Connection Problems

I've decided to take the plunge and start some online poker, however, I have been unable to connect to any of the servers. I've tried party, bet365, billyhills and betfair and although I've been able to download the software I've been unable to connect. I got the following message from party:- We use TCP protocol and the ports 2047, 2147 for communication. Please ask your network administrator or the person in charge of maintaining firewall configuration to open up these ports for outgoing and incoming traffic or allow the application to access internet. It means very little to me. Any ideas as to what I need to do, I'm eager to start losing my money!
