Re: Mlb 8/14 Gonna keep on riding the Mets, Dodgers and A's. My picks today are: Dodgers (ML & RL) LA traveled to Miami just over a week ago and the Marlins were more than gracious hosts. LA swept the 3-game series by a combined score of 23-7. The Dodgers have since returned home as the class of the previously classless NL West. Derek Lowe beat Florida on August 4 then started in L.A.’s only August loss. He looked strong in both starts, however, and just ended up on the wrong end of a Jeff Francis gem. The Marlins have lost the last two road starts by Dontrelle Willis by wide margins, with the lefty ace allowing 21 baserunners in only 7 2/3 combined innings. Mets The Mets have won 5 of their last 6 meetings with the Phillies, including a 3-game sweep June 13-15 at Philadelphia. New York Mets ace Pedro Martinez looks to remain undefeated since coming off the DL. Martinez is 2-0 with a 3.26 ERA and a .179 opponent batting average in three starts since he spent a month on the DL. Padres The Giants are in shambles. After last night’s extra-inning loss to the Dodgers, San Francisco manager Felipe Alou reflected on his team’s July 23 loss to the Padres. That was also the night the Giants coughed up their brief lead on the NL West. “That was a momentum killer,” Alou told The San Francisco Chronicle. “That was the beginning of the killer losing streak. Things have never been the same… Everything was happening, saves, coming from behind, walk-offs. After that, everything died.” Brad Hennessey pitched well in his last start for the G-men. Unfortunately that was back on July 1, a different era as far as today’s Giants are concerned. Clay Hensley takes the hill for the hometown Padres, hoping to feed off Sunday’s Woody Williams win against the Astros. “It`s weird with this team,” Williams told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “It`s like they see a couple of guys succeed and go, `Hey, I can do this, too.` It starts clicking.” A's Even A's manager Ken Macha doesn't have an explanation for his team's ability to consistently beat the Seattle Mariners this season. The AL West-leading Athletics look to make it 13 straight against the Mariners. Since the Mariners defeated the A's 6-2 on April 6, Oakland has won every matchup since en route to its longest winning steak against one team in team history. "It's inexplicable. They have good players, a good manager and a pretty good closer. You take out the 12 and they have a good record. It's hard to explain," Macha said. Zito has dominated Seattle. He's 6-0 with a 3.43 ERA in 12 starts against the Mariners since losing to them in July 2003--3 years!!! Seattle also has found it nearly impossible to score against him in Zito's last four starts. He's 4-0 with an 0.67 ERA in that span, giving up just two earned runs in 22 innings.
