  1. Re: Hand from Luton GUKPT This is an interesting problem. Here is how I, as a relative novice would currently see it, if I had the time to work it all out in a tournament (unlikely).

At the time that you have to decide whether to put your tournament on the line I make the pot about 14,000. You have to put your remaining 7800 in, giving odds of about 1.8/1.

The problem, as I see it is in how many outs that you have that can realistically win the hand.

I would count any diamond as an out. Any King would be a reasonable out as well, because of the nut straight. An Ace may well be an out but if the big stack has pocket Aces then it won’t count. A Queen as an out I’m more dubious about, because the big stack could easily have pocket Aces or Kings.

So, we have the 9 diamonds, 3 Kings that are not a diamond, 3 Aces and 3 Queens ( half an out each, because they might not be good enough?) . That gives 15 outs.

Now then, do you count the cards that you haven’t yet seen or the cards remaining to be dealt, in calculating pot odds?

If it is a ten handed table then 29 cards remain and 15 of them are outs. Pot odds 1.93/1 which is not quite what the pot is offering. Allowing some lee way, then at best you are getting only what you deserve. Is that good enough to put your tournament on the line? If we use the cards not yet seen to calculate, then there are 47 cards and 15 outs, pot odds 3.13/1 which is a bad position. Which do we use? Either way you don’t seem to have any real edge mathematically.

Opposite problems arise though, from the fact that I have seen Phil Ivey say, in an interview at a tournament, that at the level he plays at, pot odds don’t come into it, he plays the player. Also I have seen Annette Obestrad and Jimmy Fricke repeatedly hit those magic cards as real underdogs in tournaments and make fortunes. I don’t know what the answer is to be honest.

  2. Re: "The Mole" feature in this month`s InsidePoker Magazine Mole, I loved the example of a recent hand that you played in that article. That is poker at a level that I didn’t even know existed, until you started posting in the mole thread on here. I think that what you have managed to achieve is quite amazing. :notworthy

Have a look at some of the helicopter crashes on filecabinet or youtube before you make a final decision on the chopper though. Your missus may have a point.

  3. Re: Virgin wanting ID proof before withdrawals I am somewhat reluctant to post further on this subject; because it may well be that some are not quite as aware as others, as to what might actually might be going on here.

I’m certainly not trying to rattle anyone’s cage. However, for some reason I cannot help myself. There is absolutely no malice in it.

If I can put my concern’s over very basically.

They are, that there is no upside at all for the genuine customer, in this supposed regulation.

The best that the genuine customer can hope to obtain, in this situation, is the money that they are rightfully entitled to. There is no real upside for them, because they are only entitled to, exactly, what they are entitled to.

Critically however, there is a potential downside.

The best that the opposite side of the equation ( i.e. the poker site, regulatory authority, or the government that created it ) can hope for, is that the customer cannot satisfy the regulatory requirements and hence their money is forfeited. Where does that money end up? Who does it go to? Who does it benefit?

The true difference is, that there are no negatives at all for the opposite part of this equation, because it is the customer that shoulders all of the risk. Right from the moment of deposit. That is why the regulation should start there or better yet, well before it..

Sending such sensitive documentation away (which could be used for identity theft), to the supposed authority, merely increases the risk to the customer even more.

What a surprise then, that the real risk in this particular regulation is directed only toward the customer.

  4. Re: Virgin wanting ID proof before withdrawals No. Not at all. You have missed the point. Any real regulation should start from the point of deposit. Suggesting that it should start from the the point of return just displays the almost complete corruption of the system.

  5. Re: Virgin wanting ID proof before withdrawals I'm not being funny Mr V, but it seems that you cannot see what is really going on here. Why are they authorised to debit my money (totally without those, supposedly, vital checks), but not allowed to credit my money back to me? Something does not add up here.

  6. Re: Virgin wanting ID proof before withdrawals I’m a virgin media customer and I also occasionally play on Virgin Poker.

Virgin Media did not require me to send such sensitive information to them before they started billing me. Not surprisingly, neither did Virgin Poker require it before I handed my money over, into their trust.

So, why would Virgin Poker need such sensitive information from me, before they would return my money to me? That is money that is rightfully mine.

Oh , that’s right , it is because they are based in Malta and that is the new requirement there. How very convenient.

It’s no wonder at all then, that Branson can afford his own Island, with a scam like that going on.

  7. Re: WSOP - If You Had a Choice? I sort of agree and yet disagree. The main event, now, just seems like a lottery to me. If an established name wins it, they will inevitably be promoted as a superstar. If an unknown player wins it they will probably be seen as having been lucky or because their established name coach was so great. If I had the buy in I would prefer to spend it on the Monte Carlo Millions, but as that takes place in a Principality, in the very heart of Rip Off Europe, I dread to think what the accommodation costs would be. Regardless of that, just look at the adverts that appear nightly on TV, presumably at great expense, from the likes of Full Tilt and Pokerstars. Basically, these are all showing people who have done well at some WSOP event at some time. It seems to be an industry recognised standard. I’m not saying it is right that it should be recognised as that, simply that it is currently, the way it is. The main event just seems to be the epitome of it.

  8. Re: WSOP - If You Had a Choice? In my current circumstances, if I could even dream of making the sort of sums that the mole seems to make playing cash games, I wouldn’t even consider going to Vegas.I would be ecstatic with that amount of income.

On the other hand, if I was actually making the sort of sums that the mole is making, then I would probably think that my undoubted talent could and should, be recognised by a much wider audience and the main event seems an ideal platform for that.

If I had won a package, then I would definitely have cashed it in and used the money to play at higher levels than I feel comfortable playing at the moment, purely to gain experience. Bear in mind, that I have never, definitively, won an MTT in my life.

I don’t believe there is a definitive right or wrong answer here. It will always depend on what feels right for the individual involved, when they come to their decision.

  9. Re: PL v Blonde - Pokertrillion - Leg 2 - Wednesday 25th June Apologies, I did intend to play in these and voted in the original poll, but I withdrew the money I originally deposited for them, because I wasn’t prepared to comply with their request for proof of my identity and I wasn't sure what the repurcussions might be. I quite enjoy the inter forum challenges but I'm afraid I won’t be joining in with this one now.

  10. Re: Laddies Billionth Hand Freeroll ***Earn Your Points 14/06/08!!!!*** Bad luck uhadzflo. I went out in 85, but I was never really in the hunt after the first hour though. In the BB, dealt AKo, with stack size only about 4BB left and the blinds due to increase in a minute.Someone raises for about my remaining stack size, someone else re raises him all in (so I figure a chance to treble up for me). I go all in, the original raiser folds. Re raiser shows QQ. Neither of us catch anything. Thank you and goodnight. Best of luck if anyone is still in.

  11. Re: PL Scottish Championships Exclusive on Paradise Poker in June/July I had a similar problem, apparently because I was originally a Sporting Odds customer. I’ve no idea if that is the reason for your problem though. A lady on live chat on the sportingbet site ( which I could log into but not the poker site), sent me a download link for the software and it is working perfectly at the moment. Support on sportingbet was very quick for me, maybe they are having server problems or something. It may be worth trying again later.

  12. Re: Hornet's Strategy Questions. Part 7 This example has got me thinking about things that I would never have considered before. I’m certainly no expert, but I would almost certainly have checked in that situation. Your position at the table has meant that you have no choice but to pay at least the BB amount, regardless of whether you actually get to see the flop or not. Your opponents have put no extra charge on you doing that, which in your position both at the table and in stack size is a real positive. Why not take advantage of it, at no extra charge? Once you have the extra information that the flop will give you, then you can react from there. Even if you end up checking and folding to a bet post flop, it has cost you no extra to do that and you are still in there with a chance, however slim.
