Re: Just Started horse race betting!! Can someone help! Hi Allan :welcome Plenty of systems on here but I'm sure you know that. If you've not been in the sticky thread, Horse Racing Glossary/Q&A in the main racing forum have a look in there, plenty of good stuff about all aspects of racing & is a good read for someone just starting out. Most systems are based around one or a combination of the following factors. 1. Favourites or the betting forecast For example it may be that the favourite is showing a profit in certain types of races at certain tracks. 2. Various interpretations of form. I used to have one of these donkeys years ago where if a horse won a handicap race & it said "Soon clear" in the form you used to back it next time it ran, it did throw up some nice winners from time to time but not loads & these days the handicapper tends to wack these sorts with a big weight rise. 3. Weight Top weight in a Nursery (2yo handicap) was an old favourite for an example. 4. Tipster selections Newspaper tipsters naps (best bet) or Pricewise from the Racing Post, phone tipsters & internet tips, the list is almost endless & most are worthless & expensive, plenty of good tipsters on here for free. 5. Form and/or time ratings Racing Post Ratings & their Topspeed ratings you can see for free on the Post website for the days racing but other things you have to pay for. There are also the commercial ratings services such as Timeform which as been going over 60 years & is well respected but not cheap, others are also not cheap & bloody useless. 6. Following a trainer or jockey Again you can back a trainers runners in certain types of races or at particular tracks. There are also staking systems some of which are so daft & can get you in such bother it's unbelievable, try to stick to level stakes or back to win a set amount each bet depending on the price, for example you want to return 100pts, at 3/1 you stake 25 & get 100 back, at 10/1 stake 9 returns 99, it doesn't have to be exact. If I were you I would specialise in a certain area that you think you may like, I tend to go for the better class races both on the flat & over jumps, there's usually plenty of form to go at in these races & you can give them proper time & even if you don't bet the race will give plenty of clues for future events. Enough rambling, Rio.
