Finishing speeds.

Recommended Posts

The number one factor in my opinion of why a horse wins a race is the finishing speed over the last two furlongs, watch any race and you can get the winner from the horse that clearly breaks out, are there any stats which have this information? The top speed info in the racing post is helpful but doesnt tell the whole story, what is need is similar to greyhound racing, split times?

Re: Finishing speeds. That's what everyone has said for years. The USA has it, and I think South Africa and Australia too. It would be very helpful to record and publish sectional timings. As you say it tells the story of how a horse goes through its gears. But change isn't welcomed by the current powers-that-be of British racing... ...so don't expect the development to come anytime soon! Some people keep their own hand-timed records. Never something I feel I'll ever have the time to do!
