  1. Re: Food at racecourses An interesting thread. I still go racing when I can and really begrudge paying the inflated prices for food & drink - we have always said that gamblers are not like normal people though, think nothing of losing a few hundred on the races but would NEVER pay £8.50 for Ascot fish and chips..! It is the same everywhere though. At the Breeders' Cup, it's $8 for domestic beers and $9 for imports. At the Arc it's €6 for basic Kronenberg and €7 for a 1664. At both locations, these are only the Coca cola size cans. Just about always place the bets before I go to the course or use the phone while at the course but really miss that great feeling when collecting a stash of cash from an on-course bookie. It just isn't the same and just becomes a bunch of numbers.

  2. Re: Flat Racing - 10th October I really feel that today's posts deserve some serious praise. REDOUBTABLE pointing out a 10/1 winner, CHARLIE WONG finding winners at 8/1 and 3/1 and finally TED writing a great case for a 25/1 winner (which I backed based on his write-up). Fantastic stuff and I'm glad TED didn't take a sabattical before today's racing. Very well done..!!

  3. Re: UK Cards US Style ! The good thing about the US racecards and the DRF is that they come out the day before the racing so you have time to study the evening before the race meet. And with the amount of information available, you need the time... I tend to listen to the Americans we go with for their views on races with no European runners.

  4. Re: UK Cards US Style ! I have been racing a few times in the States and have the race cards at home. The USA race cards do provide a user guide so if you have any questions after you have had a read through, let me know and I should be able to answer them off.

  5. Re: UK Cards US Style ! These are really good but I have always struggling to take in all of the information available in US cards (at least we don't have to worry about the sectionals as well). Someone has put in a great deal of effort converting everything for the US market. TRNi do show some UK racing in the States - Royal Ascot mainly. They must be looking to expand the coverage further.

  6. Re: Windsor Mon 19th July

6.10 URBAN SPACE has a decent record round here with 4 runs 2-1-2-5 all over 12f. This race is over 2f shorter however i wouldnt be too worried about the distance to be honest. It won off 63 here last year and with Kieran Fox's 5lb claim runs off 61 in this race. Has to have a decent chance off this mark and 2 reasonable runs to date this season should put it spot on. 7.10 MAMA LULU 2nd on both starts so far can go one better here. Drawn high which is ideal and Hayley Turner in the saddle. 7.40 Hannon has 3 in this race and could finish 1-2-3 easily. Poppy Seed won easily last time out and Richard Hughes gets this ride out of the 3. Will have a look at this one on the day.
Great selections there Stan.. Would not even have looked at Urban Space without your post and that more than paid for the evening. I also backed Poppy Seed and Rio's selection at Beverley - Carlito's Spirit - great night. As for Our Drama Queen, you are correct, absolutely nothing was coming off the pace for the last 2 races; Blissful Moment and Lunar Victory had the previous race completely to themselves. BM was hard at work a long way out and I thought LV might just get there but was outbattled by Ryan Moore. A fantastic night - really glad I read your post..
  7. Re: Windsor Mon 19th July Taking a trip down to Windsor this evening and will have a play on the board selections for the 1st 2 races: URBAN SPACE (12/1) and TALENTI (7/2). I like LUNAR VICTORY (3/1 SJ) in the 20:10, the maiden form looks pretty solid and maybe he had a minor setback after his last race, when made a strong favourite. As has been pointed out, Stoute's stable is out of form but will help to keep the price up for LV. If all else fails, I'll try and blast my way out of trouble in the last on OUR DRAMA QUEEN. Won cosily at Newbury last time and a 7lb rise could be fair, probably should have won here in her previous run. Taken 9/4 on offer at Sporting.

  8. Re: Newcastle 26 June

Northumberland Plate Ok I'm clearly not alone in thinking this, but it has to be Overturn surely? I had the pleasure of taking in all 3 of his recent races at Ayr (although only the Champion Hurdle actually warranted that description). This horse has become a front-running machine. The weight probably just caught up with him when finishing 2nd last time out (he was 18lbs worse off against the winner - who also had a 7lb claimer on board - than in the Champion Hurdle), but he won't have that problem at Newcastle. What I've also observed is that he's not even that fluent a hurdler - indeed he hit a few quite hard. More than anything, it was his flat speed which was winning him those races. Newcastle's not a wholly dissimilar track to Ayr - both left-handed, long run in, although is perhaps a bit more challenging. If he runs, Overturn has to be Saturday's nap for me (and for the traders out there, probably one to back to lay).
Well done Al, should never have doubted you. Great ride by Eddie Ahern.
  9. Re: Newcastle 26 June I was keen on this one but it will be difficult to gain a front-running position after being drawn in the car park (21 of 21). The draw is really important in this race, even over 2 miles. May still be able to win but I'll skip the race now.

  10. Re: Windsor 21st June (eve)

19:10 Windsor No prices yet of course for a 2yo maiden race over 6f, but one horse that went into my notebook was Sylvester Kirk's Ad Vitam and will hopefully get a 20/1 + price for him. Raced here over 5f in April in its only start to date and was in the rear, running very green until the last part of the race where he made eyecatching headway from miles back. Did finish 15l behind, but a horse that did well in the Norfolk stakes at Ascot, and behind a couple more winners. Sylvester Kirk's juveniles have been in decent form, with a +22.08 for a £1 level stake, with 4 places from 22runs. This horse has been a non-runner a few times with a self-cert. May mean they've been waiting for a more suitable race. Perhaps Monday night at Windsor will be the night.
    Just gone 50/1 @ Corals.
  11. Re: Redcar 31st May

Graham Gibbons has had a very strong month riding 21 winners in total and he has a good set of rides to build on that on the final day of the month. He holds a 24.44% strike rate in the last 14 days and I see him having a couple of winners this afternoon at Redcar. 14:25 - Heresellie @ 3/1 365 (bog) 15:00 - Escape Artist @ 6/1 365 (bog) 16:45 - Ezra Church @ 2/1 365 (bog) 17:20 - Master Nimbus @ 11/4 Stan James (bog)
This was the only thing that jumped out of the entries when I was having a read yesterday. Gibbons is a decent jockey and has a 25% strike rate for both Barron & Easterby. All of the latter 3 have been backed with Escape Artist now at 4/1 (best). I never do multiples but have had a little Bank Holiday yankee on these with Bet365, who were the best, or joint for all selections.
  12. Re: JTW1's Specialisation - Trends Always follow your trends if I get the chance (had some at 15/8) Although MJ stated it was a prep, I thought he sounded bullish and was pleased to have got a prep run in at Meydan rather than coming straight here. He also seemed to rate the chance of AWZAAN and I read earlier in the week that R. Hills cannot see this out of the places. Had a little each way at 10/1. Good luck with AMOUR.

  13. Re: Sandown Friday 23rd April

No Hubris 2.55 Sandown My thoughts from last years flat season on this horse: I was with Kevshat during the Dante meeting and this horse looked fantastic in the parade ring. The major annoyance about York is the distance from parade ring to betting ring. It was 6-1 when we left the parade ring and 7-2/3-1 when we got to the betting ring. I really fancied this horse but didn't back it due to the price. It was really impressive on the day and absolutely dotted up, just pulling clear of the field. It will definitely come on for this run as it has been off track for 311 days and might be one to follow throughout the season, looks like it might go off favourite tomorrow and the price will influence if I back it now or leave it and back it in a better race at a better price somewhere down the line. The York race was a class 3 maiden but I immediately said Listed/Group winner in the future. Entered for the Derby but sire has a stamina index of 6.6 so the 1m trip today may be better suited.
The long term paddock-watching session pays off. Got first run on the favourite and held on well. Good call..!
  14. Re: JTW1's Specialisation - Trends My pleasure Luther bigokay.gif and a bit of good news i read on the RP site last night , although unfortunately too late for your trip , is that Baden-Baden will be able to race later in the year again after a takeover was successful. Yes, I saw that but I don't know why they cannot get the course ready for the Spring Meeting. We'll pick up a Racing Post at the airport and place a few bets on the UK racing via the phones over a few beers in the sunshine. There are worse places to be...

  15. Re: JTW1's Specialisation - Trends Thanks mate.. I would not even have had HARBINGER without reading your post though. Thanks again, Luther. PS.. You don't need to 'trend' the Baden-Baden races this year - they have gone bankrupt (after we had booked non-refundable flights and hotel) cry.gif Lucky that German beer is so good..!
