And I agree with you about the (partial) treble being the theoretical source of the extra yield, considering the bet as a whole. But in practical terms as I said you can't stake 1/b on the ABC treble as you don't know b from the offset. So in practical terms the yield comes from "somewhere" else. The point is that given two correct in a row there is some spare cash floating around that can be bet on match C (whether you call it part of a treble, or a free double).
