  2. Re: Big Meetings Postdata Am not bothering with Galway as the racing isn't what I expect of a top class meeting regardless of the hype the local media (in Ireland) make of it. Just for noting, I'm not betting on these but these are Postdata's selections anyway. Meeting already underway. First race loser. 4.00 Discoteca 4.30 Kallellshan 5.00 Line Drummer 5.35 Prince Chapparal 6.10 Kanes Pass 6.40 Hay Point 7.10 Scienter I'll keep a record of how the meeting goes, but it's on until Sunday. Goodwood is different and that's starts tomorrow.

  5. Re: Cycling 2012 Thank you Peter Sagan for helping me get back most of my money today. I messed it up with Greipel and for once Goss showed almost something. I don't know what Cavendish meant at all by being worried about him. That was last year, admittedly. It's been great fun this thread this last few weeks, we should try and keep it going and not just for Le tour. Eneco Tour and Vuelta, anybody? I've really enjoyed the race this year. As I said earlier I'd like to think Sky's new dominance will shake up the other teams and help raise the sport to a new level although they'll need serious money to do so. Disappointing that the rules give Radioshack Nissan the team award as this year if anything we've seen a tremendous team performance by Sky, a relentless slow and steady crushing of all opposition. Six stage wins, by three different riders and the final three stages as well. Cavendish playing a much secondary role and he still wins three stages. Froome looks like he should be a match for any future Grand Tour although the Vuelta may come too soon for him and Wiggins while dominating the TT shows he can't be dropped that easily on the climbs. Shame we had no Contador or Shleck, let's hope they're all fit and able next year. Having those two around will certainly liven up the climbs. Peter Sagan is not only just behind the best sprinters but he can also climb. At the moment he should take any one day classic on offer. Really looking forward to seeing what he can do in the years to come. Greipel doing what Cavendish's old HTC team did so well in the past as well. Added to that Voeckler coming to life for the second part of the race. It seems a long time ago now Cancellara won the prologue. Interesting dilemma for Sky next year if Froome is still with them and there's less TTs and a couple of mountain top finishes at least. I wonder what the strategy will be there then. You'd expect Wiggins to want to defend. Anyway, all for another day.

  6. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Erhaab I think the cost and hassling of travelling over might put them off. That, and the simple fact is that from a UK angle, most people in the UK, and racehorse trainers are no different, know and even care less about Ireland, whereas the other way around the Irish are well versed about all things in the UK. We get all the UK TV stations and Irish versions of UK tabloids are well read. I'm sure a lot of people in the UK even think Ireland, as a whole island, is part and parcel of the UK, a bit like Scotland. Maybe Mark Johnston and a few others such as Richard Fahey I've noticed recently believe in some races they can mop up occasionally. Mick Channon as well. I think we'll see more of that, other trainers will see a raid as a good potential opportunity with good prize money on offer. If it means for more competitive racing, then that's a good thing. I'm surprised more UK trainers don't make the attempt. In these straightened times, I think trainers need to be thinking a bit more entrepreneurial. Gordon Elliott targeting Perth for example seems to have been very successful. Not sure why Scottish based trainers don't do the return, or do they?

  7. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Good point Erhaab and with the Galway meeting coming up we'll see a handful of quality races against a lot of mediocre dross, split across 7 days. Much too long in my view. I think courses are catering for the fact that the name of the meeting, be it Galway, Punchestown and to a lesser level, but very important locally, 'festival' meetings such as Killarney, Listowel and others across the country, will always attract the paying public who are going for the occasion it is as much as the racing going on. They need then to provide some show-piece racing at each meeting, so the quality races are more spread out. It would be great to have something like a tight Derby/Oaks meeting across two days with a lot more quality racing but to succeed it would have to attract more UK and French horses - and to have to fit into an already well established European racing programme. Not impossible if the right money was on offer. In hindsight, perhaps it should have occurred in the Celtic tiger years and would now be established.

  8. Re: Cycling 2012 I'm glad I left the TT alone but it was enjoyable to watch. Now 6 minutes plus back to the first non Sky rider in the GC is some domination. I wasn't able to get a good place on Betfair overnight on Greipel but I see literally minutes ago Betfred have pushed him out to 4/1 so I'm going for a 1pt bet each way on that price. They're also with Sagan at 14s which does seem generous, again each way, so for a final afternoon flurry, I'll take that as well. Most likely scenario is the two to chase Cavendish home. I really do think Sagan can place and he will be just as motivated and want to show how close he is to the specialist sprinters. With that in mind I'm also laying Goss for a place at or around evens.

  9. Re: Cycling 2012

Two downsides to him winning today are I wasnt on at 10/1 for him to win and it will ruin the price for Sunday's stage. Interesting to hear afterwards that Lotto were saving themselves for Sunday. Once it was clear it might be a sprint then they obviously did try and get Greipel involved but it seemed almost half hearted.
He sure will be. Shame though. I'll think I'll just watch today and tomorrow. Greipel would be value tomorrow if we could get say 4/1 but I don't think we will. Suppose Cavendish will be close to Evens. Perhaps for the TT bookmakers should have enticed us with a 1,2,3,4.

  11. Re: Cycling 2012 Been off-line for most of last two days, changing internet and computers and moving house so missed out on Cavendish yesterday although to be honest as it wasn't a real flat stage I'm not sure if I would have backed him although I said I was going to now upto and including Paris. Does anyone know what price he was pre stage yesterday, just curious. Thanks

  12. Re: Cycling 2012 Fair play to Sky for as you say sucking the air out of any significant competition although it ruined it a bit from a viewing perspective. Nibali looked like a bit of a one trick pony - aim to take something out of them just prior to a descent and then hoping to get away, but he couldn't get away again yesterday and while the cameras panned away from their decent mostly, I think by then he had given up and seemed just content with his podium place. He knew he couldn't break either Wiggins or Froome, not yesterday anyway. Shame he didn't have much support but these guys are on the limit now, not much more to give. Both Wiggins and Froome helped each other out to get back to Nibali's wheel and that just expressed their dominance. At least Nibali tried and fully deserves his podium place Can't see pass much of the same today with Sky keeping it going from the front of the peleton. I hope Nibali has another go though but even if he did something magical both Froome and Wiggins would get it back on Saturday at the TT. As for betting today, I'm going to look at laying someone if they get into a break.

  13. Re: Cycling 2012 Been following Dan martin's daily blog and he's been suffering with a cough and a cold for most of the last 10 days. Just can't see him recovering enough for this test. I've no doubt he'll be a big contender in years to come, starting off with Best Young Rider next year perhaps.

  14. Re: Cycling 2012 I know we said we wouldn't go off topic as this is a betting forum, but it is integral. Yes, legitimate question as the public image of those two is being joined at the hip. Also, slightly throws up in the air again the team classification results. That will have to be adjudicated on now and will they delete Frank's earlier results.

  15. Re: Cycling 2012 Good point addpea, think we've got really use to a HTC train. Bet that peeve'd Cavendish off big time as well. Stages like that should have been his for the taking. Wonder what's going to happen next year, with no Olympics race to worry about, surely he's going to want a lead in but if Sky are still going to be keen to dominate for the yellow jersey, will he be just the water carrier again? I can't see Sky giving up on the yellow jersey after they've just secured it once. Maybe their aspirations will be even higher and they'll aim to go for both jerseys, or at the very least aim to get Cav at least 3/4 stage wins.

  16. Re: Cycling 2012 I'm staying on the Cav Express although Bet 365 went an initial 9/1 last night, but only for a very short time. 3s best now and that's with Paddy Power. That 9/1 looks like being the second major rick of this Tour. I put an offer up at 5s overnight on Betfair but that wasn't taken and he's stuck around the 11/4 mark only with them. Greipel must be the only alternative but he's taken over the Cavendish mantle of being the mostly sub 2/1 favourite for stages such as these. Surely Sagan can't go in again and after yesterday's superlative attempts must now be beginning to flatten, he admitted to as much post race yesterday. Goss has been a perennial disappointment all Tour and can't be approached with any confidence. Again, all we need Cav to do is exactly as he did 2 weeks back now on stage 2, get a lead in from behind Greipel's team. 3pts win Mark Cavendish Paddy Power @ 3/1 As I've been really impressed with the in running liquidity on Betfair I'm going to have a dabble now on Sagan, 10.50, and Edvald Boasson Hagen, 60.00. I don't think either will win but I'm banking on both trading at a lot less than those prices and I'll trade out if I can do so. My reasoning is I think that both could play a part in proceedings today at some point. If they do, then the market will react.

  17. Re: Cycling 2012 After timing I know but when I saw he had got into the breakaway, I went in 1pt each way Luis Leon at 8s. Then I felt Sagan wouldn't survive with them on the ascent, so laid him for 1 point at 4.50. Disaster then as he did so, and went as low as 1.4 when he was part of the two man lead. The man surely is devastating, and only 23, but my pocket is glad today he couldn't finish it off. Just seen this on Cycling News 'Funny how lead group didn't puncture. Sagan eats nails, and dropped a few?' It does look like some bystanders put something on the road after the leading group went through. All in all another stage ticked off for Sky. Even before tackgate nothing was happening on the final climb, Sky had it well and truly covered. Some sight as well seeing Cavendish leading them onto the mountain.
