Place questions

Just a couple of quick questions i need answering. does the place payout differ (1/4 1/5 etc) depending on the type of race, if so which races pay what, or is it down to which bookie you use? Secondly, how many runners are required to pay each place and does this alter with the type of race? Thanks W.
