Re: Newbury 29/12/06 Seeing as I said I preferred Grade 1 races i'm going to have a bash at a pre race analysis of the 2.40 Newbury.

It's hard to split Kanpai and Sir Jimmy Shand in what looks an interesting race with many horses re opposing each other. Kanpai's form of 6 wins stands out a mile and this includes a Grade 2 win when beating Massinis Maguire by 12 lengths. It's character was tested last time out when making mistakes, being hard ridden and asked a real question, it responded well and ran on gamely to get up and win. Massinis Maguire beat Wichita Lineman at Cheltenham over this distance and for that reason the latter is not fancied today although McCoy in the saddle is a big plus but needs improvement. Battle Cry, Rothbury and Mossville might do well in lesser company but all look out of their depth. Roll Along has had some good results but did not look like a 1-4 horse when struggling, under pressure but may benefit in the step up in trip. Sir Jimmy Shand has a nice profile, looking like a young improving horse with lots of potential. Won it's last 2 races, last time out at this course and looked comfortable but they were both in Class 4 races and it's a big step up in class. I'll go for Kanpai with the Grade 2 form in the bag and the good attitude shown last time out when asked a real question, also because it gave Massinis Maguire a 12 length beating and that form doesn't look like being overturned. Sir Jimmy Shand should go close and I'd be inclined to have a small reverse forecast on Kanpai and Sir Jimmy Shand too. Suggested bets: 5 pts win Kanpai 1pt rev f/c Kanpai and Sir Jimmy Shand
