2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot)

As many of you may or may not have witnessed I have slowly begun a transformation in my approach to poker , I've always been intrigued my the game and wanting to learn more and thats something I hope to continue moving forward. But TILT has got the better of me many a time and even when not on full blown tilt I can feel a bit frustrated especially when go on a losing run in games was comfortably beating but that is variance and as keep telling myself as long as keep getting in the right situations the results will flow back in the right direction. I do miss playing Live as no longer within walking distance of a card room and not aware of any pub's running any games in the area. Currently I don't have much time to play as would like for stuff like getting in any value leagues/promotions so I'm grinding away with the 6 Max SnGs on Stars these are backed but all other action is on my own dime but I only really join in Micro MTTs & Freerolls but would like to challenge myself in a few more larger prizepools with bigger potential to make some solid profit (I may advertise some action on here to reduce variance). My 1st Primary Objective : Is to move back into profit with my backer currently down $170ish and hopefully before year is over grind $7 SnG currently solely on $3.50s. Other Goals - * To Make A Profit (No Idea of previous yearly best but reckon 2014 had atleast £400 minimum) * Play a Live Tourney worth £220+ (Highest Perviously played in £60+5 though had a £90 night in a £10 rebuy once) * Ability to play stress free (Most difficult of the lot would say so) * And Last for now to encourage Punters Lounge to thrieve again :beer

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) So my primary objective is no longer applicable the site I was backed on is shortly closing down and my backer has decided to end the deal as my volume is a little low for what they are looking for in those they wiil continue to keep on. But let's take this as a positive , I'm no longer chasing make-up so I can relax on that score makes the goal of multi-tabling $7 bit more distant especially as won't be grinding as hard but instead come up with some fun little challenges that should hopefully benefit my overall game including playing variants other than just holdem.

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) So I kicked off my independent journey on Full Tilt yesterday playing a $3.30 10-Game MTT & $5.50 added value MTT , unfortunately didn't really pick up much momentum in the latter and busted AJ > 55 Pre to finish 19th/26 after which that left me in the 10-Game and going pretty well , at one of the breaks decided to play a $2.25 HU game which won getting it in AJ to A8s. Bck to the 10-Game get down to last 8 pretty comfortable and get to FT of 6 with the chip lead but the next four stacks closely bunched behind and an ultra short stack who eventually busts after a short lived revival , leaving us on the bubble which lasted a little while until some bizarre Triple Draw play left a couple of shorties who appear have no clue on ICM or just not care. I did lose my chip lead just after the bubble bust but by time 3 handed had a commanding chip lead 50K playing 21k & 10K (roughfully) I bust the short stack in PLO was a flopped set holding against the aces & flush draw. So now Heads Up with 75% of the chips , what I tend to view as a free shot to take them out and still leave even stacks trouble is that doesn't work the same way in limit rounds I was reading his cards well but after he called light once he kept on calling me down which unfortunately lead to him getting back to even stacks after calling down to big bluffs in the no-limit holdem rounds. Luckily for me the momentum swung back my way in Stud Hi , NL 2-7 and lastly finished off with Badugi for my 1st MTT win of the year infact my 1st MTT cash of year :nana

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) So January is in the books and it was a very quiet one for me , didn't have the motivation to grind to much especially as I like to play without distraction and time contraints. Only played on 3 days in 2nd half the month just in hyper sng's mainly from them sessions pretty much break even nevertheless won $36.60 in total in January every little helps :D Highlight for the month: 1st MTT win of the year : $3.30 10-Game (1 of 28 Runners) Moving forward into February not expecting to play massive volume might get a few session in during my time off in the middle that all depends on if manage to book a little break away somewhere. Going to look at playing a few MTTs today though hopefully finding a FT or two :)

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) Well my plan of playing MTTs yesterday saw me play zero MTTs and get very tilted at the hyper heads up tables wouldn't have looked quite as bad if I stuck to a set limit and a designated bankroll but this is where playing without a backer because I don't have set buy in levels and games to play leaving me free to chase losses a tactic that I don't want to be adopting. I was also playing hypers so the variance in these can be that much larger as nearly always getting in on a flip and you can't play tight in these games on you get eaten up , I went through both my Stars & Full Tilt balances which totaled about $65 before I deposited an extra $15 when all that was gone through , luckily I clawed back up to $50 to leave me only $30 in the red zone to start off Feb and a stark reminder that I have a long way to go to be the player that I want to be and feel capable to be. The mental side of the game is my real issue , I expect way too much of myself and think like everyone overestimate my capabilities a bit but that said do think I put in enough work to continue to make a small profit regularly.

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) So now in just 2 days I have lost $80 ($50 2nd $30 3rd) and not even managed to have much fun playing I seem to have lost some of my motivation ,T I have withdrew most withdrawable money from sites I play on and stored it on Skrill for foreseeable. I now plan to try and play just freeroll's and what odd's & sod's I can was the remaining balances that I'm unable to withdraw yet , here is the list currently : Stars - $2.97 Paddy - $1.10 Everest - £5.01 (unsure think need play through) Betfred - £10.37 PKR - $17.50 (think need $25 minimum) Bet365 - £2.11 (solely for my glory hunt thread) DTD - £0.61 So there should still be tourney's to keep me playing if choose to but no funds to have any kind of blow out playing hyper SnGs or jump buy in's. Hope to report back with some positive news soon :hope

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) Right well just come back to this thread and realised how quickly my initial goals have faded and look highly improbable given I'm no longer with my backer (due to site closing down we decided to part ways as volume wasn't big enough). Which means the primary objective to move u to $7 SnGs is indeed off and I forgot I had played the Goliath so my highest previous tourney played in is £120 , the playing stress free is also a write off and right now don't know when that will change. I have not stopped playing completely but for now like stated in post above it will be very minimal. I have 10 days this month so will try and come up with some goals to acheive in that time but for now ........ it's freeroll city for me basically.

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) It seems like you're often in limbo with what you want from poker, would this be right? I mean your goals often change, your games often change and your motivation is up and down so it does come across like you feel you should be playing more than you actually want to be playing. I say you could find a more content path with poker if you really know what you want from it. If it's just fun then you don't really need to set any challenges but try to maximise your potential when you do play by playing tournaments. Or if you want a steady income then you really have to fully commit on a game that suits your skill set and one that you will enjoy to play even 6months down the line. If you don't really enjoy playing or don't have any ambitions in the game then it would be time to quit, otherwise you're just lighting money on fire.

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) You have hit the nail on the head , which is exactly why I have stepped away from playing much poker because is no point me playing without any aim and just chasing losses when not having a good night which can undone a month for hard work in one go therefore just throwing away money. The one thing I wrestle with is that I feel I have some potential in my understanding and gameplay to be able to compete at a higher level and sometimes this leads to not taking micro games as seriously as I should , but then I don't have the bankroll to support playing more meaningful stakes , whenever I play backed I find it easier to give 110% because I don't want to let people down but in theory surely I should want to play with that same level of intensity for myself even at micro stakes because I get all the returns. My ambitions for the future are more based around playing live games at festivals and just on a more regular basis in daily casino tournments and making profit in them to push on however I don't drive and therefore finishing games at 1-2am is not ideal when that means adding on taxi fares. So yeah I do have ambitions but realising them or even giving them a chance is not in the immediate future by the looks of it , so just trying to get the fun into my game again and start watching more training video's on MTTs for now.

Re: 2015 - Story of a Micro Player (DanShot) So not much to report have not got a routine am working on building a free website via Wordpress , have been playing a little bit here and there but with no structure so it's been a bit sloppy due to my mental game lately a very big obstacle but no real losses so not going to get hung up on that. Elsewhere have been watching the Jason Somerville twitch streams a bit and even though most of what he says is stuff I'm already aware of it just helps sink in exactly how to certain situations when you hear the theory behind it especially when dissecting a given hand like what hands would not bluff on the river and when to preserve chips. With that inspiration will be looking at starting a much smaller Run It Up challenge in the next few days.
