sarah07
After his victory in the Group III Geoffrey Freer Stakes (1m5-1/2f) at Newbury on Saturday, Mount Athos is scheduled to travel to Australia for the Melbourne Cup. The son of Montjeu ran fifth of the six runners before making an excellent turn of foot with the help of his rider Ryan Moore to record a 3-1/4 lengths over Caulfield Cup nominee Brown Panther. European trainer Luca Cumani said Mount Athos would go into quarantine next month in preparation for his Australian stint. "I talked to Ryan Moore, who seemed very happy and thought the horse picked up nicely,†Cumani told the Press Association. "The plan is to go for the Melbourne Cup. "After this, I would think he will go up to 53.5 kilograms, which is the same as one of our other hopes for the race, Quest For Peace. "The plan is for him to go into quarantine for two weeks starting on September 12, then travel to Australia on September 27 or 28." The galloper is set as $17 favourite in the Melbourne Cup by the IASbet.
