  1. Re: Snooker: World Championships I think the Higgins v O'Sullivan match is one that is best watched without a bet attached. Good arguments can be made for backing both players. O'Sullivan saw off a very determined Shaun Murphy, and it can be said that Higgins struggled somewhat to put (an also very determined) Rory McLeod away - which would lead you to backing O'Sullivan. The danger of doing so is that O'Sullivan is highly predictable, and can go to sleep during matches. It is said that O'Sullivan is untouchable when on his game - I personally think the only player that can give him a game in that mood is John Higgins. Higgins still has a point to prove here, winning the world title will help to heal the wounds of last year's controversy, and this tournament is all about getting through the rounds, not about blitzing through the first couple of matches and being knackered for when thr longer games come. So sit back, keep the powder dry and hopefully enjoy the best match of this year's championship do far. :ok

  2. Re: Golf: US Masters 2011 Everyone loves the Masters, and with Sky taking over coverage this year I am assuming that means more hours of viewing pleasure. In theory this should be the easiest Major to pick the winner - as its played on the same course each year, its a restricted field of less than 100 runners, of which at least 10 percent are made up of amateurs and has-been ex-champs (no disrespect intended), as Hornet has pointed out in his excellent post, there are a number of rules that (most) winners obey in order to get their hands on the Green Jacket. Of them I am a bigger believer in course form. This website is pretty good for year on year comparisons: http://www.golfobserver.com/golfstats.php?c=283 I am often guilty of applying a scatter gun approach to the Majors and having more bets than I should, but I am going for just one bet this year: Nick Watney bt Martin Kaymer @ 4/5 (Totesport) Watney is a quality player and scores highly when applying the 'Hornet Criteria'. Kaymer is undoubtedly a great player, and also ticks many of the boxes, but 3 missed cuts at Augusta in the last three years, opposed to 3 top-20 finishes for the American makes this appear to be a mismatch in my view

  3. Have seen this market on BlueSq When Will A British Player Next Win A Major ? Masters 2010 4/1 US Open 2010 7/1 Open Championship 2010 4/1 USPGA 2010 6/1 Not By 2011 evens i have also checked win them that Republic of Ireland players do not count (I know it should be obvious but always better to check first). Unless I have missed something the last British player to win a Major was Paul Lawrie in 1999 when he won the British Open. Even money seems a very big price to me. I know that Rory McIlroy is the new darling and he performed heroically last year, but will he win one this year? Lee Westwood is playing well, but he has yet to convert any of his opportunities in last 10 plus years. Luke Donald looks unlikely to fulfil his massive potential. i have already had a go, but am contemplating wading in - but would like to hear the opinions of others on here first.

  4. Re: Golf: USPGA Championship 2009

well done yang! my predicyion about woods not winning and not being at his best was correct and was right to lay him. pity i dont bet each way as my win prediction' date=' westwood was placed. i think this is a bigger blow to tiger than just losing a major. i now think he,ll never get back to his best and now he knows and the other pros now he can be caught when leading is a big dent to his confidence. i thought he would overhall the major record, but now think its iffy. theres alot of young and older talented golfers out there who will now stop woods doing this! no doubt he stil is the best, but not as good as once was and i wont be taking any less than 5/1 again on him beating a high class field again.[/quote'] IMHO this is a bit of an overreaction that I cannot see the bookies sharing. To tackle the last bit first - you will not be backing Tiger for a long time, if you are waiting for 5/1+ on the guy. I think there will be a few more years of 9/4fav or lower. Tiger had an absolutely fabulous record of 14 from 14 - but lets be fair there was always going to come a point at which that was going to come to an end. One cold day (or couple of days) with the putter does not spell the end for Woods - and that is taking nothing away from Yang's performance. I agree with you that other player's will see him as beatable, but rather than destroying Tiger i think it can drive him on to greater things. Obviously time will tell whether he cracks the 18 or not - but I dont think we have seen the last of him steam rollering fields. Its one thing knowing a man can be beaten - its another thing stepping up and being the man who does it. :ok
  5. Re: Snooker: World Championships 2009 I am having a dreadful WC this year, it seems the opposite of what i think ends up happening! So Fu v Murphy, I was looking to back Fu, but cannot really make much of a case for backing him at Evens - I really was expecting at least 6/4. This is a long Championship and as long as you do enough to get through there is time to play your way into form. I wish you the very best with the Fu selection, but i will not be backing him.

  6. Re: The Official PL Big Brother Thread.. LOL - each to his own I say. I must confess i find myself drawn in each year and end up watching much more than I intend to. I think this season has been fairly entertaining so far, but the show has evolved, I feel the highlights shown on Ch4 are edited with an agenda in mind each night, rather than in the early series where it was more a record of what had happended since the last show.

  7. Re: golf - british seniors open 2008 - troon How do they set these courses up for the Senior events? I know that plenty of these guys have decent Open records in the past, like Norman, Watson et al, but does some of this experience get negated by the course set up? I seem to remember Scott Hoch having some terrible times at our Open championship so wondered whether the Senior version was less severe.

  8. Re: Earning a living gambling Easy or hard???? Excuse my ignorance, i don't bet on horses but was intruiged by the thread title! Wouldn't a selective process be more productive to 'making a living', you cannot possibly hope to get the winner of each race, even if picking more than one selection in the race. This also sits alongside employing a staking plan, otherwise you will find yourself doing your money on races where you are in effect picking a horse for the sake of it. The newspaper tipsters only pick one in every race because they are paid to do so, not because they are backing them all. good luck :ok

  9. I am an occasional player now but had a game last night, in one of those double or nothing STT’s where top 5 get paid, there are six of us left.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    UTG 5,000+

    UTG+1 900

    CO 900

    B 700

    SB 1300

    BB 1200

I am the BB, blinds are 75/150 and I get dealt QQ.

UTG+1 raises to 300, CO calls, folded round to me.

    I push, they both call.

(They have A10 and A8 or something like that, and make a straight on the turn or river, so I am out in 6th)

I am sure I did the right thing for a normal STT, but in this situation should I have done anything differently because of the flat payout structure?

  10. Re: Golf: The Open , 2008 Paddy Power are going ew 1/4 first 7 Sportingbet go ew 1/4 first 5 - but will pay ties in full - think thisis a decent concession - nothing more annoying than cheering your player getting a birdie on the 72nd only to find he share 5th with 8 others and you don't even cover your stake!!

  11. Re: The Open , 2008 Am looking forward to the Open this week, and as usual most of my financial interests will no doubt be over by Friday evening. As yet I haven't spend a great deal of time looking, but I couldn't resist a look at Lee Westwood's form in the Open. He is a good player, and arguably playing as well now as ever, but this lot leads to believe he might be better opposed in 72 hole matches than backed to win the Jug, at a rather skinny looking 14/1: 2007 35th 2006 31st 2005 MC 2004 4th 2003 MC 2002 MC 2001 47th 2000 64th 1999 18th 1998 62nd 1997 10 1996 MC 1995 93rd

  12. Re: Rugby League: Super League XIII - Round 19, NL & France vs England Yves - buying and selling are spread betting erms. If you 'sell' points then you are betting on the points total being under the amount quoted (in this case less than 49) - the amount you win is your stake multiplied by the number of points comes in under the quote. The downside is that you lose a stake for each point the total goes over the value you sold at. Buying points is the opposite - you are betting on the points being over the quote.

  13. Re: Gaf's Leaving Do Freeroll - Friday 8pm on Virgin I don't presume to qualify on the active front, so am not posting in order to gain entrance, but just to wish GaF good luck in his sabbatical, and hope he has some solid plans, because if he isn't going to be on PL or playing poker then he is going to have some serious time on his hands. Good luck.
