Buying a Greyhound

Recommended Posts

Re: Buying a Greyhound Alright Chris. I am part of a greyhound syndicate which we started up ourselves. We're in a lucky position as the guy who set it up is a bit of a greyhound follower and lives and breaths greyhounds etc. Anyway, we have taken the (potentially) morre risky route with our greyhounds as we have purchased them as pups. We have made a fantastic contact in Scotland though as the trainer of our pups is highly regarded and has outstanding facilities (namely Graham Hutt from Kinross). The pup's we purchased from him are very well bred and certainly look the business - we purchased from 2 separate litters - both pups were very reasonably priced based on other prices we encountered when searching the classifieds on the Greyhound data website. This is probably the least expensive way in but highest risk as there are no guarantees that once ready to race your dog will chase and even if it does you don't know how good it will actually be. The optimistic outlook with buying a pup at this stage is though that it could obviously be a very good dog. We have high hopes (that our dogs will perform to a reasonable standard) based on the attention and treatment they are receiving from the kennel. The other route to purchasing a dog is to buy one that has been schooled and trialled or that has already competed at a certain grade. With this it is more expensive but you are guaranteed a dog that will perform at a certain level. Downside of this is that it is unlikely to ever race at a the highest grades as to buy an open class dog you would have to pay a fair whack of cash. You are unlucky that I am not the most informed in the syndicate but I will gladly answer any questions I can mate. If more specific info is required I am sure my mate who set up our syndicate would gladly have a chat with you as he loves talking greyhounds! We have been going for about 1 year and have 7 syndicate members. Hope this wee bit of info helps.
