the tee which can be crucial, so im hoping he can keep in play a bit more this week than his stats suggest. Being his debut it will be tough, But im confident the world no 51 can go well this week like so many off his fellow countrymen have in the past. Sterne 660@ betfair Another young south african on the up. Also a great start to the season for sterne, with 2 wins a t10 and a t20 to his name. Sterne is also a very big hitter but has the accuracy to match which is a massive plus. He made his debut last year with a very creditable t25 with four steady rounds so im looking for the world no56 to build on that impressive debut and go well this week at ridicoulous odds.:hope

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Fantastic work in here so far chaps. The analysis is excellent and I really like the stats that Jonesy has provided. A couple of speculative ones for me: 1st Round Leader - Justin Rose @ 51 I believe Rose has been leader or co-leader after round 1 on three previous occasions at the Masters, including the last two years. At these odds, why wouldn't you have a crack? Lowest Round Score of Tournament - Camillo Villegas @ 51.00 I'm not a big follower of golf, but whenever I check the scorecards, Villegas always seems to be having 18 holes of great golf. 63 at the Buick, 66 at the Mercedes this year, plus a really strong round in the British last year where I think this bet would have won. My golfing knowledge isn't great but instinctively I still feel that this one is very strong.

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April I'm not a huge golf fan but I like the big tournaments and I am looking forward to watching this, Gonna have a few bets on Mahan. 2pts e/w Hunter Mahan Top US Golfer w/o Woods @ 25/1 Totesport 4 places 1/4 2pts e/w Hunter Mahan w/o Woods @ 55/1 Paddy Power 4 places 1/4 1pt e/w Hunter Mahan @ 100/1 Coral 5 places 1/4 I heard some good things about this golfer before the Ryder Cup and he performed really well in that finishing the top US golfer, has not gone onto anything great since that but I think he is quite a solid golfer and has the ability to go on and win a major at some point in his career.

Re: The Masters Golf Tournament 2009 - Thurs 9th April - Sun 12th April Thanks Crouch! I can't wait for this to start!!! March / April time for Sport is always the best time of year - Cheltenham, The Grand National, The Masters and the run in for the Football Season... What would we do without great Sporting events :ok
