  1. Re: Cricket: The Ashes 2006/07

Gobshite Glenn McGrath has opened his mouth again and gone for another 5-0 prediction in favour of Australia! When will he ever learn to keep it shut. All Fletcher has to do is pin that up on the dressing room and get the guys to shove his words back down his throat. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/other_international/australia/4801737.stm
Yeah I'm sure McGrath's teammates are quietly cursing over that .. This is typical of what I mentioned in my earlier post in this thread .. There's a cockiness about Australia that concerns me. The attitude almost seems to be that it's Australia's "right" to regain the Ashes this time :lol because it'll be the swansong for quite a few of our senior players. Like I've said all along, Australia has plenty of work to do to shore up a couple of weaknesses .. namely the third fast bowling spot and the middle order. If the Aussies go into this series with anything less than a ruthless hunger they'll get rolled again ..
  2. Re: Australian Basketball (NBL) Update: October 6th match! As for tonight's Crocs v Taipans match .. Initially I fell over when I saw the total of 207.5 .. Anything under 220 should be fair game for a pounding when Townsville is at home, because their offense flows like Niagra Falls at the 'Swamp' .. The Taipans are also a team that loves to run and shoot, but coach Alan Black emphasised defense to the team at yesterday's final session before they headed south to Townsville. Crocs coach Trevor Gleeson had a similar message for his troops, which, coupled with the fact it's a local derby, makes me a little wary about the 'over'. Recent games between these two haven't been the 'track meet' 'shootouts' we'd come to expect from two teams that prefer to put points on the board rather than defend like demons. I think the 'local derby' factor has a lot to do with this. The rivalry between these two towns is nothing less than fierce, and in the past both teams have definitely taken the attitude that no matter how their respective seasons are going, a victory over their north queensland rival could atone for a lot of their sins. So I think I may just sit this one out and just scream for the Snakes tonight ..

  3. Re: Australian Basketball (NBL) Update: October 6th match!

:eek :eek There's a book that does 'totals' for NBL games??!! Did any of you happen to track the results from last season?...'cause I've often sat and laughed with my mates that if I could (I never knew I could!! :lol ), I'd just bet OVER on every game!! To me the NBL is funny to watch...esp. after the NBA starts and we're seeing those games a lot... ...NBL doesn't seem to have any structure, it's all run and gun and shoot and score when we can...the last 2 minutes of each quarter never seem to show any kind of clock management... There were a few close games I watched last year that it looked like no-one cared what the time was!!! They just ran back and forwards trying to out-shoot each other for the last minute!! Maybe I've just seen some strange games...and maybe I am generalising a fair bit... ...but like I said, hopefully someone has some real numbers about over/unders for last season??
LOL .. You're right to an extent Taz .. The NBL I think has more structure to it than the NBA, because in our league we don't have players with the raw athleticism who can just take the rock and make a big play on their own. So NBL teams tend to rely on more structured plays to get players in positions to make baskets. But then again some of the lesser teams in this competition probably do fit the description you made re the lack of thought in offense! With regard to totals, it's a case of picking your poison .. I've had three plays on totals so far this season .. two were 'unders' and one was an 'over' .. all three won and there was definitely a lot of method that went into each play .. Teams that are tired (due to back to back games of tough schedules ect) tend to play a bit slower so these games can be good ones for an 'under' play if the books aren't switched on and set a high total. Certain teams by virtue of their personel and playing style tend to be higher scoring or lower scoring teams as well, so there's definitely a few factors to consider with these plays.
  4. Re: Australian A-League Round 7 (Oct 6th - 8th)

Is that Basketball Mr F??? If you know your stuff feel free to let us know anytime a winner may loom :cheers
NBL BJ .. A thread has actually started up on this site .. There's a couple of other sites similar to this where lots of us get right into it re plays on games but I'll be sure to post mine here too .. For the record, it's proving very profitable again .. Am 5-0 for the season so far .. Lots of others doing very well off it too .. :ok
  5. Re: Australian A-League Round 7 (Oct 6th - 8th)

Good stuff Mr Flamboyant!! A brilliant last quarter effort saw the Hawks get home against a troubled Adelaide team. Smyth will get the chop now id say. Perth should finish this off for you now. What did the double pay mate?
Had to take plenty of juice Ads .. Only decided to hit the Hawks at the last minute, and by the time I'd made the play their price had dropped to $1.65 with the points .. Decided to throw in Perth as well so in the end got $2.30 .. Don't usually like this sort of play but they really both looked pretty safe so took the double ..
  6. Re: Australian Basketball (NBL) Wish I knew someone had started an NBL thread here .. Could have steered you guys away from playing Sydney straight up .. The Kings are missing Ian Crosswhite and Jason Smith tonight, tipping the scales well and truly in favour of the Breakers IMO .. I didn't have a play on this one (because despite the Kings being undermanned, they're still a team that's extremely well coached and that knows how to win), but if pushed I would lean towards New Zealand +4.5 given the Kings' absentees .. BTW .. my record for the season so far is 4-0 ..

  7. Re: Cricket: The Ashes 2006/07

:welcome Mr Flamboyant. Hope to see you around the cricket threads mate. I agree with you entirely. Your middle order cost you bigtime over here. Normally when you was in trouble Gilchrist would come in, bash it to all parts and rescue the situation but that didn't happen over here. Quotes I've seen today suggest Shane Watson is pushing for a starting place. I'm a big Hampshire fan and while I like what he did for us I don't see him strengthening a middle order.
It's amazing ever since the Ashes loss Australia has talked itself into believing it too needs a world class allrounder like Flintoff .. But it's no good wishing for something you don't have .. I don't think Watson is ready to provide a significant contribution with either bat or ball at the moment (at test level). Australia would be better served shoring up it's middle order with specialist batsmen and going with three in-form quicks and Warne .. or two spinners where the conditions suit .. Watson would be a big gamble to throw into an Ashes series as even as this one ..
  8. Re: Cricket: The Ashes 2006/07 I wouldn't despair if I were an England fan just yet .. I'd love nothing more than for Australia to get back to it's old winning ways against the old enemy, but I think all this talk about Australia gaining revenge is a far too premature. For all the troubles England is having at the moment with regard to injuries and form of certain players, Australia has a couple of grey areas too. Our middle order is still suspect to say the least. Batting positions 4 to 6 have been a big problem for Australia since the last Ashes series and the selectors seem no closer to solving the puzzle. Ok we know Mike Hussey will be there somewhere, but who will bat around him? Surely Damien Martyn won't be recalled (again) while Michael Clarke has hardly set the world on fire at any level since his dumping from the test side. With England's bowlers capable of getting the older ball to move, Australia's middle order is crucial. A fit Andrew Flintoff is also capable of posing huge problems to Australia with the ball in particular. He and Steve Harmison will relish the faster, bouncier bowling conditions out here. Australia's fast bowling stocks still have a couple of question marks attached to them as well. How will Glen McGrath, at 36 years of age, aim up in this series after missing a lot of cricket in the last 12 months? Will Brett Lee be a strike weapon once his initial burst with the new ball is over..? Who will be the Aussies' third seam bowler? Jason Gillespie was recalled for the series against Bangladesh and did brilliantly against the test minnows with ball and bat, but he's surely carrying some major mental scars from the 2005 series in England. I just hope it's somewhere near as brilliant a contest as last year's series was. If both teams bring their best it surely will be.

  9. Re: Australian A-League: Round 4 Yeah very nice writeup Ads .. I can't see any reason at all not to pile on Queensland tonight .. The Roar is finding the net with regularity so far this season (aside from last weekend's scoreless draw in the wet) and should have no trouble getting at least one more tonight. I'm still kicking myself hard for not taking a piece of the $2 offered for Adelaide last friday night .. It was just one of those situations where you knew they were going to come out with a big performance, having lost their opening two games on the road. Won't make that mistake this weekend, $1.85 is good value for them to take care of the mediocre Glory.
