Grand National trends

Recommended Posts

I've tried to go back as far as i can and only made it to 1991. I will start by doing the last 10 year trends and then adding the other 8 later. Age;- 8-12 10/10 8yo=1 9yo=4 10yo=3 11yo=1 12yo=1 Weight:-10-04 - 11-1 10/10 Rating 136-148 10/10 Won a 3m+ chase 10/10 Won a class/grade 1(A) or 2(B) chase 10/10 Won a chase worth £17,000 or more 10/10 Had 10 or more chase races prior 10/10 Had 4-6 runs since August 10/10 Had 1-4 runs since 1st January 10/10 Days since last run no more than 48 (20-48 days) 10/10 No more than 2 chase falls prior 10/10 Had not finished worse than 3rd in at least 1 of last 3 starts that season10/10. Other notes:- Regardless of finishing positions last 10 winners had gained experience running in the Irish,Welsh,Scottish or English Nationals or experienced Aintree fences sometime prior to winning this. Although 1 won last year French-breds still have a poor record in this race. Right lets start adding the other 8 winners to the trends researched. Age:- 8-12 18/18. 8yo=2 9yo= 6 10yo=5 11yo=3 12yo=2 Weight:-10-00-11-1. 2 wins at 10-00 1 winner was 14lb out of handicap (Bobbyjo 1999). Rating:-136-155 18/18 Won a 3m+ chase 18/18 No more than 2 chase falls prior 16/18 ( 2 had fallen 3 times) Had not finished worse than 3rd in 1 of last 3 starts that season 18/18 1-4 runs since January 1st 18/18 Days since last run 35 18/18 (15-35) Runs since August 4-6 16/18 ( 2 runners had ran 7 times 1991 & 1995) Other notes:- As again regardless of finishing postion all bar 1 winner had experience in 1 of the 4 Nationals or runnning over the Aintree fences. The only horse with no experience was Lord Gyllene back in 1997. Saying that he did finish 2nd in that years Midlands National (Uttoxeter) and did win it the previous year. Couldn't find much information regarding Grades of races and haven't added info about prize money as it seemed poor compared to latter years. No novice has won this race Mr What in 1958. In the last 53 years only one horse the great Red Rum has carried more than 11st 5lbs to victory. Hedgehunter is the only horse since Corbiere in 1982 to carry more than 11st to victory. He carried 11st1lb. Horses carrying over 11st 5lbs are 0 – 88 since 1977. The last horse not to have won over three miles or further over fences, was Gay Trip back in 1970. Trends which catch my eye are Age Weight Rating Runs since August and 1st January. Had not finished worse than 3rd in last 3 starts Won a 3m+ chase No worse than 3 chase falls. Graded wins Previous fencing experience. Days since last run no more than 48 Back later with horses which fall in the trends and my choices.
