The Israeli Poker Association has announced that it received an official go-ahead from the police to hold the national poker championship for 2007. As stated, the national poker championship was supposed to be held in January 2007 at the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />ExhibitionCenter in Tel Aviv. Shortly before the scheduled time of the tournament, however, Israel Police announced a ban on holding the tournament, basing its ban on the claim that poker was a game of luck. In light of the police's surprising announcement, the Israeli Poker Association turned to lawyers Vered Cohen and Raanan Ben-Or, and asked them to take legal action in order to receive approval for holding the tournament. The lawyers turned to Professor Ehud Lehrer, who is Head of the Department of Statistics at the University of Tel Aviv, and asked him to give an opinion on the significance of the factor of luck in the game of poker. Professor Lehrer researched the issue in an in-depth manner and eventually submitted an unequivocal opinion according to which "knowledge, understanding, and ability all have a decisive influence on the player's chance to advance and win during the tournament. Thus, the outcome of the tournament is unequivocally more dependent on knowledge, understanding and ability than luck." Professor Lehrer added that in his opinion, "players in the tournament are required to set and change their game strategies throughout the entire game, while carrying out a mathematical, logistic, and psychological analysis of the progress and nature of the game in opposition to the other players around the table." In light of Professor Lehrer unequivical findings, the Israeli Poker Association decided to again turn to the police with the research findings. The police and the District Attorney's Office decided to allow the tournament to go ahead in light of the new findings brought before them.
