  1. Re: Laying down AA first hand

I've no doubt that the right thing to do is to call - but' date=' I've also no doubt that under this set of circumstances my balls would shrink to the size of peanuts and I'd fold :$ and then regret it for the 10 minutes I'm still in the tourney.[/quote'] That response sums up the feeling of anyone who would fold imo. Youre basically just feared out about it getting cracked and thats influencing your decision. The last part just confirms it when 'im still in the tourny' is mentioned, a very nice proportion of the time you will still be in the tourny by calling too remember! I cant see any rational explanation for a fold. It seems to be along the lines of 'I want to get value for my money' or 'I dont want to play for just 1 hand' etc etc. Does it not occur that 80% of the time (lets say opponent has a pocket pair) you will get a lot more likely playing time by calling as you will win and have a huge stack?
  2. Re: I'm turning pro for a week !

Big Slick in Purley tonight for a £10 rebuy - think I may have to hit the cash tables this week if I've any hope of making a profit.....
Did you go to BigSlick mate? I was dealing that night so good chance I may have dealt you in. Did you see that old beardy foreign dude get narky? :lol
  3. Re: Laying down AA first hand

Said it before, I would fold. Assuming its a ten seater table your just less than 70% best with 2 live Aces, with 2 dead Aces (and you never know) your less than 60% and this is against 89s, so not far of a coin flip
    Wtf
  4. Re: Laying down AA first hand If your playing sound poker you shouldnt fold it 100% call. I have only scanned the thread but no 'pro' player would fold either (people seemed to think they might for some reason). Let the good times roll people, youll be shipping it most of the time.

  5. Re: Just folded AA preflop ...

I've got to say there is no way i would have lay down aa, my philosophy is if you reckon you are in front then get them in and as you have the nuts at this point i need say no more.
It does make a difference in this type of tourny. By this reckoning youd call even if 5 players were all in already. You qualify by not getting involved by default, its definitely a mistake to play AA there. For instance I 100% believe calling with KK would be a mistake in this hand Slapdash is talking about. Id think I had the best hand but theres a very reasonable chance im getting knocked out, probably a good 40-45% chance of me getting sent packing.
  6. Re: Just folded AA preflop ... As it happens though with this particular situation I dont think there is much in it tbh. I think its a pretty much break even play whether you call or dont call. Id fold KK here for sure but AA hmm. Im not saying its a mistake to fold at all I certainly see the reasoning but I dont think its a big deal either way so id probably go ahead and call off the top of my head. If there was 1 less player remaining (so 7 players left, 5 qualify) I think its definitely good for a fold. If you call and win, you almost guarantee yourself qualification dont you. Not 100% but certainly 95% anyway being the chipleader with 6/7 remaining, thatd be very hard to mess up. If you didnt play a hand youd make it so its a more or less sure thing. So what are the chances of you calling with AA and winning? I believe it is somewhere around a 70% chance overall. If you are up against 2 other pocket pairs you are around 65% to win. If you are up against Ax and a pocket pair you are 70-75% to win the hand. If you are up against 2 lots of unpaired cards its around the same % as that. So I think we can probably agree on your chances of winning the hand with AA here are 70% roughly (and thus 70% of qualifying in the top 5 basically). So if you fold what are your chances of qualifying? We can assume that 1 player will probably be eliminated in this all in by you folding, so there probably will be 7 players left and you have an averageish stack, 5 qualify. Your chances here are certainly at least 65% but no better than 75%. I reckon its about the same chance, about 70% of you qualifying tbh. So yeah I dont think either calling or folding is incorrect. I just think calling is more assertive and you know youre in if you just win this 1 hand. Its a tight one for sure.

  7. Re: Big Slick Tuesday 23rd Jan Ahh yes dude I remember the KK hand actually! I was thinking hmmm A8 v KK dont recall that one so well but then I remember the other hand you say about there. Big old dude with glasses had the KJ aye? So aye that was the Museman :ok Im not working on Tuesdays as much anymore I think im switching more to Thursdays instead but GL when you go. You should go down Gazza, post up when youre thinking of going and I can tell you what days are good etc and what not.

  8. Re: Does luck or skill make poker ace? Theres not even a debate, if anyone is actually disputing whether skill plays a part in poker. If skill wasnt a large element of the game then professional players who make money month on month wouldnt exist. Many do, so there it is. It really depends on the timescale, whether luck is deemed a factor or not. If you play 1 heads up game, luck plays a huge part. If you could play an infinite amount of Heads up games, luck plays no part whatsoever.

  9. Re: facing a surprise This is why pocket pairs are the dogs cahoonas Aimar, very disguised. Just use that to your advantage like Gaf posted, we all get busted thats the way it is.

  10. Re: Stoke Circus

I was looking at Las Vegas tournies and was shocked to see they charge up to a 40% fee!!!! I believe if you get in the money that they still expect a tip for the dealers too :loon :loon
    Always tip the dealer :ok
  11. Re: Big Slick Tuesday 23rd Jan It depends if you know the player really well you can call him a muppet I guess :lol Plus also Slapdash if I were to do that everytime I saw muppet play id never have my mouth shut. I joke of course!

  12. Re: Big Slick Tuesday 23rd Jan The rebuy (if indeed you do use it instead of the add on, shit happens!) is also 3000 chips. Usually get about 50 runners and a £2500 prizepool for it although its getting busier all the time so it could be more. Id suggest phoning up and booking your spot :ok Im dealing that night actually, im the one with the blue Everton wristband things and a skinhead, maybe youll be on my table. Remember bribes are against house policy at all times.

  13. Re: Couple of hands to review Actually youd have position on him on the second one there looking at it again there as its 3 handed. Hmm still dont think theres anything wrong with the play though but you could also just call and put it all in on a non A or K flop when he bets into you on the flop (which he would regardless of holding most of the time), either way is fine. If you were OOP then youre way is defo best though.

  14. Re: Couple of hands to review Both look fine to me mate. Hand 1 Preflop is spot on. When he reraises all in its VERY ominous, cos I put him on a PP most likely preflop and I would say hes probably flopped a set. But for 4/1 odds you have to call, its possible he could have JJ, QQ, KK, top pair or QJ, lots of things you beat. And you had to bet out on the flop for sure so meh, just one of those things. If the flop comes 9 high or lower you probably get all his money playing it exactly the same way so there you go. Hand 2 3 handed QQ is a fcuking monster hand. His raise is VERY large over yours id actually probably put him on a medium pair as his most likely holding, or just 2 high cards or could just be fooling about etc. As you are OOP against him I think its fine to put it all in there and neutralise your positional disadvantage that you would incur by calling. Id say a lot of the time hed fold to you and youd pick up his 23bb (good result) and hed call with a worse hand most of the rest of the time so no worries.

  15. Re: would you call QQ all in vs 2 re-raises Id call this with the QQ, Id figure it was the best hand personally. I wouldnt love calling it or anything but the shortstack I wouldnt be worried about what he had so much (could have so any things tbh). Then your reraise is EXACTLY the sort of move id associate as someone with AK doing, its a classic AK move so yeah id call. The other likely hand I could put you on would be JJ. I would expect personally for AA or KK just to flatcall the shortstacks all in so i wouldnt put you on those therefore QQ is a call. As for your play mate, I think it was fine too, hed fold a lot of hands there and youd be left HU with what can be expected to be the best hand a lot of the time. I think it was just played fine all round really.
