  1. Re: Dumb Tournament Plays

I think that's where my confusion is: were you playing this as a bluff? (in which case you dont want the blinds getting in a cheap call) or as a semi-bluff for value? (in which case as you said you got your answer from his 5bet) Just intrigued. I've been away from poker for 12months or so and currently stuck playing low stacks. Just trying to get my poker brain firing again before I step back up a level from the mind numbing abc I'm playing now.
You are correct that I'm playing it as a semi-bluff I guess. I'm happy when raising for everyone to fold since I'll take the blinds and antes with no flop. I'm also happy for the blinds to call since I'll have position and most likely a better hand. It just got messy when the aggro player with position on me 3-bet. Most times I'd just dump the hand to his 3-bet, but with the Ace blocker and his aggro play I thought (totally wrongly) that I could get him to fold.
  2. Re: Dumb Tournament Plays

Is the main reason that you can min bet late on' date=' but not early, because late you are no longer offering large implied odds, when you are early?[/quote'] That's a very good question. The non-scientific answer is that people tend to fold more later on. I guess you are correct on the reason for that - stacks are shallower and there are lower implied odds.
  3. Re: Dumb Tournament Plays

I have to question 3 or 4 betting A5 from early position. I appreciate that it is late in the tournament and theirs lots of stealing' date=' but unless you have a great read on the button you are giving up a lot of your stack with a hand thats easily dominated by any big pair or ace.[/quote'] Firstly, I don't think I played this great for the reason I said (that I'd not seen him being capable of 5-bet-folding, ie he's only 5-betting for value as far as I know). However, this is 6-max, so really there's no such thing as early position, it's more mid-position in regular terms. The fact that it's with A5 is irrelevant seeing as the whole play is a bluff, it could be any two cards.
  4. Re: Dumb Tournament Plays It was $22 rebuy with not many players left, lots of stealing/re-stealing going on. Ok, reasons for the min raise. It allows you more flexibility when you get 3-bet. If you raise bigger, the 3-bet will be bigger, and you generally have to make a decision for your stack. Min-raise and you get 3-bet smaller, you lose less when you fold, you are able to 4-bet (and in this case) 6-bet fold. And one of the big advantages of min-raising is that the blinds (particularly the big blind) will feel like they are priced in to call with all kinds of crap. This is great for us as they are now playing out of position with hands that they cannot possibly be profitable with.

  5. Re: Daily MTT Winnings August 2011 $1109.93 - I normally hate doing chops especially when I'm easily the best player, but the tournaments had been going 13hrs and we all had just over 100BBs (1st-4th had only 2BBs difference), and I need sleep :lol Untitled-28.png

  6. Re: Dumb Tournament Plays I did get out with a playable stack but I think the 6-bet bluff should only really be used if you are certain that your opponent is capable of a 5-bet fold, which I wasn't sure of.

  7. Re: Dumb Tournament Plays The min raise is the only worthwhile raise in late stage tournament poker and I will argue with anyone who thinks differently. I probably should have let the hand go after his 5-bet though :lol
