Football-Tipper
Betting enthusiasts - perfect your poker face or appear royally flushed! A poker tournament is coming to a venue near you - and its scale is unprecedented in the Grimsby area. More than a dozen local pubs have signed up to the charity event, which offers an incredible top prize of a place at the Las Vegas World Series Poker Tournament. The greatest gambler will receive fully-paid accommodation for two nights at the US resort. Each pub will host its own mini-tournament, with punters paying £20 in return for 3,000 worth of American chips. The top eight from the tour will then battle it out in a play-off, with the runner-up and winner progressing to the final at a venue to be confirmed. And the victor will scoop the once-in-a-lifetime prize. Grimsby organiser Kriss Moore (35) thinks there is a huge appetite for poker in the area. He said: "We put on a night at the Oaklands Hotel, with the expectation of 55 people turning up. But to our amazement, 114 came through the doors to play. Then we knew we were on to a winner." Despite strict laws governing the operation of tournaments, this has got the go-ahead due to its charity status. Each pub can nominate its own charity. "There is no cash on the tables - it is a charity night essentially." Poker has undergone a big rise in popularity with increased coverage from TV stations. "It's because the game appeals to all kinds of age groups. It does not have to be for serious money," said Mr Moore. The first event takes place at The Litten Tree, Market Place, Grimsby, on April 16.
