  1. Re: Austria v Croatia (Sunday) Group Stage Bet 3- Croatia 10/10 NAP Originally got this price at 2.06 last week on Betfair and looks the bet of the group stages. Austria are a very poor team who are only here because they are the hosts. Croatia have a very gifted team and could go all the way if Petric or Olic can step up to fill Eduardo's boots. With the creativity of Modric and Kranjcar in midfield they have too much class for Austria and at evens look the bet of the group stages.

  2. Re: bets for euro 2008 Ante-post bets- France @ 9/1 to win Euro 2008- reasoning in ante-post thread, feel there is value in the French who have a solid experienced base and a mix of youth in Benzema and Nasri. Look for Ribery to shine in this tournament. Top goalscorer- Mario Gomez @ 17/1- 28 goals in 32 matches for Stuttgart in comparison with Mirsoslav Klose who has been majorly off form this season and while he is a proven international goalscorer at 10.5 I think Gomez can outscore him at better odds. Also with Germany having the easier half of the draw I think they can get at least to the semi-finals which would give them at least 5 games assuming they top their group and avoid Portugal- including a game against weak home nation Austria so I think with that in mind Gomez will be up there.

  3. Re: Portugal vs Turkey, 07.06.2008 at 20:45 Group Match Bet 2) Portugal @ 1.80 6/10 Portugal kick off their campaign tonight against Turkey who they have defeated in their last 5 outings. While the Turks boast quality such as Emre in midfield and Villarreal's Nihat up front, they are inconsistent and a bit dodgy at the back going from a 4-1 win in Athens in qualifying to draws in Malta and Moldova. Portugal's 4-2-3-1 formation allows their wingers a lot of freedom and this is where their creativity comes from, Ronaldo on one wing could be joined by Quaresma, Simao or Nani on the other in an area where Portugal have an embarassment of riches. With the experience and class of Fernando Meira at the back and Chelsea's pairing of Carvalho and Ferreira Portugal will be solid but their weakness looks their 1 in attack. Postiga has never fully convinced at the top level although did strike against England four years ago and the gauntlet will be again thrown to 31 year old Nuno Gomes who has 28 goals in 68 caps. Portugal's recent form against Turkey and having the current best player in the world in Ronaldo who can win games on his own means 4/5 should be taken. However, opening games can often throw up some shocks and the Turks do have the firepower in Tuncay and Nihat to score and Portugal's qualifying was anything but smooth with 6 draws and a loss in 14 games so I would be weary of maximum stakes here. Tonights game could tell us a lot about Portugal's chances of winning the competition. :ok

  4. Re: Switzerland vs Czech Rep., 07.06.2008 at 18:00 Group Match Bet 1) Switzerland Draw No Bet @ 1.95 5/10 This has all the makings of a tight game with the Swiss not having conceded a goal at the last World Cup, eventually being knocked out on penalties by the Ukraine after a bore 0-0. The Czechs as has been well documented are without key creative threat Rosicky and with Baros out of form they could struggle for goals and Martin Fenin may replace the Pompie striker. At 35, Jan Koller's best days are surely behind him and with home advantage and the potent Alexander Frei up front who has 33 goals in 58 caps I think the Swiss could nick a tight game in front of their fans or at least avoid defeat which would see your stake returned. :ok

  5. Re: Racing & Football Outlook- Euro 2008 Betting Guide

From the racing post Euro 2008 special i found that one of the most interesting articles was tournament scoring pattern trends. I know a lot of members on here like to bet on under and over 2.5 goals so it is worth taking note that from Euro 1980 to Euro 2004 the following occurred: 1st group game - average goals 2.0 with 72% of games under 2.5. 2nd group game - average 2.3 goals with 60 % under 2.5. last group game - average 3.0 goals with only 35% under 2.5 knockout stages - average 2.0 goals with 72% of games under 2.5. Hope this helps people that didn't see the Racing post special that like betting on number of goals per game. The basic summary is unders for first group game and in the knockout stages and over 2.5 for the last group game.
Yeah i saw those stats in the Ladbrokes Euro 2008 guide, Kevin Pullein mentioned it. Interesting and certainly makes sense.
  6. Re: Top Scorer Mario Gomez Top scorer 18. With the Germans likely to go to at least the semis, this looks like a solid bet as the Stuttgart striker has had a fantastic season and has been more prolific than his partner Klose. Austria are a poor team and the Germans could get a couple here. Was also thinking of adding Ballack at good odds but I'll stick with the Bundesliga player of the year for now.

  7. Re: Austria v Croatia Sunday 8th June.. Totally agree WHU punter, ive been saying the same thing over on the Euro 2008 forum, Austria are only in this because they are hosting it. They are a poor side and even their betters players like Wigan's Paul Scharner hasn't joined the squad as he says its a shambles. Croatia are one of the dark horses to win this competition have a lot of quality and even without Eduardo have enough up front to win this. Looks like the bet of the tourney to me at evens and ive already stuck something on them at 2.04 on Betfair, i agree it will go down.

  8. Re: Players to watch... Luka Modric- Spurs have got themselves a gem of a player here and he'll be at the heart of all Croatia's attacking play. Him and Kranjcar offer a big threat from 20-25 yards. Karim Benzema- Really hope Domenech starts him instead of heartless Anelka. Outstanding for Lyon this season and could set this tournament alight up front with Henry. Nasri and Gomis could also impress if given a chance. Mario Gomez- Had a cracking season with Stuttgart and the 22 year old could well be attracting the interests of Europe's elite clubs if he shines here. A value bet for the golden boot at around 20 if he gets the nod ahead of Podolski to partner Klose. Ebi Smolarek- I think Poland will just be edged out in qualifying by Croatia and Germany but Smolarek has the ability to cause top defences problems and struck nine times in qualifying. Arshavin is also a class act but his influence has been hampered by suspension and Russia could be out by the time he returns in the 3rd group game, a class act and will be missed by Russia. Di Natale has been in excellent goalscoring form recently for Italy and I was very impressed by Roman Pavyluchenko when Celtic played Spartak Moscow although I believe he is behind in the pecking order to talented Zenit striker Pavel Pogrebnyak who is an injury doubt for the tournament. Portuguese sitting midfielder Veloso also caught the eye when he played for Sporting Lisbon at Ibrox in the UEFA Cup.

  9. Re: Racing & Football Outlook- Euro 2008 Betting Guide Think ill purchase it as its always interesting to see the bookies views on overall winner and other people's views about who should get through the groups. Thought you'd reply on this Alex as I'm sure I read you saying they had an amazing record of picking Grand National winners, hope they can have a similar success here. Nice one AK, do you get paid for that or what? A cousty wee job that would be ;)

  10. Re: Top Scorer

its all about opions - and on Euro 2008 people have vastly different ones, as this forum shows. For example, I don't think Spain will reach the final, yet many on here think this is their year. RE Germany, the fact dodgy Lehmann is in goal worries me but attacking wise he doesn't enter calculations. As has already been said, Ballack will offer a threat and Schweinsteiger will get forward and get them goals. Don't know much about Gomez but Klose has proven he can do it in the tournaments and Podolski has been on fire in qualifying. If I remember rightly they scored the most goals of any team in qualifying (although 13-0 was one score against San Marino). I think they'll go through all the knock out stages and so their players will have more opportunites to score than those which go home early.
Gomez is a goal machine, he scored 19 goals in 23 games in the Bundesliga and 3 in 4 appearances in the Champions League. According to a Stuttgart fan Klose has had a terrible season but will still definitely start as Low favours the old guard. Klose scored 10 in 24 in the league this season and will probably partner Podolski or Gomez. If Gomez starts the first game ill take him for top scorer.
  11. Re: Ante Post Winner Backed France at 10 on Betfair and think there is some value in this price. The French are in the toughest section with Italy, Holland and Romania. However, they got the better of Italy in the qualifying winning in Paris and drawing away from home. Also think it suits them to have Romania in the opening match. The Romanians topped a qualifying group with the Dutch and should not be under-estimated but I think its still France's easiest game in the section and if they win they can be a bit more relaxed in the next two games where they won't need to go for it. The question mark I had over France was the hunger of guys like Viera and Henry but the Barcelona front-man looks like he'll be moving this summer and what better way to impress possible suitors by showing he's back to his best on the biggest of stages. Ribery has had a good season with Bayern and Benzema could light up this competition if given a chance. He has had an excellent season including some stunning goals in the Champions League against Man Utd and Rangers in particular. I expect them to get out of this group and the price to drop so they could be laid off at lower odds for sure. Also think its value in comparison with other prices, Germany at 4/1 is very short, Joachim Low has been faithful to a lot of the old guard like Jens Lehmann who hasn't featured regularly and while they should cruise through their group there is question marks over whether they are good enough to go the full way. Spain man for man are as good a side in the Euro's but always seem to bottle it so wouldn't be backing them at 6/1 either and think the French are reliable and good enough to be there or thereabouts again.

  12. Re: Euro 2008 Banter Thread I'm supporting Croatia, they have some cracking young players and play good football and their fans are outstanding. Had a soft spot for them since World Cup 98 and always like to see them do well. Felt a bit sorry for them as well with Eduardo getting injured so hope they can rally round and take home the trophy :ok Also be looking out for Poland for Artur Boruc and Sweden for Larsson :)

  13. Re: Group B

hard to dispute what everyone has already said the top two are head and shoulders here with poland well above a poor austria in last. The 1.91 on croatia to beat austria must be bet of the tournament if not year, austria are just awful and croatia are a vastly underrated side.
Totally agree mate, I've been thinking about this game for a while, Croatia are 2.02 on Betfair, they are one of the dark horses for this tournament while Austria by all accounts look a poor team, might have a big bet on this. Germany Croatia Poland Austria
  14. Re: Group A Looks like a tight group this, fancy Portugal and Switzerland to progress at the moment, Switzerland are a good team and as documented the host team always does well and I don't think Austria have enough quality to the Swiss could nick second here.

  16. Re: Chelsea v Manchester United - Champions League Final on Wed 21/5 Have opted for Chelsea to win this at 3.2 in the 90 with small bets at good odds on Chelsea in extra time at 13 and Chelsea to win on penalties at 10.5 which I think is a real possibility. Some people have said take Drogba out of the equation and that is much of Chelsea's attacking threat, I don't think so, Ballack and Lampard are both outstanding goalscoring midfielders who in tight games can pop up in good positions to score from distance or with a header as Ballack showed at Stamford Bridge v Utd. I feel Chelsea's 3 in the middle have the edge over United in this department and I think the odds make the value lie with Chelsea as it should be 50/50 IMO and I just have a feeling having lost out on the league Chelsea could gain revenge here. Will be a tight game and noticed on the Racing Post a lot of bookies said the draw at h/t at evens was a fantastic bet but I think I will just stick with fairly small stakes on Chelsea in the 90 and in et and pens and hopefully enjoy a good game.

  17. Re: UEFA Cup Winner - 2007/8

I placed a small bet on Zenit to win the UEFA Cup just before the second legs. I really thought Getafe would put Bayern out as they had been playing well and the Bavarians looked there for the taking and also if Bayern went out as I expected Zenit's odds would drop considerably. Unfortunately the 6.6 I took has now drifted to 7.2, still think this is too big with four teams left and I think they are better placed to beat Bayern over 2 legs rather than a one off game as they have pace on the counter away from home and no-one likes travelling to Russia. They have put out some impressive sides notably Villarreal so feel they are being a bit underestimated.
