The Format The 18 counties are split into 3 groups of 6 which are regionalised - North, South and Mid/Wales/West groups. The groups consist of: South Essex Surrey Sussex Middlesex Hampshire Kent Mid/Wales/West Glamorgan Gloucestershire Warwickshire Worcestershire Northamptonshire Somerset North Lancashire Nottinghamshire Leicestershire Derbyshire Durham Yorkshire Each team plays 8 matches, 4 at home and 4 away. At the end of the group stage the top 2 in each group goes through to the quarter finals and are joined by the 2 best runners up. The quarter finals are played and then we have finals day where the semi finals and final are played on the same day which this year is at Edgbaston.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 3 outrights for me to begin with and the same 3 to win their groups. 3pts ew Nottinghamshire to win Twenty20 12/1 Totesport (1/2 1,2) 2pts Nottinghamshire to win North Group 7/2 Bet365 Nottinghamshire have everything you could possibly want for this competition. Runners up last year and that hurt the Outlaws especially as they lost to local rivals Leicestershire in the final on home territory. They've strengthened their squad nicely with the additions of the powerful Will Jefferson and the classy Mark Wagh not to mention Bilal Shafayat. David Hussey is in excellent nick and should score a lot of runs in this competition. Stephen Fleming knows how to lead a team to victory in this competition and in Charlie Shreck they have a guy taking wickets by the barrel load. Mark Ealham's a canny cricketer and with a couple of useful spinners too, Notts tick every box. Ryan Sidebottom could be a big miss but I feel there's adequate cover for him. If Hussey gets going this lot will be away and gone. They have a fairly weak group with Derbyshire unlikely to pose a threat and Leicester having doubts over the loss of Darren Maddy. I think they'll win their group, get the home quarter final and go to Edgbaston and claim the title. 2pts ew Worcestershire to win Twenty20 25/1 Skybet (1/4 1,2,3,4) 1pt Worcestershire to win Mid/Wales/West Group 6/1 Skybet Worcestershire went quietly along in the Friends Provident trophy where they eventually finished 4th in the Northern group after a bad start to the campaign. In recent times they've suddenly come into a lot of runs with solid contributions coming from Phil Jaques, a player who may well be one of the players of the tournament, Vikram Solanki and Graeme Hick. With the ball they have the useful Kabir Ali and Doug Bollinger and they have the spin twins Batty and Price. I fancied Worcester last season in this but Lou Vincent never really got going for them. Jaques is fearless at the top of the innings and if he bats anytime then the Royals will put scores up. With their efficient bowling attack I think they'll qualify from a wide open group and have every chance of going all the way. They're overpriced at 25s and thus we're on accordingly. 2pts ew Kent to win Twenty20 20/1 Skybet (1/4 1,2,3,4) 1pt Kent to win South Group 6/1 Blue Square Kent have a decent side and I think they have the makings of a team capable of going all the way. Much will depend on Andrew Hall but if he has a god tournament then Kent are sure too. Last summer he was as effective as they came with the ball and this year Ryan McLaren and Yasir Arafat are around to back him up. Their batting lineup which includes more strokemakers than power is capable of scoring runs but they shipped them easily last year too. With Arafat and McLaren in though that's les likely to happen. Everyone at the St Lawrence Ground have had an extra year to formulate plans for this competition and having had a decent Friends Provident campaign I think the Spitfires could well take the South Group and be at Edgbaston on August 4.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 If Somerset were a small price then i'd be tempted to back them. In decent form of late and have experience in this competition. Langer did ok last time out from what I recall! Quite shocked how well he took to this form of the game. Blackwell and White are as destructive as you'll find in 20/20 for me. Hopefully Tres will get to play the full competition as he's not bad in the One Day stuff too. Caddy's bowling as good as he has for a while by the looks of things (his figures don't lie). Still on its day it can be a lottery and as Kev says its the highlight of the summer and i'm gutted i can't watch any of it! Still i'll be checking in and cheering on the Sabres when I can.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Caddick hasn't played 1 day cricket recently and I can't see him playing Twenty20 especially with the piece on the Sabres website from Langer saying about using youngsters in this form of the game. Somerset have every chance of promotion in the Championship and the Pro40 and Caddick could well be saved for those missions rather than this. On paper, with Langer, White, Blackwell and Trescothick around Somerset look awesome but there's just something about them that I'm not sure about. Certainly something stopping me backing them at 10/1 especially if an inexperienced bowling attack takes the field.

Solid reasoning but I think Andy Hall will be unavailable for some - if not all - of our Twenty20 games as he's in the SA team that will play a series in Ireland. From rediff.com:
South Africa will play Ireland on June 24 before playing India on June 26, 29 and July 1.
From kent's website:
Kent County Cricket Club today announced that Morne Morkel will be replacing Andrew Hall for their forthcoming Twenty20 Cup campaign.
Hall, who has been recalled for International duty, will be part of the South African One Day squad to play a series against India, in Ireland, starting on 21 June. Morkel, 22, a right arm fast bowler and left hand bat will be based in Kent for the next three weeks. He has played in one Test Match and three One Day Internationals for South Africa.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Essex have just announced the signing of Adam Hollioake. He is coming out of retirement just to play 20:20 cricket for them. This could turn out to be an inspired move with his great wicket taking record and ability to get quick runs. They have been a very good one day side over the past couple of years and have plenty of decent hitters. The South group is fairly tough though and they may lose players to the England ODI squad which is announced on Friday. Worth a go anyone?

Worth a few point's on Essex, decent all-rounder's and good spinners is the key to this game though Bopara being injured doesn't help and also when does Gough come back from his hand injury.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 there seem to be fitness concerns over Irani, Bopara and Gough - three of their key players. Jefferson, Cook and Pettini have been touted by David Lloyd as possible England ODI players aswell so they may end up with a weakened squad...

If Bichel stays for the 20/20 then they've got a half decent squad,as most of the Aussie's are going back for a mid-season break and the Sri-Lankan's have a series against Bangladesh. Lancs with Jayasuria and Keedy, who will be there 2 main men, have a damn strong squad. There again it's really a slog fest and then containment so any one could really win it. Still it's fantastic stuff to watch:nana :nana

Bopara was always going to be in the England squad so they've lost nothing there. I'm sure Irani will play this tournament. Even he can't find 20 overs too difficult. That said they've too many jack of all trades, master of none's for my liking and although Hollioake is great for publicity he hasn't played a professional game of cricket for 3 years and the game has changed markedly since then. He'll show flashes of quality but for the most part it won't happen. Essex's odds reflect on their Pro40 success. They're in the easiest group but I still can't see them making finals day.

:$ :rollin What's key for Essex is that they have Middlebrook, Kaneria and Flower who are all good spinners. Spin bowling has been successful in this format. Don't agree South is easiest group. Surrey are the most successful T20 side, Hampshire are strong in one days and Sussex won the 50over tourney last year. Then there's Kent who you've flagged up. Looks tough.

Surrey aren't the most successful Twenty20 side, that's Leicestershire. They've got a solid batting lineup but as a bowling attack they're next to non existant. No need to even mention Hampshire as they don't take it at all seriously. Sussex might have won the 50 over competition last year but they've done absolutely nothing in this ever. This group as ever will be a 3 horse race, Surrey, Kent and Essex. Given the ease of this group I daresay they'll all qualify but when up against Northern opposition are likely to be found wanting although of the 3 I'd take Kent to make finals day over the other 2.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 It's been the same all 4 years mate. Warne's never played for us in Twenty20. I'd be surprised if Crawley does too. As I said earlier due to the nature of the group Surrey, Essex and Kent are likely to qualify but of the 3 I rate Essex's chances overall the least. Only my opinion but without Bopara and Andy Flower - 2 successful cogs for them in this last year I can't see them even making finals day.

Surrey are the most successful T20 side
Common misconception that :eek Leicestershire are the most successful 20/20 in the world:ok Leicestershire to win the tournament at 20/1 Anyway I'm still going to back us again this year, 20/1 is (yet again) crazy, we make finals day every single year and they still price us up at these obscene prices because we are not one of the fashionable counties. We still have the best 20/20 bowling attack in the country imo, Broad went through the whole of last year tourny with a sub 4 economy rate :eek and him and Masters are running into form at a good time. Throw in Snapes moonballs and its 12 overs of top notch bowling :nana Yeah we have lost Maddy but one player didnt make a team and the batting contribution of Ackerman, Allenby, Nixon and Robinson has been the main reason we have made finals day every single year, no team likes coming to Grace Road either as we sell out for every single home game we play in the tournament and its a hostile atmosphere for visiting teams in cricket terms. 20's will look very big at some point, I'm sure of that.

Got a proper chance mate and at a huge price. For me easily the best Twenty20 side in the country but I just can't see past Notts in that North group and once you're travelling away in the quarters it gets messy. I'll just hoover up on Leicestershire in the group matches :dude :ok

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 Expekt have been on the sauce. This ones getting hit before it's chopped :lol . 5pts A.Gidman Top Gloucestershire Twenty20 Batsman 4/1 Expekt Putting this simply, with Spearman out and Harvey gone, Gidman is Gloucester's best batsman by a country mile. He'll need to bat up the order so that his side can score runs and he's been in terrific form recently. Scoring hundreds for fun in the Championship and a solid hitter of a cricket ball who'll clear the ropes at will when he gets going and he's the one to beat in terms of Gloucester's top run scorer.

Forgive my ignorance but is Marshall playing for them in the Twenty20? He and Gidman gave Kent a going over in the FPT a week or so ago.

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007

I noticed Totesport are doing an offer on their website
Place an Outright bet on the Twenty20 Cup (prior to the start of the competition) and if your team is knocked out in the Semi-Finals we'll refund your original stake!
As they've made every finals day, it might be worth backing it with them? Hope this helps someone...

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 With regards to the top Kent bat - I think Stevens (11/4) or Walker (4/1) could be good bets. I think Van Jaarsveld's only the favourite because he was our top scorer last year - and that was mainly because of his 75 in the QF. To be honest I think we're weaker (no Andy Hall - who you can back at 4/1 with expekt.com!, no Tyron Henderson who's just signed for Middx - both were our sloggers) than we were last year so will struggle to get out of the group. We relied on Min Patel's spin a lot last year and I don't think he's featured much this term (not sure why).

Re: Cricket: Twenty20 Cup 2007 2 more outrights before the off. 2pts G.Hick Top Worcestershire Twenty20 Batsman 5/1 Expekt Graeme Hick is as experienced as they come and he's just come into a bit of form at the right time. He's recently surpassed 40,000 first class runs and hit a century in the FP Trophy match at Northampton too. Phil Jaques has had to go back to Australia for family reasons so there is a spot available as opener which I'm pretty sure Hick will take up. By opening he'll get to take advantage of the 6 over fielding restrictions and if he bats well in the 4 games Jaques misses he should make this into a 2 horse race between himself and Vikram Solanki. Solanki could well be in the England squad though which makes the 5/1 we get on Hick too good to turn down. 4pts M.Ramprakash Top Surrey Twenty20 Batsman 5/2 Expekt Mark Ramprakash is a real class batsman now and even though Surrey have the hard hitting power of James Benning and Ali Brown I still think Ramps is value at 5/2. I mention Benning but he might not play much part if he called into the England squad. Ali Brown's in no form at all with the bat which brings us onto Ramprakash. He's not known as a big hitter but he can clear the ropes with ease when he needs to. He's a clever batsman and I think he'll score the most Surrey runs in this tournament.
