What makes a Football Team a good bet?

Recommended Posts

I am only recently new to this forum and have enjoyed reading and learning what I can from all the knowledgable punters in here. I wanted to put up for discussion "What makes a Football Team a good bet?". I have not been betting on soccer for that long and I don't use a system as such, more a set of guidelines to stop me making the same mistakes again. I was often backing teams/games with poor form/records in the hope of winning, so decided to apply a form of strategy to stop me doing so. Some of those guidelines I use to avoid pitfalls are;

  1. Any team i bet on must have a For/Against record of around +20%. E.G. Goals for = 20 then Goals against must be 16 or less. This means I am only betting on teams who are more consistent and generally higher up the table, and a team that scores more goals than it concedes has to be a better betting proposition in my mind. It stops me backing inconsistent teams who might win, but generally don't.
  2. I believe current/recent form is a relevant factor in picking a team to bet on, and I don't back any team that has lost it's last 3 games as I believe winning form is good form. Winners defy excuses and losers always seem to have an excuse.
  3. The past in all reality does not predict the future, but I find many teams have predictable form patterns when playing certain teams, so I look at previous history to some extent when studying a game to see if there is an angle to be had.
  4. I prefer to back teams playing at home that have a good home record, especially against the team they are playing today, but there is always value to be had in backing teams away when things are in their favour.

I look at a game and can quickly determine whether I will bet on the game or not, simply by eliminating the pitfalls I have mentioned. There are so many soccer games to bet on every day, if one game is not bettable, the next game might be. There will always be another game to bet on, it all depends on if there is any money left to bet on it. :loon So I was hoping other learned punters in here might offer there thoughts on when you SHOULD back a team to win, and when you SHOULD NOT. I know I have much to learn and would appreciate any input and the combined replies may result in someone learning something new at least. Cheers! Beejay

Re: What makes a Football Team a good bet? Hello BJ, you say you don't have much experience but you are taking a methodical approach which I think is the first step to win something in betting. What results are you achieving with your strategy? Are you making consistent profits? I wish good luck and hope some of the more experienced punters that bet on soccer can give you some inputs.
