Grand National horse by horse guide 1. Hedgehunter 117745.GIF Winner in 2005 and gallant second off top-weight last year. Has had his problems this season but comes here fresher than he has before and another bold run is expected. Supporters will get a great run for their money and could easily make the frame again. 2. Eurotrek 411.GIF The main representative of champion trainer Paul Nicholls, he has been trained for this race since winning over the National fences in November. There have been doubts over his fragile state, yet he has done the hard part if he lines up and is classy enough to cope with a big weight. 3. L'ami 3449.GIF The only horse to get near the great Kauto Star this year, he bids to provide soon-to-be 12 time champion jockey Tony McCoy with a first Grand National. A consistent performer at the highest level, however, he hasn't won in 14 races since January 2005. 4. Monkerhostin 530.GIF Exceptionally tough and versatile over the last few seasons, he has been kept fresh this year and should relish the challenge of the National fences. Has mixed it with the best but may find his stamina running out over 4 and a half miles. 5. Thisthatandtother 303.GIF Has won some big races over the years, yet has seemed to lack the same sparkle since his comeback from injury. Possible that the fences will reignite the fire within, however has a big weight and major stamina doubts. 6. Billyvoddan 42.GIF Posted a career-best when third at Cheltenham last time and is sure to run faster and jump better than most. Will provide supporters with a rollercoaster ride, and if he can save some stamina for the finish he could be thereabouts. 7. Numbersixvalverde 88129.GIF Last year's winner has arguably improved since his famous triumph, and the memory of his victory will be fresh in many people's minds. Has to carry 9lb more but is sure to put up a bold bid to become the first horse since Red Rum to win back-to-back Nationals. 8. Idle Talk 5821.GIF Bidding to give the McCain family another National triumph, he has a big engine and is capable of putting up a bold show. Still lightly raced, if he can eliminate the jumping errors that have cost him recently there is a big race within his grasp. 9. Royal Auclair 3424.GIF Second in this race in 2005 but fell at the first fence last year. Has many miles on the clock and it could be that age is starting to catch up with him, but has shown he can reach the frame and cannot be dismissed. 10. Cloudy Bays 57362.GIF A decent horse two years ago, he has not looked the same since returning from injury. Fell in a hurdle race last time out, he looks to have too much weight even if he rediscovered his old form. 11. Knowhere 239.GIF Talented novice who was only a length behind subsequent Gold Cup runner-up Exotic Dancer in November. Jumping can be a bit hairy but has the ability to make his presence felt if he can get around. 12. Kelami 4.GIF French raider has proven he can win big races and ran really well on his comeback this year. Will be ridden by Mick Fitzgerald hoping for a victory in what could be his last Grand National. Great each-way chance. 13. Point Barrow 47447.GIF Fits all the trends of recent winners, he won an Irish Grand National off top weight last year and has been trained with this race in mind. Able to perform on any ground, there are no stamina doubts and he looks sure to be involved at the finish. 14. Celtic Son 191.GIF Once touted as a potential superstar, he has lost his way recently and will probably not fancy sustaining an effort for over four miles. 15. Simon 46446.GIF Has won his last two races in really good style, and is unpenalised from last win ploughing through the mud. Still improving, he represents a great each-way bet, and would be a popular winner for his grande dame owner. 16. Ballycassidy 2193.GIF Ran a stormer in this race last year, leading the field for most of the way before being unlucky to fall while still tanking along. Has not been in the same form this season but is sure to relish the challenge again at a big price. 17. Clan Royal 105344.GIF Race specialist who was unlucky in 2005 and has a second and third place to his name. Clearly loves to jump around Aintree and no surprise to see him in contention again, although his chance to win may have gone. 18. Gallant Approach 47464.GIF Does not have many miles on the clock and may well improve for the step up to an extreme distance, yet looks high enough in the weights to search elsewhere for contenders. 19. Livingstonebramble 20961.GIF Has run some respectable races in Ireland this season without managing to get his head in front, but stamina must be a doubt and the stable has more fancied runners. 20. Dun Doire 87647.GIF Won six races in a row last season culminating at the Cheltenham Festival. Fell over the National fences in November but has been laid out for this race by his trainer and is well fancied by many shrewd judges, however may be lacking for speed. 21. Kandjar D'Allier 27553.GIF The grey represents a top class trainer-jockey combination that have plundered several big races this season, and he won a good trial in gutsy fashion in December. That race may have left its mark however and his stamina is not assured. 22. Slim Pickings 128534.GIF Dark horse who has been backed in from huge prices recently and looking through his best form it is easy to see why. Jumping not always too fluent but if he can stay on his feet and handle a large step up in distance he may have a real chance. 23. Zabenz 118315.GIF Has won races in Australia and America during his career and plenty of good efforts in this country. Stamina should not be a problem, indeed he possesses it in adundance and could do with a dash of speed. 24. Bewleys Berry 49525.GIF Has always been well regarded and seems most likely to fulfill his potential in this race. Good second to Eurotrek in November and a real test of stamina and jumping may bring out the best in him. 25. Longshanks 2325.GIF Twice placed over the big fences looking like this longer trip would suit. Run only once this season but it was a comfortable victory and has solid prospects of finishing in the money. 26. Bothar Na 94319.GIF Has not been seen since November but this race has been the plan for a long time. Jumped well over the fences before, will like the ground and given a favourable mention by his trainer, who holds a strong hand. Stamina may be a worry. 27. Graphic Approach 53804.GIF Was on an upward curve last season that seems to have flattened out this year. A chance that he will improve for the step up in distance but may simply be clutching at straws. 28. Homer Wells 65899.GIF Beat Point Barrow, Numbersixvalverde and Jack High in Ireland last time out and is still improving. If he can prove as effective on better ground he will have an excellent chance of playing a part in the finish. 29. Liberthine 2414.GIF The only mare in the field and a worthy representative. Won over the course last year and gets on well with her amateur jockey. Another with stamina issues but every chance she will rise to the big occasion. 30. Silver Birch 76326.GIF Former Welsh Grand National winner who fell in this race last year. Has enjoyed himself on the Cross Country circuit recently but chances are he no longer possesses the pace to keep up with the leaders on good ground. 31. Philson Run 47641.GIF Another slow boat who is likely to be outpaced early before picking off stragglers. Has proven he has the ability to win big staying chases and is lightly raced this season but could do with an extra mile or two. 32. Puntal 34491.GIF Quirky character who seemed to have given up on racing until running a blinder at 150/1 in the 2005 National. Sixth last year and sure to enjoy himself once more but his exuberence will likely be his downfall. 33. The Outlier 49122.GIF Pulled up in his last two starts offers little in the way of encouragement and chances are this grey would require a Foinavon-style mishap to get competitive. 34. Tikram 2270.GIF Performed over a variety of trips and conditions over the years yet this is his first effort at the big fences. Not without talent and could take to the challenge, yet unlikely to last home. 35. Mckelvey 27021.GIF Has ticks in all the right boxes, having proven his stamina, success last time out in a trial and with a good run over the fences under his belt. With a low weight and a talented young jockey on board he has solid credentials to get in the money. 36. Naunton Brook 2330.GIF Front runner who will be in the vanguard as they cross the Melling Road, yet this enthusiasm will be tempered when he realises he has to go round again. Likely he will plod on valiently. 37. Jack High 60222.GIF Has been well fancied for this race before and mixed it with several of the favourites last time out. Amberleigh House managed to win the race at 12 years of age yet Jack looks unlikely to reach those heights. 38. Sonevafushi 2473.GIF The target of plenty of abuse over the years as his stomach for a battle has been called into question. This is slightly unfair however, and on a going day he is not without ability, yet will struggle to get into the position to throw the race away. 39. Joes Edge 23182.GIF Backed in from 50/1 to head the market after a last-gasp success at Cheltenham. Also a former Scottish National winner, he can improve on last year's seventh place with a lighter weight and better ground, and looks a big danger to all. 40. Le Duc 555.GIF Possesses his own ideas about the game but ran credibly last time out. Has jumped these fences well before and it seems to bring out the best in him. Is no forlorn hope and could run into a place. Football-Tipper Taken from oddschecker :clap
