  1. Re: New Year Resolutions

Thanks mate, aye I can't disagree with you there - it's number one priority for me. I feel like I've got the mental strength now to stay away, hopefully it continues. It's been a steep/expensive learning curve tho lol. I feel like keeping myself on here keeps me away from it tho, I've got back involved in the BBOTD comp this month and aim to stick around this time. Looking forward to continuing my learning next year and hopefully ill be able to provide a bit more and better input into the forum at the same time.
Great Stuff, I hope your punting life becomes more drilled and refined, we cant be masters at anything in Gambling, thats the nature of the beast, but we have choices on what we bet on, given our knowledge and our gut feelings, along with the value. I see you are 21...and if old barstewards like myself who have seen almost everything in this game, cant pass down some advice on pitfalls, we are not being fair. Dont let anyone tell you this game is easy or they have it worked out...Every single person gambling has been down in the basement, feeling sorry for themselves, done their "bollocks", but do you carry on and learn, or just carry on? Your points..If i may. 1. Bet to level stakes, well I dont, I bet within my bank to a maximum, but that max is covered by an amount, so 1 max bet wont clean me out. It all depends on your GUT instinct of... 1. The price, and 2.... how sure are you of the call you have made. But even when things are going T!Ts up, I do my best to scramble something back of my stake...eg yesterday i laid chelsea.....it was costing me 38 points. when they went 2-0 up. I got out of the bet with a 35 point loss, I see that as a 3 point victory. tell myself im a [email protected] more careful, next time, kick the cat, and move on...DONT BEAT YOURSELF UP, dont chase losses, its a never ending marathon..not a sprint. So having yourself a bank, even if that bank is £500, IMO your max bet should be £25...and your stake can and should be between £1 - £25 given the conditions. I promise you this if you keep to this type of Formula, you will start to see light...But this is your betting bank, and you may need to top it up(hopefully not) but dont gamble with anything else..NOTHING. 2. Record all Profit n Loss, this is CRUCIAL, look at it every week, and see were your going wrong, try to fix it, if you cant ditch it....From JAN 1st I will be ditching horse racing(34 years betting on them almost every day), apart from, going the races maybe twice a year. and Cheltenham, I cant get a profit on them anymore, Ive changed how i do things etc, but still down on the year...Almost 14k..So its going, I see a profit in Football n Cricket and thats were im staying. P & L is crucial, ask any online bookmaker for your P & L, they will unhappily oblige, ask yourself why? 3. Dont bet blind...Two fly's on a wall...The bookies want you to be this person, dont dont dont be something they want you to be...PSYCOLOGY,,there always talking about the next race in bookies, their not doing it for your sake, they want the people to have a bet BLIND,,"lay the sprat to catch the mackeral"..Put your IPOD on when you need to go in.. In fact dont go in, split your betting bank down with 5 online bookmakers, get the bonus, but stick that casino stuff were the sun dont shine.. BOG x 5 diffrent bookies,,,youll be restricted in 12 months time, if you show your dicipline. 4, AGREE WITH 5, we have talked about, Im going to be crude here....Its like pulling your pants down in a high security prison in Mexico, bending over, and of the first 100 blokes who take the offer only two dont have aids... You have more chance of not developing full blown aids than winning on the machines, and like the above metaphor Your still over a log getting the b'jeseus taking out of you, with little to no chance of coming out the other side. And here is something... EVERY BOOKMAKER who have a FOBT working for them is part of that crowd in the prison waiting their turn, cheering the situation on...DONT BE THAT PERSON..m8 6. Yes with a smile on your face, and treat yourself, or someone close to you. GL m8
  2. Re: Everton v Wigan Athletic > Boxing Day

Oh' date=' and I very much doubt either Cole or Gibson will get their red cards overturned should they appeal. In fact I wouldn't even bother appealing[/quote'] on MOTD, they reckon the panel should be SACKED if it is not overturned, and to be honest they should be, if it comes down to players suffering cos a ref and linesman had a ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE...(osmans goal included), by first sending cole off for nothing..and leveling the playing field by sending gibson off...Were is the game going? He is a young new ref in the prem, Who IMO needs to go back down for a few weeks.....Its the fist time I have ever heard the home support sing "you dont know what your doing", when a away player gets sent off. He was the 4th official at the Chelsea game yesterday, and there was a problem with the ref in the first half, The TV and dare say the managers were fearful of him coming on, given his performance the day before.. For the good of the game they should be resinded, otherwise.."were are we going with contact in this game"?
  3. Re: Everton v Wigan Athletic > Boxing Day

I don't think they will run out of steam, because traditionally they always tend to do better in the second half of the season. I don't know why that would change. This is the best everton side under Moyes's reign in my opinion. As for Gibson, he is a good solid midfielder, nothing special, but doesn't do anything daft and can score a goal.
How True, you are so right... If the season was based on the 2nd half only, I think you will find EFC would have qualified for europe on every occasion since MOYES(10 years) took over, a re occuring stat if there ever was one. GIBSON,,,,Has only ever been on the losing side 4 times in all his prem league games, no matter who he has played for...Thats how crucial he is.
  4. Re: New Year Resolutions Stay firmly away from any electronic gambling machines found inside bookies, pubs and nightclubs - you know the ones I mean! I dont know you, but i mean well when i write this. The CRACK COCAIN of betting, you should aim for this one in your list more than any other, for your sake, your families sake... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make this number 1...This will cause agonising pain if you continue.. For every £10 you put in, the machine is a 1.02 chance to take that £10 off you. That is what the odds are. GL M8

  5. Re: Everton v Wigan Athletic > Boxing Day

Everton far too short again here. Both to score, Everton to win by one, and Everton to win from behind would be the bets I'd be looking at. Maybe over 2.5 goals.... If it weren't for the Everton absentees. I definitely think Wigan are back able at that price, and this is the time of year I suspected all along Everton may run out of steam... Most goals second half screams out at me too for some reason.
If gibson gets his card turned over, Defensivley I dont see them conceding, Wigan wont be able to break them down IMO, so nil to wigan is a good starting point IMO. But ill wait.
  6. Re: Everton v Wigan Athletic > Boxing Day It will be interesting to see if Gibson gets away with his red card tomorrow. Think i will wait for now. He was crucial to EFC on sat, in the deep midfield position. Hibbert Coleman Fellani Mirallas all definately out, with maybe Gibson, Jagielka filling in at right back was a strange 1 on saturday, especially with Neville available, he may change this against KONE. I will wait until I hear the team news before commiting.

  7. Re: XMAS stories and tales of past experiences within Horse Racing. Part 2 of the above story… After the Cambridgeshire, Lord H planned to strike while the iron was hot…and try and get some black type, so they found an entry in a Group 3 at the San Siro a few weeks later. The plans were set to take the filly by road on the Thursday arriving in Milan on Friday, so I travelled with VB and the travelling HL, but booked a ticket leaving Milan on the Sunday night arriving back in Heathrow. So after a night over in France, we arrived in Milan Friday afternoon, stretched the filly out and got her comfortable, then checked into the Hotel, a comfortable place but me and VB had to share a twin room due to a mix up, but that was fine. Now VB could drink most people under the table, and still get up the next day and run a marathon if needed….So we went out into Milan for something to eat, then hit the bars, around 1am, me and the other guy had enough, well and truly, but VB carried on drinking and looking for some female company… About an hour or two after I got to bed, I heard him coming in, but he had company with him, so I tried to ignore, but you just cant,. Human nature I guess no matter how hard you try and go back to sleep. After about 5 mins, all hell broke loose, there were screams, my initial thought was he had been stabbed or something, so I flicked on the lights, and there stood in the middle of the room was a “lady boy” starker’s, this was my first and only time I have ever seen such a sight, she/he was screaming and shouting in Italian and broken English, VB was sitting on the bed naked, looking at his hands in total shock… She/He started getting dressed but wanted paying, and VB refusing, with me in the middle, in the end I gave over 200k in lire, which was about £100, once he/she had gone we never said a word, apart from we’ll sort it out tomorrow. The next day we talked about what happened and he knew she/he was a prostitute but was son convincing the make up and everything else fooled him until his hands started to explore, the rest is best forgotten. Although I still have a laugh about the situation every now and again. Anyhow we took it easy on the Saturday, went back and forward to the Track to check on the filly, then Sunday came, as ever it was heavy ground in Milan, I don’t think its ever different.. We were there for enjoyment really not gambling but we had decided to try and get £500 on to cover our expenses as we thought it was well in her range, now in Milan there stands a few bookmakers but its mainly tote run, and to be honest she was bigger at 2/1 with the bookmakers than the tote, this was about 6/4, but I was not so confident of being paid out with the bookmakers if she won, I just thought the tote was the better option and I could only speak a few words of Italian, so a million lire got passed over to the tote.. The race itself was pretty simple, she loved the ground and under hands n heels won easily. Eventually getting just over evens for our £500 I picked that up, said my goodbyes, (they were planning to leave that evening and arrive late Monday night back in ilsley). I jumped a taxi and was off to the airport. They won a few more times with the filly, She eventually finished her career on 105 and winning a Group 2 at Sandown in the process, a great effort from a filly that only a few years before started her winning off 47.

  8. Re: Chelsea v Aston Villa > Sun 23rd December This game is easy to sum up. IMO Chelsea have been around the world, and a heavy match at leeds in the last 10 days, This has to take it out of you, 1.38 NO THANKS. Aston Villa on the other hand have hit form, and are playing some very nice football, they could easily upset here, and they will make it very difficult today. Lay 1.38 Chelsea, 38 points, Obviousley, the longer Chelsea arnt in front, the price gets bigger, so have your back out plan ready. GL ALL

  9. Re: Swansea City v Manchester United > Sun 23rd December

This IMO will be a very open game, as for me Swansea cant tighten up, they tried against spurs, but got nowere, there is no doubt they look better coming forward, and the fans will expect them to have a go from the off. Man utd on the other hand are scoring goal for fun at the moment, and I cant see this stopping today. With City making hay yesterday, Utd will want to get it done here. My bets are as follows: 7 points over 2.5 goals in first half Coral n exchanges 4/1 10 points over 2.5 goals in the second half 12/5 most firms 17 points over 3.5 goals in the game 2.45 exchanges, 11/8 most firms GL all
Just to give some insight on a BACK OUT PLAN at 1-1 on 29 mins..the following happens 1.11 over 2.5 goals, on the match 1.5 over 3.5 goals on the match 4/1 and 5/2 (7 points n 10 points for 2nd half), huge profit on your trade out, and it does not matter which way it goes between 30 mins and 45 mins, and a free bet for 10 points the 2nd half goals. 11/8 at 17 points and trading out at 1.5, and seeing a decent profit, and it does not matter which way it goes. Myself I have now finished on this game, 34 points back, and a guaranteed profit...No matter which way it goes, Sit back and enjoy the game. GL all
  10. Re: BBOTD Sunday 23rd December

13.30 Thurles Midnight Game 1pt win @ 1\2 Bet365 BOG Clear top rated on official figures but does have to give 10lb and more to the others. Really good win last time and should now step up to listed race class with ease and run away with this. Did struggle last year at top level. Davy Russell on board the Mullins horse for Gigginstown Stud.
A shortie, but a winner is a winner, wd
  11. Re: BBOTD Sunday 23rd December

12.30 Thurles - 1pt win Nora's Fancy @ 9/2 (Bet365) Is a 126-rated hurdler so the fact she runs off 114 in her first handicap chase today should give her a good chance. She hasn't been disgraced in four starts over fences so far, beaten no further than 12l on her first three runs over the larger obstacles. Her run here two starts ago was possibly her best as she faced a good horse in a 128-rated chaser. She's also gone well here before on her only other start at the track so that suits and it's highly possible that her poorer effort last time was due to the race coming just seven days later than her aforementioned run here. She's been freshened up subsequently and the visor has been applied for the first time. Looks to have a rock solid chance when you put it all together.
    Excellent stuff..wd
  12. Re: BBOTD Sunday 23rd December

1:00 Thurles - Whiskey and Red - Back Has been running well recently and had been experiencing bear misses until atoning for those when winning lto. This isn't easy but he's the form pick of the race and if he travels like he has been doing then he'll have every chance 1pt win @ 15/8 Bet365 BOG
wd..Thank DR..for his move in the straight
  13. Re: BBOTD Sunday 23rd December

*Robertstown Rover > Thurles 1:00 > WIN @ 7/2 Paddy Power BOG* Robertstown is an area near my parish back home in Limerick, but this horse has an exceptional chance to follow up here. It bolted up last time out in a decent handicap, winning by 12 lengths on heavy going over this trip. Is up 7 pounds, but has a 5 pound claimer on board, is bottom weight here, has heavy ground again, and a repeat performance should see it win. Whiskey And Red is the favourite because Davy Russell is on board and was impressive last time out, but my selection looks better treated and should be favourite for me.
UL,,,just run out of it, by a very good jockey manouvre on the winner
  14. Re: Jump Racing ~ Sunday 23rd December

1.00 Thurles - 1pt win Spiker The Biker @ 25/1 (Bet365) Just looks a touch on the overpriced side to me at 25/1. Although he was well-held last time out that came without the blinkers on and they are back on today. They were on for his two best runs of this season - the first over hurdles when a decent 4th (not far at all behind today's favourite albeit off better terms) and then he outran his odds in a very stiff task two starts back. He finished 5th of 14 and ultimately had no chance considering it wasn't a handicap and the first three home were rated 132, 145 and 135. My selection runs in a handicap off 94 today and with the blinkers back on might just cause a few surprises at a big price.

  16. Re: XMAS stories and tales of past experiences within Horse Racing. Hopefully this is not too long.. Back in the mid to late 80’s, I was working in the Wiltshire/Oxfordshire area, I had made a couple of mates who worked in Racing. One (I will just give his initials VB) worked in West Ilsley at Major Hern’s stable. It was around the end of that decade that the transition from the Major was being passed to a new trainer Willie Hastings-Bass(WHB), but as he was to be the trainer of the Queens horses,WHB was a little plain, shall we say. WHB was though from the aristocracy, he was in fact the a godson of the queen. So up popped the title “Lord Huntingdon”, That title fitted like a glove. Although he was pure blue blood, a nicer man to his staff you could wish to meet. Although IMO as a trainer of horses he was not as good as the Major. It was a particular nasty episode, of which the whole story is told in ’BETRAYED’ the autobiography of the Major, which is a fantastic read, and I recommend it. But a story of one particular filly shows Lord’H’s insight for planning ahead. The filly was Penny Drops, that my mate VB looked after. At the backend of 1992 as a 3yo, penny won a hcap off 54 at Nott, very easily over a mile ridden by the champion apprentice of that year David Harrison who was attached to the yard, VB and myself had a good day out. But the next day, VB said that the boss had asked him “how much more improvement did he think was in the filly”, a stone or more was the answer, given the right conditions, We’ll see Lord H said. Anyhow she had a few more runs that season running ok, rising to 67. Over that winter is was planned to bring her back late, and start her season in June of 93. But she would be ready to attack from the off as the plan was the “Cambridgeshire” of that year, she was due to have 3 or 4 races over a 6 week period to get her mark up to the high 70’s, she duly won first time out and after the 3rd run in this period she was up to 79. It was still a couple of months before the race, but it was felt 79 was borderline, but had made it in the past, and she was going to have a couple of more runs before that, but she was given a couple of weeks out in the field, before starting back in training. That was when we started our assault on the Ante-post market, early quotes we were taking 50/1, then before she ran again was still getting 33/1, and the £20e/w bets were stacking up. She was due to return on the 18th of Sept in a big hcap at Newbury and she fired up for this race over a mile, so we were planning to be on, however I had planned a 2 week holiday in America, leaving on the 17th, returning on October 1st. So we backed her for both races that week, getting the SP at Newbury, plus 25/1 and 20/1, for the big one, but these were the days when if you done a double for the same horse, you got both prices..I.e 3/1 n 10/1 for a £1 would give you £44 for the return if both won Now you will get a percentage. I am convinced to this day, these type of bets we had were one of the main catalysts for the change, in about 1994-95. Anyhow she went off 5/1f for the Newbury race and duly hacked up, but I’m listing on a phone, that’s being held next to a TV at the other end, at around 9am in the morning. That was weird. This win obviously give great hope for the big one, but a 5lb penalty would take her to 84(37lb rise in a year, as her first win came off 47) giving her a run, added to that we were sitting on more ante post vouchers the majority of which were with William Hill at an average of 150/1. However 7 days later was the big Ascot meeting at the end of September and there was a 50k hcap over 7f which was to short, but an excellent way of keeping her ticking over, instead of just running on the gallops and it was decent prize money. The same plan was done e/w ante post for the ascot race and the big 1, with VB doing all the work as I was in the states, but by this time she was down to 12/1 for the Cambridgeshire, she ran on the Saturday, finishing 2nd rattling home at the end at 6/1, so it was all systems go for the following week. I retuned on the Friday, dropping my stuff off, and driving to VB’s house in Ilsley, looking to stay there that night and driving on to Newmarket. However there is a side story here…. On that Friday night there was a small matter of what was called “the battle of Britain”, Lennox Lewis v Frank Bruno, So we decide to go the pub to watch it, so we had a pub full of people who wanted Frank to win, so VB says to me what price Frank?, I said about 6/4.…So he gets up on a chair by the dart board, and puts up 2/1 Frank…So im laughing away, until I see the amount of money is coming across before the fight started he had taken just over a grand…So I know he can cover it, until he says ive only go £50 on me how much you got….I had about £200 plus a couple of hundred in dollars, don’t worry he says Frank wont win, We wont get out of here alive if he does.. So the fight starts and Frank is ahead , im panicking, looks round VB is standing there, but behind him there is a crowd who have no intention of receiving I.O.U’s. To our relief Lennox clocks Frank’s glass chin, and the ref stops it, But that was the worst I have ever felt in my life, because we were in deep **** if Frank had won. Blood would have been everywhere…and most of it ours.. Anyhow the next morning, VB is off to Newmarket in the horse box, and I follow on a couple of hours later, Now we knew that the filly was far better with give underfoot, and right on Q, the heavens opened, changing the ground to near enough soft, we did not back her at the racecourse, to this day I don’t know why, we could have had the money on from the night before, but I guess it was just nerves pacing around, looking at the clock…She was though backed, and backed heavily, maybe the high st bookmakers looking down the barrel of a gun at their liabilities, but she went off 7/1 fav, and we never ever had a moments worry, taking it up 2 out, she made a hot hcap into a procession winning by 6l, and the stable had the 2nd at 33/1 owned by the Queen. We got back that night taxied it into Newbury and drank till we could drink no more…The next Monday morning, I went into every bookmaker to pick up our money and cheques, with rubbing some salt in the wound of William hill’s…wearing a horse blanket around my shoulders, saying “WILLIAM HILL CAMEBRIDGESHIRE WINNER”, that was a truly you’ve been had statement. Part 2 of this story to follow……..

  17. As I suggested, for the few days over xmas I thought it may be a good idea to share some experiences we have all had within the sport over the years. Good,Bad or indifferent, those that made you laugh, cry or you felt priviledged to be there to witness, Gambling stories, those that were succesful, those that you think even to today, what if!, maybe someone you met, maybe someone you wish you had not. All contributions appreciated. Thanks Rio PS Ill post one soon.;)

  18. Re: Wigan Athletic v Arsenal > Sat 22nd December

Who ever said Wigan should be 4/1 at home to anyone, especially such a hot n cold side as ARSENAL. They had the freedom of Reading, but here they will be given a rough time in every 50/50. Yes they won there last season(van p, at his best)...But Wigan beat them at their place.. 50 points win WIGAN at 4/1 betfair. 5 points -1 WIGAN 9/1 most bookmakers 5 points WIGAN/WIGAN 9/1 most bookmakers 5 points DRAW/WIGAN 10/1 most bookmakers. GL all
Very even game, Wigan were very unlucky not to get a Draw, 1-0 to the ARRRSSSENNNAAALLL(SPORY PEN)..heard this befor.... Lost 10 points from the above, decent profit if Wigan got that equaliser...or been in front at half time,,,big miss by KONE gl all
  19. Re: Jump Racing ~ Saturday 22nd December

12.55 Ascot: Okafranca' date= 6/1 Boylesports, win Okafranca is bidding for his hat trick today. His last two runs have been over today's distance on soft ground. Lto he won by 1¼L. He was in mid-division until before three out when he started to make progress and he got to the lead well before two out. He jumped the last two well but he started to lose concentration and looked like he would be caught but he had plenty left in the tank and he picked up again close home. He has been put up eight pounds for that win but I think he could still have a bit in hand over the handicapper. Trainer Jim Old is in good form with 2 winners from 6 runners this month. Jockey Mark Grant is also in good form, with 4 winners from just 15 rides this month. He has a 100% SR on this horse, having been on board for his last two runs. Trainer and jockey have a good partnership, with a 22% SR for a lsp of £18.75. 14.00 Ascot: Trustan Times, 10/3 William Hill, win Trustan Times is also bidding for his hat trick today. He was impressive lto when he won the Fixed Brush handicap hurdle off top weight on ground similar to what he gets today. This is a step up in class but he should be able to take it in his stride and he should go close. Trainer Tim Easterby is having a decent season over jumps, with a 14% SR and a £9.33 lsp. Jockey Dougie Costello has ridden this horse five times, winning twice and placing twice and he is in decent form. 14.35 Ascot: Hey Big Spender, 4/1 BetVictor, win Hey Big Spender is making his seasonal reappearance today. He was last seen winning a grade 3 handicap carrying top weight back in January. He is just one pound higher today. He has won fto before and his stable is in decent form so his fitness shouldn't be an issue. Today's ground should suit as he has won on heavy and soft in the past. Trainer Colin Tizzard is having a good season with a 16% SR for a £17.48 lsp. His son Joe is in the saddle. He has won on this horse six times. 15.10 Ascot: Cause Of Causes, 16/1 BetVictor, e/w & Rigidity, 25/1 Boylesports, e/w Cause Of Causes finished third lto 3¾L behind the re-opposing Olofi. There is a seven pound swing in the weights and I think today's ground will suit the selection more so he should reverse that form. He is also coming up against Cash And Go and Bothy again. There isn't too much between them going on lto but I'm hopeful Causes will come out on top. Trainer Gordon Elliot sends over just one horse and Davy Condon travels over for this one ride. Rigidity was beaten by just ½L in this race last year. He runs off the same mark today. He finished second lto over hurdles after a good reappearance over fences. He has had two runs this season so he should be in top condition today. The ground shouldn't be a problem as he has won on heavy in the past. Trainer Tim Vaughan is in good form, with 4 winners from 9 runners over the last week. Jockey Richard Johnson is in decent form and has a good record when riding for Vaughan. 15.40 Ascot: El Lobo, 9/1 Bet65, win El Lobo is having just his second start in Britain and is having his first run since Boxing Day last year. He finished third lto in his first start in Britain and he runs from a three pound lower mark today. The ground should be ok as he won on heavy and soft in France. Trainer David Pipe is capable of getting a horse ready for their reappearance having had three winning reappearers this month alone. He is in good form and has a good record at Ascot. The booking of AP McCoy also suggests connections are expecting a big run. Pipe and McCoy have a good record together, with a 28% SR and a lsp of £19.02.
What a fantastic bloody right up, you desreve a big....:clap Even better if you get some winners
  20. Re: To Paul and other Moderators...Idea for a thread, Please give feed back.

Myself and the missus are off to see the Hobbit tomorrow mate' date=' hope it's as good as the reviews.[/quote'] Its good....Few old faces return, plus a few new ones, youd never expect to be in there, and links to the previous films. One thing. I went to see it on a Odeon, it was 30 mins diff between advertised and movie starting(thats the longest ive waited), so if u can reserve seats in the cinema your going to,,its a good idea;)
