evilchris
Hi, im new to poker and only know the basics, but would like to learn more. Could someone tell me what they think the best site to start playing on for fun would be.:ok
philossify
Re: Best Place To Start I would advise skipping the "Play for fun" games as they are so unlike anything real that they don't teach you much. Much easier to sign up (no money required) onto a site with some multi table freeroll tournements and try some of those. Say for example Sporting Odds (though other people might reccomend others) and then (when you win a little money off a freeroll - might take you say 10 games over a week) move up to something like the dollar up value tourney that all the regulars on here play or try a few $1 Single table tounements. When (and if) you get hooked then you can possibly put up a bankroll (if you want to make the process of moving up faster) or build a bankroll from freerolls. If and when you get sufficiently skilled/confident then I'd suggest some fixed limit raked hand games after depositing some money and getting one of the bonuses (have to normally play certain number of raked hands to make the bonus into real extractable money). After that its a matter of finding out where you fit in the food chain :beer
Pokerose
Re: Best Place To Start Read lots of books. Lots. I would suggest trying a few sites to see which you feel more comfortable with,(since its for free, right) and there are sites, that offer small sign up bonus (don't know off the top off my head which, tbh), without you having to put in your own money when you are finally ready. I'm sure you'll work the rest out.:D
PeeGee
Re: Best Place To Start I THINK the cheapest way to learn poker is to play it with friends in the same situation as you. I sure wouldnt deposit money to a pokersite and sit down at a table without knowing what Im doing. Even tho you hear people in big, televised tournaments say they learned to play on the internet, I'd actually advice you to go the other way around! Gather some friends together, have some beer, play for small money and have fun!
PAULM03
Re: Best Place To Start The only way to learn is by playing. Theres plenty of freerolls and cheap SNG tournaments. I started on the $2 tables on Betfred with a crib sheet of starting hands to give me a basic idea of strategy. I'm the first to admit I haven't come a long way since then but I've had a few nice payouts in the SO dollar-up and have won way more than I've spent despite never reading a book on the subject. Common sense can get you a long way at the lower stakes, you just have to take that leap.
Penelopeys
Re: Best Place To Start I recommend Sporting Odds :clap I made 17 dollars in a freerole in june last year, and those 17 bucks have now grown to 10.000 dollars... a great site with many possibilities for good games... Start out with sit and go, 1 dollar or 3 dollar, 10 players and 3 prizes. Be patient, a lot of cowboys in the beginning of the game, and then make a move when you get a good hand. Playing tight will be rewarded later on, because the players then will respect your move more... Then you should practise in the freeroll at 19.00 every night... good practise! Last but not least: Play the dollar up every monday and wednesday at 21.00... we all play that... good value and heaps of fun :ok :welcome to the lounge :cheers PS. Stay away from Playmoney-games... not real poker
Masterplan
Re: Best Place To Start play money games are a good example of first level rebuys ... but who wants to play like that :p i woulda reccomend the vc/bluesquare/paddypower networks micro-limit cash games, $0.02/$0.04 blinds, cant get much smaller than that, and they still play like standard cash games, great way to learn with little loss possible
Valiant23
Re: Best Place To Start Hiya Evilchris. Clotty has just started out and asked a similar question in The Poker Novice Thread. Hiya Clotty. First thing I'd say is, don't use the play money tables. These are (imo) only good to help you learn the rules of the game you're playing and to get used to the layout of the site that you are using. If you want to learn then freerolls are your next step. This post by Gotafancy? covers 'stages of development'. You seem to be at stage 2. This thread here explains my journey from novice, and how I managed to accrue the start of a bankroll as well as the start of my poker education. Now I have to stress that I really wouldn't recommend ring games to any novice poker player. I don't/can't play those yet, but that isn't my reason. I'll leave a ring game player to answer if you are definite that you want to play cash games. :ok Try following this advice mate. Kevsul did and last night finished 3rd in a large MTT freeroll winning $100. ;)
ThePro19
Re: Best Place To Start My two pence worth... I never knew what poker was until I 'accidentally' came across Late Night Poker on tv. I was hooked. Not only that, I learned everything I need to from it about playing real poker. I haven't read any book on poker either, despite being sent one a year last Christmas from Betfair... it was about playing internet poker, but the clown that wrote it has obviously never played with some of the morons you get on the internet. I would strongly recommend watching Late Night Poker... as opposed to any of the other poker programmes there are, and there a millions every night now. LNP can be found each night (I think) on Discovery Home and Leisure. The games are effectively STT's and the starting chips and blind structure are very similar to the STT's you would find on the internet. I think the players on LNP are probably some of the best players in the world without being obnoxious... Phil Hellmuth excluded, although he wasn't as obnoxious when he played on LNP. I would agree with PeeGee that it is better to play some 'live' games first rather than internet to learn how to play a good game. Oh, and finally, just by watching LNP I was able to get my standard of play to the level where I was able to win 2 of my first 4 live tournaments (at a casino) for a very nice profit of £2000 Hope this helps, and good luck. Martyn@BF
Re: Best Place To Start I strongly reccommend starting out at Betfred :clap , not only is it user friendly but we hold daily $100 freerolls (means free to enter, for free no money, but you can win real money) for new users to our site. This will allow you to pick up the basics before you hit the big time. There is a section on our site betfred poker.com that explains all the hands in order and terminology etc. People here should be able to give you a few tips to, they seem to think they know what they are talking about! :lol Hope it helps and good luck. I started out using Betfred to learn how to play poker using the freerolls -after 2 days I had qualified for a place in the final of the $50,000 Manchester Tournament :loon and within two weeks had qualified for the Daily Telegraph FF Betfred $50,000 Final. I would highly recommend Betfred to anyone starting out in poker - :ok

I started out at Betfred too. Unfortunately I don't use it much these days because I find the blind structure and starting stacks are too fast/low. It's a shame because the software and interface is just about the best there is, I don't even mind the carpet.

cemaescutie
Re: Best Place To Start Does anyone know any links that will provide the basic rules for poker texas hold'em without having to go to the trillions of 'poker games sites'. All I want are the basic rules to settle an argument. Unless anyone here can settle it for me..... the dispute is how to play the five community cards and the 2 pocket cards. ie - If there is a straight on the table say (34567) and 2 players are still in the pot one with an Ace high - the other with nothing - am I right in saying it is a split pot? Some one in our poker league argues that the player with the ace high, should win? Can any one help? Thanks
Valiant23
Re: Best Place To Start In a straight like that the Ace is dead. If the flop came 2 -- 3 -- 4 -- 5 -- 6 with various suits (no flush!!) Then the Ace is dead. The best hole cards to have would be 7 -- 8. Masterplan
Re: Best Place To Start following the number 1 basic rule of holdem, the ebst 5 cards out of the 7 win if the ebst 5 cards is the 2 3 4 5 6 straight for both players, whatever else the other cards have, even if they are their own cards, or make a 6 cards straight with the ace, do not count!
