chasergirl
Interesting thoughts from Roger Hart on XXXXXXX Weighed In show. He speaks about looking after the established race goers rather than getting too obsessive about a new generation of customer. I personally, think racing will find a sensible level whereby traditional approach to racing is balanced with some innovative ideas from the likes of racing for change. I did enjoy the strictly come dancing piece. Great sport the guy from Love the Races. :D
oldjohn69
Re: racing for change Racing for change....from the betting shop angle. My local Totesport staff are constantly tell me that if it were not for the profit made from gaming machines there would not be any betting shops left within 5 years ! My retort was that it would drive off course betting back underground where it came from in the immediate post war years. I wonder if the big time players are aware of the value of the off course market when you consider that without the millions of betting shop punters:crythe market would be weak and uncompetitive. Without the first SIS pictures it would never have encouraged me to go to so many racecourses in the first place. I would say to the RFC people that they should never underestimate the vital role betting shops play in promoting the sport as both a hobby and a betting medium. I feel that the thing which threatens the future of horse racing is that those with influence and therefore the most valued opinions tend to be (in no particular order) ... those employed in the industry, bookmakers, and the various administrators. If racing is to attract more customers it needs to seriously re-assess how it plans to draw in the people from outside the sport as racegoers and I believe that the overwhelming majority of these will start with a visit to the betting shop. If the attraction is the gaming machine then we will recruit casino goers and not racegoers. If there is a plus side to gaming machines it is that the chances of a return are fairly consistent if somewhat unpredictable. In contrast horse racing punters get a lousy deal without any of the bonus offers of the bigger credit account punter. Start treating us better or all betting shops will do is acquire a generation of roulette and blacjack customers.:@
