swampster
Right, had a brainwave. I'm thinking of doing a trek down the Great Wall of China next year for charity, probably for one of the cancer charities. Now, if I could get a few fellow poker players to come with me, how about a POKER trek across the great Wall, a day's walking stopping off along the way for a quick STT. We could bring a fold up table, small set of chips, fold-up fishing stools etc, get one of the poker companies to sponsor, I could get a magazine interested, all in all would be a top laugh and a chance to raise a ton of cash for a good cause. Cancer Research has places running out for 2007 but Marie Curie Trust has places for September 2007 if we were to do an organized trek (although reg. fees and min.sponsorship are high) or organize it ourselves. Thoughts ? http://www.mariecurie.org.uk/events/overseas_challenges/greatwallofchinatrekchina/ http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Getinvolved/Events/Overseaschallenge/ChinaTrek http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/challenges/destinations/asia/greatwallchallenge/?version=
Belly77
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? Good luck with this swampster. Which ever charity you choose will be worthy of the money. However can I also throw the MacMillan cancer trust into the ring. I’m running the marathon next year for the MacMillan Cancer Trust. My mum works for the St Calres hospice http://www.stclare-hospice.co.uk/. They offer fantastic care and support to the patients and families of cancer victims and the terminally ill. It’s essentially caring for the dying as they tend to treat the more severe cases of the disease. The hospice is funded on a charity basis so every penny really counts. I trecked across Gautemala for the same charity a few years ago. I can honestly say it was a life changing experience. Hope you can drum up some interest. http://www.justgiving.com/macmillan/raisemoney/

swampster
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? their 2007 trek is full up it seems, but i'm wondering how much of a hassle it would be to organise my own.
msaban
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? Good Luck with it, I walked 40 odd miles earlier in the year for charity, had to complete it within 24 hours, across farmers fields and all that, very few flat paths/roads, ok maybe I should have done a little training and had a little sleep rather than going straight from work to playing poker to walking almost 24hrs later, but felt very pround when I finished after about 15 hours despite twisting my knee.If you complete it, it woud be a fantastic achievement, may take a day or two mind :)
Pocket Lady
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? You ought to get hold of Dacey or Dave, I bet Hilly fish on tour might be interested. A few PLers have mentioned on this thread that would like to go to the Great Wall of China: http://www.punterslounge.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37913 It would be great publicity for them and a great laugh as they are cracking blokes too (watch out for Dacey's monster strop if you bad beat him though :tongue2 ;)). Valiant23
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? Swampster, if you're serious about doing this then why not get InterPoker to sponsor you? I think they run the Extreme Poker Championships. I know walking the Great Wall isn't as extreme as playing poker in Antartica or in a plane where losers get thrown out, but they still may be interested. :ok
daftpegasus
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? Swampster My wife works in this field and was telling me a few weeks ago about a number of different charities who organise these specialist sponsered events. If the Great Wall 2007 one is full she might be able to point you in the right direction of some other ones that aren't. It's the type of thing I'd love to do but with 2 young kids I fear it would be unfair on my family.

daftpegasus
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? brilliant - any help gratefully received Sorry Swampster Been very busy lately but finally found the information I was looking for. http://www.rosemere.org.uk/globaladventure.php gives a list of all the global ones but I also note on a different page of their website that you could do a marathon/half marathon next December in Vegas! daftpegasus
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? Bollox - have just re read the pages and noticed that all these events are for 2006. Still there is a contact email address at the top of the page who must know the schedule for 2007.
Burnley Joe
Re: Anyone fancy a little stroll ?? Mate once you have more info let me know as i`d be more than interested. As some of you are aware, 4 days after my wife had our son last year she was diagniosed with bone cancer. thanksfully the operation was a success, although she still has times where she is in pain where she had the op on her arm, so if you are doing it for any cancer Charity we would be definatly up for it.
