Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League

Recommended Posts

The inaugural Twenty20 Champions League starts on Thursday. I'm really looking forward to this event. It will be interesting to see how well taken it is with the best 12 club sides in the world fighting it out. That's the best 12 outside of Pakistan because naturally India have thrown their toys out of the pram :loon :lol. All 23 matches are live on Eurosport in the UK and I'm sure there's some of these sides that bookies have no idea about so hopefully we'll get some really good money making opportunities as we go along.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Right I've spent a good while looking into this so hopefully we can produce the goods. A thing I like about this tournament is that the draw is easier to predict than some. Groups A+B form one half all the way through and do C+D. The 1st round sees groups of 3 with the top 2 going through to the 2nd league stage whereby the top 2 there go into a semi final and final knockout format. Taking that into account then here's my thoughts on each half of the draw as I'm going to take a few outrights in this. Groups A/B half. Group A. Deccan Chargers are here by virtue of winning this season's IPL. However that was in South Africa and when the IPL was in India, the Chargers, then captained by VVS Laxman were awful and despite being early favourites never even made the semi finals. That's a worry as is the lack of players like Herschelle Gibbs and Dwayne Smith, so instrumental in winning the IPL earlier this year. Somerset come into the tournament as English twenty20 runners up. Most of the attention surrounding them coming into the tournament is how Marcus Trescothick will fare away from home and that's a big concern for anyone looking to back Somerset. As it has to be said is their weak bowling attack. They lack a proven quality spinner which you'd think would be a minimum requirement in this event and even though they have the determined Justin Langer leading the side for the last time in this event I can't be having Somerset in this. Trinidad & Tobago have made it by winning the 1st Stanford twenty20 and since then they beat Middlesex in the battle of the champions. They've got a solid side with lots of Caribbean flair. Dwayne Bravo will obviously be the key man but they've got big hitters in Kieron Pollard and Lendl Simmons while the bowling could be their downfall but unknowns like Samuel Badree went very well in Caribbean conditions. If he does the same here then T&T may well be competitive. Group B Diamond Eagles I have to say look the weakest side in this event. They come into the event as runners up in South Africa's Standard Bank Pro20 competition and their squad just doesn't look at the races. They'll be heavily reliant on Morne van Wyk and Boeta Dippenaar with the bat and Ryan McLaren with the ball. Leicestershire fans will know about Dillon du Preez who was turned down by Bangalore in this event. I can't see the South African's progressing from this group. New South Wales won the Big Bash in Australia last year to make it into this event and initially I liked their chances but the loss of Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin and Nathan Bracken takes out 3 kingpins in their side. They still have plenty of batting fireworks though with Dave Warner and Phillip Hughes opening the batting and Simon Katich to hold it all together. Brett Lee, Stuart Clark, Doug Bollinger and Nathan Hauritz are all Australian internationals and if NSW cope without Clarke and Haddin they'll have a good chance in this. Sussex are the English champions and make it through to this stage by virtue of that success. I have to say I'm big on Sussex's chances in this event even though they have no Murray Goodwin who isn't allowed to play after his ICL commitments. They have recruited well for the event though and Dwayne Smith can be the key. England haven't allowed Matt Prior to travel but he rarely played in the domestic event anyway. Luke Wright is out there and perhaps Sussex's star will be Piyush Chawla, 5th top bowler in IPL1 last year. They have a plethora of spin options and Yasir Arafat spearing yorkers in so if they can score enough runs I like Sussex's chances. My 4 to go through to the 2nd group stage are: Deccan Chargers Trinidad & Tobago New South Wales Sussex

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Groups C/D half Group C The Royal Challengers of Bangalore were 2nd in IPL2 this year which gets them into this event. However like the Deccan Chargers they never showed up in IPL1 in India which is a bit of a concern. On their side though is a seemingly easy group to begin with. They'll be without Kevin Pietersen and Jesse Ryder in this event, both of whom played roles in their run to the final of the IPL but Anil Kumble captaining the side proved an inspired decision, I just worry a bit about their batting depth. Cape Cobras won South Africa's domestic competition and although they look the stronger of the South African sides in this, that's not saying much. Losing Graeme Smith will be a loss for any side but JP Duminy is a class act. Herschelle Gibbs lines up for the Cobras who boast solid SA one day performers in Vernon Philander, Charl Langeveldt and Claude Henderson in their bowling attack Otago have been written off by the bookies but I'm not sure I see why. They have some excellent twenty20 batsmen in Brendon McCullum, Aaron Redmond and Neil Broom in their side. Ian Butler showed his quality in the world twenty20 and every Englishman knows what Dimi Mascarenhas can do. Nathan McCullum can be clever with his spin. Otago won the New Zealand domestic competition with some really high scores and I think they could go really well as a dark horse in this event. Group D Delhi Daredevils made it into this event by virtue of no Pakistan sides being invited. They won the league stage of IPL2 but any team which has to do without AB de Villiers and Daniel Vettori will be hit hard. Dave Warner has decided to play for NSW in this event so it will be interesting to see if Tillekeratne Dilshan moves up to open the batting. Delhi have a new captain in Gautam Gambhir after Virender Sehwag, just coming back from injury, stepped down. Glenn McGrath is in the bowling attack but that's where Delhi's problem lie for me. Victoria were runners up in the Big Bash in Australia but for me they are the best twenty20 side in Australia having won the event 3 years out of 4. Cameron White leads them well while David Hussey and Brad Hodge are experienced twenty20 players. Rob Quiney is a hard hitting opener for them. Peter Siddle and Andrew McDonald have experience at test level while Shane Harwood is considered a twenty20 specialist. If I was being picky they lack a quality spinner but that's all they lack. Wayamba are the Sri Lankan champions and boast an awful lot of the Sri Lanka side which made the world twenty20 final in their ranks. Surprisingly Jehan Mubarak not Mahela Jayawardene captains the side which boasts the big hitting Farveez Maharoof in this side. Isuru Udana was a star with the ball both domestically and in the world twenty20 and then there's the wily old fox Ajantha Mendis in their ranks. Batting looks to be a concern to me though with Wayamba winning the Sri Lankan competition without scoring many runs. My 4 to progress to group 2 in this half are: Bangalore Otago Delhi Victoria

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Right that's the preview done. Time for bets. Outright tournament ones 1st. 2pts ew Victoria to win Twenty20 Champions League 8/1 Bet365 (1/2 1/2) As mentioned above, they look the better of the Aussie sides to me and although they are in the hardest side of the draw, I think they have the ability to come through. They are used to winning twenty20 matches and have the best domestic record of anyone in this event. When I priced the event up myself I made them favourites so I'll happily take 8/1 on Cameron White's side. 2pts ew Sussex to win Twenty20 Champions League 12/1 Betfred (1/2 1,2) Sussex have a load of spin options at their disposal and some explosive batting too. Ed Joyce can play a key role in conditions which will suit. James Kirtley and Yasir Arafat have plenty of international experience and can spear good yorkers in. The Sharks have a nice initial group and a nice half of the draw and at 12/1 I'm happy to take my chances with the English champions. 1pt ew Otago to win Twenty20 Champions League 25/1 Boylesports (1/3 1,2) Otago were the highest scoring of the qualifiers for this event and that has some substance for me. Brendon McCullum relished conditions in IPL1 and he'll have the same here. Although they don't have the recognised international depth that a few of these have, they have some unknown and very good twenty20 players and at 25/1 I'm happy to take an ew punt on the Kiwi side surprising a lot of people in this event.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League 1pt P.Chawla Top Tournament Bowler 28/1 Paddy Power (1/4 1,2,3,4) As I said earlier, Piyush Chawla was 5th in the wicket taking charts in the 1st version of the IPL in the Kings XI Punjab side. A few of those above him in the list in the likes of Sohail Tanvir and Shane Warne aren't at this event so that bodes well for the young Sussex leggie. Batsmen may well have to take him on a bit given the tightness of Yasir Arafat and James Kirtley and that will play right into the Indian's hands. Chawla took plenty of wickets for Sussex in England in his short stint so Michael Yardy knows how to use him and if Sussex do go well, Piyush Chawla won't be far away from the top of the wicket taking lists at the end of the event. 1pt Trinidad & Tobago to win Group A 10/3 Sportingbet This group looks wide open to me and could come down to run rate when all is said and done. It wouldn't surprise if all 3 teams end this group with 1 win each to their names as unlike the others, there doesn't look a dominant side in this group. It should be competitive but it's important that the Caribbean men aren't written off in this group. They have some class performers in their ranks and at over 3/1 in a 3 horse race I'll side with them to edge this group.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Topping the run charts in the Indian IPL were an awful lot of opening batsmen so here's a few bets on out and out opening batsmen who should have an advantage on the rest in their teams to be top team batsmen. 1pt H.Gibbs Top Cape Cobras Tournament Batsman 11/4 Ladbrokes Herschelle Gibbs is without a doubt the main man in this Cobras batting lineup. He is used to these conditions having played in India with South Africa a fair bit, not to mention being with Deccan when the 1st IPL took place. Looking down the list of playing personnel in the Cobras side, only JP Duminy has a recognised name to the occasional cricket follower. Gibbs will face competition from the likes of Puttick and Ontong but he has a class advantage on most of his team mates so I'll take the 11/4 here. 1pt M.van Wyk Top Eagles Tournament Batsman 7/2 Stan James Morne van Wyk went well for the Kolkata Knight Riders in this years IPL and although he may not have too much experience of Indian conditions, his teammates won't have much more. He's a hard hitting, shot playing batsman as you would expect from a wicket keeper in this day and age. Having shown his ability against the best bowlers in the world in the IPL earlier this year then I fancy him to outscore his weaker team mates. 1pt B.McCullum Top Otago Tourmanent Batsman 5/2 Ladbrokes Brendon McCullum will be back at the scene of his blistering 150 on the opening night of the 1st IPL in this tournament and that bodes well. There's some very aggressive, hard hitting batsmen in this Otago lineup but none of them have the consistency or the experience which McCullum has. I expect Otago to progress in this tournament so McCullum will get a few knocks to enforce that consistency and even though 5/2 is nothing to write home about, with openers going well in this format historically I'll take the Kiwi wicket keeper in this market. 1pt E.Joyce Top Sussex Tournament Batsman 6/1 Bet365 There's no guarantee that Ed Joyce will open for Sussex in this event but they will need a replacement opener with Murray Goodwin not available in this tournament, and Ed Joyce could well be the man. He opens in the other forms of one day cricket for the Sharks and has had an excellent summer doing so. Luke Wright, Dwayne Smith and Rory Hamilton-Brown all score quickly but if Joyce opens they'll bat around him so he should pick up a few runs against their cameos. I like Joyce as a player and I'm surprised England haven't called on him for their tour of South Africa. That's their loss and at 6/1 I'll take the Irishman in this. 1pt R.Quiney Top Victoria Tournament Batsman 5/1 Bet365 There's no guarantee Rob Quiney will open for Victoria either but it would harsh for him not to having smashed 91 off just 56 balls in the Big Bash final earlier in the year. Brad Hodge missed that game and he could come back to open but even should that happen, Quiney will bat 3 so it's not all doom and gloom. Obviously there's some really batting talent in this side but Quiney can hit with the best of them and the price of 5/1, should he open has reeled me in so I'll take the hard hitting left hander to top the Victoria run charts over the tournament.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Ta mate. Just the one for me in the opening match. Won't wade into anyone too short in twenty20 so just a most 6's bet. 3pts Bangalore to hit most 6's 11/10 Coral Bangalore have got some real big hitters in their side. Ross Taylor, Manish Pankey, Roelof van der Werve and Mark Boucher to name but 4 but even the likes of Kallis, Dravid and Uthappa can clear ropes. The South African side have a couple of hitters in Gibbs, Ontong and even Philander but it's the bowling which could decide this market. I don't see anyone planting their front foot down and smacking Dale Steyn for 6 while Anil Kumble can also be hard to deposit over the ropes. The Bangalore batsmen won't be facing bowling in that class. Only Charl Langeveldt is anywhere near that level but after that I expect the Royal Challenger batsmen to get stuck in and beat the Cobras in 6 hitting.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League JP Duminy made that a lot closer than I wanted it to be. Fantastic innings from him. Great start to the tournament from both a betting point of view and a playing one. The 1st match tomorrow is NSW vs Diamond Eagles at Delhi. I'll go with 2 bets. 3pts R.McLaren's Performance Pts 31&Over 5/6 Bet365 Points scored as follows: 1pt per run, 10pts per catch & 20pts per wicket. Ryan McLaren is a big player in this Eagles set up. He'll bowl 4 overs and he'll bat possibly as high up as number 5 in the batting order. Worst case scenario is he'll bat at number 7 so he'll see plenty of action in the match. As Kent fans will testify, he can bowl very mean at the death so he could pick up a cheap wicket or two if NSW bat 1st. He's also a clean hitter at the death as well so runs will come quickly when he comes in. Although it's only 20 overs, it all squashes into a smaller time frame but the potential for points scoring is still the same so I have no problem taking the overs here. 3pts Under 9.5 6's 5/6 Skybet The Feroz Shah Kotla isn't the smallest ground you'll find and apart from the openers for NSW, there isn't a load of big hitters in either side. Generally for a line to be covered on this ground it would take a Sehwag, Yuvraj or someone like that going bonkers and I don't see anyone in either side who will produce a burst of hitting like that. The Eagles only hit 25 6's on smallish grounds in South Africa in their domestic tournament and that was in 10 matches. NSW were more frequent 6 hitters in Australia but looking at it and only Hughes and Warner stand out as rope clearers. NSW's strength is in their bowling attack and I think they'll restrict the Eagles to a low 6 count which should put the target beyond even Dave Warner so it's the unders for me here.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Both the early game bets were winners. Just the one for me in the late game. I was tempted by David Hussey's performance at a very tempting price but have decided to stick to just the match betting. 3pts Victoria to beat Delhi Daredevils 5/4 Boylesports As I said in my outright bet, I think Victoria are the best side in this competition. Here they step into Delhi's back yard but this isn't the Delhi side which did so well in both IPL's. AB de Villiers was a major player in the latest IPL and Daniel Vettori being absent weakens any side. Victoria are used to winning twenty20 matches. They've won the Aussie Big Bash 3 times out of 4 and were runners up the other time. In Cameron White, David Hussey and Brad Hodge they have quality twenty20 players and as long as they can contain Dilshan I fully expect the Australian side to prevail in this battle of the big guns in Group D.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Victoria won with the minimum of fuss so I'm 4 from 4 so far :dude. 3 for me in the two matches today. 3pts Cape Cobras vs Otago Volts - 10 or more 6's 13/8 Sportingbet Cape Cobras hit 6 6's in Bangalore against the Royal Challengers and now they come to Hyderabad which is a higher scoring ground which usually yields plenty of 6's. There's no Charl Langeveldt for the South African's in this game so they don't really have a bowler that can't be hit. The same goes for Otago really. They have a few internationals but nothing with the pace of Brett Lee for example. A quick look at the batting on display sees Gibbs, Duminy, Davids who hit a century in the SA domestic competition for the Cobras and McCullum, Redmond and Mascarenhas for the Volts. Lots of 6 hitting ability on show on a ground where 6's are frequent so it's the overs here for me. 3pts Somerset to beat Deccan Chargers 8/5 Boylesports I'm putting my life in my own hands here by backing the Sabres but I think they are overpriced, especially given the batting power they have. It's well known what I think of their bowling attack so I won't dwell on that but any side containing the likes of Trescothick, who so far hasn't realised he's left his home, Kieswetter, Hildreth and Langer can't be this price. Deccan have some real quality in their side in Gilchrist, Sharma, Styris and Andrew Symonds but like Somerset, they don't have the greatest bowling attack going around. Deccan flattered to deceive bigtime in the IPL on these shores and with the 2 Indian sides looking flat so far Somerset can take advantage and make it 3 defeats from 3 for the Indians with a win here at a very attractive price. 3pts Somerset vs Deccan Chargers - 10 or more 6's 13/8 Sportingbet As I said above, this is a ground where 6's are frequent and in this match we've lots of batting power and no real bowling attacks. Trescothick, Langer, Kieswetter and Trego along with Gilchrist, Sharma, Styris and Symonds all have huge 6 hitting potential. There is the concern that this will be the 2nd game on this strip but only Ojha is a quality spinner so I expect the batsmen to dominate this 2nd match and stick at least 10 over the ropes during the course of the 40 overs.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League 2 from 3 yesterday. All nice prices though so a very solid profit. One for the 1st game today. Not betting on the match itself although I think Sussex are a big price if this pitch turns like it did on Friday. I'm on them outright though so will be happy enough if they win. 4pts New South Wales Highest 1st 6 Overs 8/11 Skybet New South Wales and Sussex go about their respective innings in different ways. Similar to England and Australia in the 50 over version of the game, New South Wales have 2 big hitters and quick scorers at the top of the line up while Sussex have a more circumspect batsman to try and bat the innings through alongside a quicker scorer. However, as always when I take a 1st so many overs bet it's the bowling attacks I look at more. Sussex are going to have a tough time scoring quickly off Brett Lee and Stuart Clark at the minute. Yasir Arafat can be tight too for the Sharks as can James Kirtley but they also have their expensive days. It's sort of chalk and cheese in terms of approaches for these two sides so I'll take the NSW Blues to be leading through 6 overs.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League

Just how bad is this pitch ? NSW 1.5 when 109 off 17' date=' short price ?[/quote'] Looks a very tired wicket. No bounce at all, little pace. Brett Lee and Stuart Clark to face. I think the price is a fair one myself. Agree with Westy. 130 should be enough. Was plenty in both matches here on Friday.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Yeah I wouldn't be in a hurry to take the 6/4 that it gets chased down. It's a slow, low wicket. Nobody in the Sussex lineup is going to take the game away from NSW unless Dwayne Smith goes bonkers but this pitch isn't suited to him. Looks like it'll be a straight knockout between Sussex and the Eagles for the runners up spot in this group.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Ta guys. Having watched all this match so far, I'm going with 2 in the later game. 3pts Wayamba to beat Delhi Daredevils 13/8 Boylesports I must admit I had to do a fair bit of homework on the Sri Lankan side but having done so, I don't think they are without a chance in this match. Sure Delhi are favourites for the personnel they have in their side but they were anything but convincing in their opening match and such a beating that they took means not only do they need to win this but they need to win it well to improve their run rate in case the result in the final match of the group goes against them. This match will be on the same wicket the Sussex/NSW match was on and in the 2nd innings of that game the wicket started turning big. In the Wayamba squad is one Ajentha Mendis who will be licking his lips. They also have a couple of others who can turn the ball. Of course Delhi have a few spinners in their ranks as well but they are used to playing on better wickets than this one with almost all their batsmen being strokemakers rather than dig in grafters. Wayamba will be totally fine with this wicket. They are used to 120 being a winning score in their domestic competition and at 13/8 I'm happy to go with Jehan Mubarak's men to win this one and send the Daredevils out. 5pts Delhi Daredevils vs Wayamba - Under 7.5 6's 5/6 William Hill My biggest bet of the competition so far this. In two matches on the wicket next door on Friday there were only 11 6's, 6 of which came in the 1st innings of the day. An innings and 14 overs into the 1st match today and there's been just 3 6's so we can see that what I said on Friday about this ground not yielding too many 6's holds true. The pitch is tired and isn't coming onto the bat at all and that's only going to get worse to bat on not easier. Delhi didn't hit a single 6 against Victoria on Friday and unless Virender Sehwag goes mental I don't see this total being threatened. The pitch isn't one for the big hitters so this line looks 1 if not 2 too high so I'm firmly on the unders here.

Oh so close but it came through in the end' date=' another great call Kev.[/quote'] Ta mate. Delhi got Mahela out at just the right time to preserve the run of profit from every match so far in this tournament. I'm surprising myself with how well it's going so far. :hope it continues :lol.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League Just the one for me in the opening match tomorrow. Obviously I'm already on T&T in the group bet which they can't win unless they win this game. I don't think they are without a chance either. 3pts K.Pollard's Performance Pts 30&Over 5/6 Bet365 Points are scored as follows: 1pt per run, 10pts per catch & 20pts per wicket. Kieron Pollard is a big player for this Trinidad side. Not only is he a very big hitting batsman but he's a terrific fielder and a very handy bowler at this level. He'll bat fairly high up in the order, maybe 4 or 5 and I would imagine seeing the wickets there have been so far, that he'll bowl 4 overs. He usually fields in the key areas so a catch or two isn't out of the question. However with bat and ball this is an easily achievable target so it's the overs for me here. Will come back tomorrow with the later game bets. Want to see how the wicket plays 1st but obviously I'm effectively already on Otago to win that match so it's unlikely I'll bet in the match betting itself.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Champions League I think Bangalore to hit the most sixes in the later game at EVENS maybe a worthwhile bet. With the likes of Taylor, Uthappa and Kohli in their line up you would think there would be a fair few big hits in them.

Congrats Kev on a very good run thus far! You must be owed a couple of pints!! Very impressed with your excellent cricket knowledge! Long may this run continue!
:welcome to PL Perry :ok. Thanks for the big up. Hope you've made a few quid from them and hopefully we'll continue to profit for the rest of the tournament. Westy, good luck with that. Hopefully Bangalore batting 1st is half the job done. I'm always wary of taking on McCullum in 6 hitting though from past experience, especially here where he smashed 150 odd in the IPL against Bangalore. Hope it comes in for you though. Couldn't find anything I liked in this later game so left it although obviously I'm hoping Otago win (with fewer 6's ;)).
