St Helens coach Daniel Anderson has named nine untried youngsters in his squad for the clash with the Catalans Dragons as he rests his star men for the Challenge Cup final. Anderson has included just four players who are likely to line up against Huddersfield at Twickenham on August 26 as he prepares to send out an unrecognisable team. Many were angered when former Saints coach Ian Millward fielded weakened teams before the Cup finals of 2002 and 2004 in a bid to preserve his key players for the showpiece occasion. However, as the Dragons cannot be relegated, only the Saints' quest for the League Leaders' Shield will be jeopardised by Anderson's selection. "We have five players who genuinely can't play and a couple are due a rest," said Anderson, defending his decision. "But the bottom line is we have a blue riband event on Saturday week. "If we were in the UK it would be different, but travel does take it out of you and there is the heightened security at the moment and an outside chance of delays and cancellations on flights. "I owe it to the St Helens club and our fans that we are at our best, physically and mentally, for this game." Stand-off Craig Ashall, 19, second rower Steven Bannister, 18, winger Gareth Langley, 21, prop Paul Leyland, 20, centre Craig Littler, 20, winger Dean McGilivray, 18, back rower Neil Rigby, 20, utility forward Sam Thompson, 19 and loose forward Ian Webster, 19, are all in line for debuts in France. Hooker Tommy Hodgkinson, 36, who last played for the club 12 years ago and resigned this year in a coaching role with the academy, has also been named in the squad. Hodgkinson takes the place of Keiron Cunningham, who will miss his first Saints game since September 2004.
